I have the exact same opinion. However, mine is unlocked on ****-Mobile so the 3g is really no use to me. Ill keep my 16gb iPhone until a 64gb iPhone comes out in hopefully 2-3 years.

none of my friends with 2g iPhones are upgrading... they're happy enough and really don't care enough about 3g to get one. The 2.0 software will be a huge improvement for the 2g iPhone anyway.

I'm getting a 3g Friday, but it'll be my first iPhone.

I just don't need it. I'm not going to fork over money for a new phone each year. I'll probably upgrade my iPhone when the NEXT generation is released. I purchased my iPhone a few months ago and I'm getting the same thing with the 2.0 software, minus a speed boost and GPS, which I wouldn't have use for anyway.

Maybe when they increase the GB's, but for now my 16GB 1st Gen will do just fine. Anyone think we'll see a 32 GB for the Holidays ?

Despite what you are reading here, the vast majority of v1 users will not upgrade on Friday.

Yes, there will definitely be a refresh of some sort around Dec/January. Apple sunk a lot of money into the 3G/GPS redesign this time around, and that is enough of a change to get people to buy it, so why add more memory when it will be difficult to recoup the costs of increased RAM. They'll save the 32GB upgrade for a midmodel push.

I'm not going to upgrade because I can't. Damn! They are not even selling them in my 'state'. Not only do I have to pay on average 8 grand more for new vehicles because of an excise tax I can't even buy the new iPhone. This really gets my goat!

Probably not going to upgrade yet either. When the 3G was launched, my thoughts were "Nice phone, but not enough of an upgrade to shell out a couple of hundred pounds on" - what I really wanted was a 32GB one. Then when O2 announced the (very) cheap prices I thought I might as well. I was also attracted by the apparent ease of being able to upgrade online without having to queue. Yesterday's debacle gave me pause for thought and I have reverted to my original thinking that it's not enough of an improvement to upgrade for. I'll probably wait until either a 32GB version is released (which will happen eventually I believe) or alternatively I'll re-assess at the end of my Contract (May next year)

Yeah as much as I'm into the hype of it all I won't be upgrading unless the hardware features that involve louder ear phone, speaker phone come to pass. The 2.0 software update gives me everything but GPS and faster data when not within wifi and that's rarely the case. My current iphone is almost perfect.

I will not upgrade either.

I got my phone on launch day last year and it still is in perfect condition. I mainly use it at home, like right now, with my wi-fi connection. I would rarely use the GPS anyway. The faster speeds would be nice for when I am out and about but that is not enough to make me change. Honestly the new headphone jack has me more excited than anything but that isn't enough either. So do I upgrade for minor improvements? Aside from the phone's cost the extra $15 / month for the service are much bigger negatives than the minor positives.

I'll wait until I can get a G3 with 32 gigs and if that is another year than so be it.

I love my phone.

I was just saying in another post - I am also skipping.

1. A friend of mine currently on the 3G network rarely gets a good 3G area...if the signal isnt near perfect it doesnt run on 3G.

2. GPS is cool...but I'd only use it once or twice because its cool..not because I need it. That would quickly get old.

3. Our phone now looks cooler than the new one! Come on, thinner, metal back. It's nice! Black plastic isnt that sweet. Plus its curved/kinda bulky.

I almost feel like I'd be downgrading in looks. If the only way to get 2.0 was to upgrade I'd be all over it - but we get that....so I'm content and happy :).

next year will probably be a whole new ballpark. More external features, sleaker design....I'll hop on it then.

Don't get me wrong...

... I will be getting an iPhone 3G - just not yet. :D
I'm more than happy to let all the n00bs get the first few batches, and suffer any hard/software issues with them. The AppStore is what I really want, and I will be more than happy for a good few months with that, and the 2.0 software.

I am not the least bit interested in upgrading. Zero. I want a second line, which I guess will have to be 3G at this point, but the original is fine with me. I even have the 4G.

I thought about it, but the price increase ($15 more for same features/mo) really turned me off. Actually it was the deal breaker for me.

