There are so many "safety nets" these days, people don't necessarily feel that they need to take responsibility for their own life, relationships or possessions. (I'm not knocking anyone in this thread, just making a general observation.) This is a major problem in society; when people wonder why the world is going to hell in a handbasket, the "someone else will take care of it" attitude is a big part of it.

A major problem!

I'm not saying you have to use a case, but I personally think the "my phone is too sexy to cover up" is a terrible argument, not to mention indicative of a potentially faulty paradigm about the important things in life.

It's absolutely a terrible argument. Apparently the iPhone is a status symbol and your iPhone model is directly indicative of your accomplishments in life. That's the impression I get from many people on these forums.

I'm on the opposite end though. I could truly give 2 #&@^s what model phone someone else uses... and if you see me pull up to the Wendy's drive thru in my $40,000 Dodge Challenger and use my iPhone 8 Plus and ApplePay... that's right... it's not an X.

I didn't want an X. I wanted an 8 Plus.

Just a thought for those who like to go naked - aren't there any front/rear tempered glass kits for the 8 and/or X ?

It broke, so what? You’ve got apple care + so it will be as good as new. Using a case spoils the feel of the phone. If it breaks so be it, just make sure you’ve got insurance :)

You must live fairly close to an Apple Store. It is about an hour from me and with working that is even harder to get their during the week.

:mad::mad::mad::mad:Grrrrr!!!! Dang thread jinxed me!! Just dropped me phone (about 2 foot drop).

Forgot I was tethered to the dang charging cable!! Phone flew up, and couldn’t catch it!! I need that dang AirPower pad!!! Wireless ftw!!
I do that a lot to my iPad and iPhone. S8+ is on a wireless charging puck. Fortunately I have carpet in the bedroom where the chargers are. I do charge my phones elsewhere sometimes, but when I’m more awake, I’m less likely to have that particular mishap. :D

The iPhone X camera bump is way too vulnerable. I can’t imagine letting this phone go caseless. Just setting it down on a desk or table seems like courting a scratch to the camera lens.

I thought "smash" meant something else. ;)

I saw the X being tortured for educational purposes thanks to Zack from JerryRigEverything.

Love live the original Nokia 3310!

You know the original Nokia 3310 is really made of strong plastic, right? Not vibranium or what Mjolnir or The Ring is made from. And some people think glass is superior to plastic.

Recommend using a magnetic charging cable (eg.Wsken?/ASAP? - eBay) to save future grief. Several makers.

I don’t really understand why X owners don’t buy Apple care? Your buying a $1000 phone and Apple care cost $200 or $8.33 per month over 2 years. Given the cost of a new screen or replacement it’s just fiscally responsible. You really a little choice at this point to trust a 3rd party to have the latest technology and knowledge to repair the X correctly. Maybe they can with a 7 or 8. But would you trust a3rd party repair shop on your X?

No. I don’t see why Apple builds a device that is so fragile and costs so much. If they charge this much, the doggone phone should bounce like a tennis ball and never get one tiny scratch. This is the reason why I won’t buy one.

The expensive phone should be protected with a case. If you want to preserve its beauty so you and others can admire it, you should get a clear strong case, the highest quality one like otterbox.

The expensive, meticulously designed phone should not be put in a piece of garbage plastic enclosure. Buy AppleCare and take care of your phone. If an accident happens, AppleCare.

What will you buy instead? Every smartphone breaks if you drop it.

Maybe go back to a Motorola flip phone? They were pretty sturdy.

What do you do if you drop it badly, TWICE!

Never damaged any of my iPhones in the last 9 years and never bought the insurance. Sure, it could happen to me tomorrow but I will still be way ahead.

I am sorry for the OP’s loss! It could happen anytime, but I refuse to use my X with no case. Nothing against those who will not use a case, it is every person’s choice.

Life is full of choices.

How do others admire it when it is encapsulated in plastic?

I have an Apple Black leather case and a clear case like that one. I’m finding with the X I much prefer the clear case. When it’s in the black leather case it could be any black phone. When it’s in the clear case you see the true color of that phone. Looks a lot better to me.

I won’t buy anything. I have an iPhone 6+ which works fine and is paid for. Why would I want to spend $1400 on a phone like the X that cracks if you sneeze on it? Yes, the X is a wonderful example of incredible technology. But Apple has to do better with the durability of their products.

Just remember to remove it every once in a while and clean any debris to prevent it from scuffing the device.

Phone should never be in shirt pocket

Over the years I had too many iPhones leap out of my shirt pocket like lemmings off the cliff. Usually, like the lemmings, onto some rock-like surface. Finally learned that lesson and don't do that any more...

Sucks to hear Fisher, that's why I got AC+ as well. What I did was I got a clear case that is easy to put on/take off. When i'm home or at work, the phone is naked. When i'm going out anywhere, case goes back on. Try that out

It turns out I did the right thing using my AC+ incident first (at least, according to the T's & C's of my credit card insurance) - you're to use any other insurance policies that you have first, then they will cover anything additional, as a supplemental policy.

As such, I'm getting the $145.77 (taxes in) back from the deductible AC+ charges to replace the X.

It's part of their "First 90 days accidental/theft/loss" portion of the policy.

I do have Apple's silicone case on it at the moment....hate it being on there, but maybe I'll get used to it. May pick up the leather one instead (like I had on my 5s years ago) - the silicone one doesn't go into pockets very well.

Shouldn't be as much of an issue with the X. The back is glass, right? So the risk is really just the side bands, I think.
Huh? What shouldn't be as much of an issue with the X? :)

The glass shatters quite well, I can assure you. :) The bands did get nicked up in 3 spots from falling on its face.

Read the post I quoted. Dust and grit inside the case scratching the iPhone should be less of an issue.

But I do get it that it's a new high in fragile.

Heh...did you add that quote after the fact? :)

Yep, agree. If you're going to keep your phone in a case, you need to pull it out every so often to make sure there's no buildup that can scratch it.

Just took mine out to clean it....damn...think I'll go case-less again until the slow flies. :)

Might have to plead guilty if you were speedy enough. I tried to quote that, but the forum software malfed, so I added it with an edit. You are too quick. Must be that BionicX chip? ;)

It is a really nice looking phone, and in a way a case is a shame. OTOH, this phone is at least as fragile as the 4/4S, probably more. And fixing broken backs was cheap on those (the display was obviously more than the back).

Cases. I guess it depends on your carry method. I keep (kept?) my super-glossy Jet Black iPhone 7 in an Apple leather case and never took it out to clean the case out. It lives/lived in my front pants pocket, so lots of lint. But a year later there are really no scratches, not even micro-scratches, on it. I've had it happen seriously badly to a couple of iPads, though, so i know that Newtons Apple is correct about the issue.