After a year, I've settled into my surfing and mail patterns and really don't see the need for 3G at all. GPS is nice, but I really have no use for it.

Like others have stated, I'd like to see what happens next year when the PA Semi designs start to get incorporated.

A little OT... My nephew got a Samsung Instinct, the supposed "iPhone killer". It wasn't bad, Haptic feedback was OK, nothing special. I don't think it's an iPhone killer though. The 2.0 software will take care of that.

I spoke to two friends recently who also are choosing to stick with the original. They see no point in spending $199 now plus another $15 / month for something that is marginally better than what they have now.

So that's three of us who are waiting for 32 gigs, then we'll switch.

I'm increasingly feeling I'm going to stick as well.

I hate the looks of the new phone, and O2 have really, really messed me around. I don't care about GPS, and 3G is only a marginal improvement (taking calls at the same time as being online being the main part of that).

I was really only taking it because it was essentially free. But I've been messed around so much that my time is costing me a signficant amount now. I might look at upgrading for the next version.

That does mean I'll need some new headphones though. I wish we knew if a radio remote with a microphone was coming…

I am not switching. I have ZERO 3G coverage anywhere near me and have no desire to pay more $$ each month for a service I can't use. If AT&T gets their act together and gets better coverage, then I may consider it.

I'm thinking of upgrading simply because it looks like I end up with cash in my pocket.

New iPhone £159
Sell old on on eBay for >£200 with O2 PAYG SIM ("[...]customers can join O2 by getting a free Pay & Go iPhone SIM card from an O2 store") +/- unlocking.

What's there to lose?

Edit: just checked, 16GB iPhones are selling for about £300 on eBay!

I'm probably not going to change until a 32MB version comes out. I'll be satisfied exploring what the free firmware 2.0 upgrade and the app store do for me until then.

I hate to break this to you but when iPhone 3G is out and the market is flooded with old ones, you aren't going to get that kind of money for yours.

One more thing too...

Well I have to admit... I have a $200 apple gift card, and was all set to run out early tomorrow morning, get in lone (which I now doubt there will be) and pick up a black 16 gig, and then after reading the reviews from the "3 Amigos" I had a thought...

Here in the US at least, this would be my first subsidized iPhone. Meaning that not only would it renew my contract, which is not a problem because I had ATT anyway) but it will render me ineligible for a new iPhone for at least the next 18 months, unless I pay the full price again.

This is the one thing that I haven't seen being discussed much; what happens when a real upgrade (better camera, better battery life, more storage, faster processor...) comes in 6-8 months? I know I'll want it, you know, have to have it. It seems that for me, it makes far more sense to hold on to my iPhone, and content myself with the 2.0 software, until then.

I hope I am wrong, but I just see a lot of pissed off people on here, whining about how they want the new one, but the "unfair" ATT is making them pay $399-$499 for it because they just got a 3g for $199 a year or less ago!

Anyway, not really a financial decision, as I have the cash, just more of an "I am trying to not buy in entirely by feeling the need to upgrade to every single generation of something in order to feel that my life has meaning" decision.

Anyone else feel similarly?

i suppose the extra 8 months added to your contract. At 35 quid a month thats a reason

Not going...

Damn... I was just thinking the same thing. I was 'yes' 'no' yes' 'no' and am staying at NO. I will wait and see what Apple does down the line and then get me a better phone for the upgrade price instead of being locked into a subsidized phone.

Besides, mostly what I want is in the v2.0 software and I am in a marginal 3G area. And... Apple just replaced my original phone because of a hardware glitch and it looks brand new.

Yeah, I'm waiting.

i think the O2 lies about 13000 orders per second on there system are showing that they are desperate to do a Sony and create the hype to increase sales.

However i think now the credit crunch is biting here in the UK and people are genuinely tightneding the belts so i think most people will take the sensible idea and not upgrade.

4 people in my office and all have said no to upgrade, funnily enough all have given the reason of preferring the metal finish on the original iphone to the new plastic finish.
