as i mentioned above, i only realize the iPad 3 hiccups because i am used to the fluidity of the iPad 2 that i used to own. i always experience hiccups when playing Metal Storm where it's either an actual motion hiccup or the motion crawls then picks up again (after firing a missile, the smoke trail skips outwards instead of flowing outwards like on the iPad 2). all of the iPad 3's that i have owned have done this (i exchanged two iPad 3's before i got one without backlight bleed and pink tint). the iPad 3 also hiccups when scrolling on a graphics intensive web page, something the iPad 2 never did. i know the retina screen requires a lot of graphics processing, but the A5X barely keeps up and is not sufficient if the fluidity of the iPad 2 is benchmarked as the golden standard.

i'm not the only one who feels this way, also real world tests have proven that the iPad 2 actually loads web pages more quickly and performs tasks in a more snappy fashion. the A5X revision (from the A5) was solely just to handle the retina screen which in my opinion it handles very well...just doesn't leave much wiggle room for anything else

I came from a original iPad to the 3, I've honestly never used a 2 for much more than a few minutes at a time. Maybe this is why I don't see it as vividly as you do.

I brought my iPad just over a month ago so I am a little annoyed that this happened! But a friend of mine still on his 1st gen iPad and only just recently started to run into problems with say playing some of the latest games so its lasted a fair while.

The main reason I never picked up say the iPad2 was waiting for the big jump which was the Retina so until there is another big jump in some form I think I don't really have anything to be annoyed at... Sure 2X more power but when it comes down to it I watch videos/read comics/browse the internet on my iPad I don't really need the extra power and all the games I have played run so damn smooth but I don't spend enough time there.

Overall I'm a little pissed that this happened so close to when I personally purchased a iPad but what can you do :p I'm sure its going to last me a fair few years before I need a new one and by then should be on the 6-7th gen and be worthy of a upgrade.

I amhappy with my 3. might upgrade my wifes ipad 2 and hand down the 3 and get myself a 4. other than that I am happy

I felt much better when I realized it was an iPad 3S.

I would have been upset if it got thinner and lighter and had added battery life, because those are the main things I want for my future iPad purchase.

yeah that's why. if you owned an iPad 2 you would certainly notice a lack of fluidity with the iPad 3.

the iPad 1 was fluid for it's time, but with the iOS updates it made it slower and slower. then the iPad 2 came out with the A5 and it was like night and day, and truly was magical to tell ya the truth. all of that power, in such a slim profile, with such fluid motion. it was amazing what apple achieved.

i moved to the iPad 3 retina and expected the same performance but with a retina screen. i got the retina screen and love it, but the performance is inferior to the iPad 2. it's still decent and the retina still is amazing, it just makes Metal Storm less enjoyable.

battery life is another topic of discussion...the iPad 2 excelled in that too over the iPad 3, despite Apple's claims

I am actually looking to buy an Ipad 3 now that the 4 is out. I don't use my Ipad enough to justify paying full retail. Not having the new connector is also another plus. I keep a couple cables around the house and in the office. Buying them will add more to the price difference.

I have a third generation and I love it. I'm not angry at Apple - I think it was a shrewd commercial move.

This will only bother you if you are attached to,having the latest product. I regularly buy a brand new car but still find that after six months to a year the manufacturer refines or changes something. It doesn't bother me - I bought the product at the time because I liked what it did. A new model doesn't change that.

Oddly enough, I start a new job in January and will have to travel by train. I was going to swap my iPad for a cellular model anyway so this actually suits me in a way.

I wish you weren't the only one... Having an iPhone 5 and now finding out that my 6month old New iPad is obselete and out of production is kind of a mind bender for me.

Ughh..... now i have to sell it on ebay, recoup most of my losses, and then descide whether i want an iPad Mini or 4th gen ipad.. The mini might be the best option considering the weight etc.

I bought a new house, but then a year later a newer estate was built down the road.

Now I have to sell my house, find the money for a deposit on a new house and then buy it and move into it.

It's so unfair!

Folks - trying to beat the Joneses is a pointless exercise that will leave you very dissatisfied with your life. Enjoy what you have and move onto the next thing when the time is right.

I agree.

I read the rumors and just managed to get my refund under the wire. Yes I would have cared owning a slower, hotter, older iPad3 only 17 days old if I had kept it.

Yes, most loyal Apple customers who buy upgrades more often than DELL or HP will care.

I understand why some will feel ok and insist this is the price of buying technology but boasting of how many iPads sold, a good portion of iPad3s, felt like nearly being thrown under their Big Fat Bonus Bus.

Not classy, felt like DELL.

I was lucky but most were not.

What I do not understand is why people, all of a sudden, think their iPad is no longer suitable. These must be the same OCD iPhone 5 owners who spend days looking for the most tiny scratch or other defect on their device.

What will really piss everyone off is when the iPhone 6 is announced in early Spring!;)

I'd be pissed if I was l big into gaming on the iPad, that's where it's useful life has been seriously shortened. Going forward, you'll have games that are nice and zippy on the 1024x screens, zippy and high res on the 4th gen.....and the 3rd gen will be the redheaded step child, awesome res but a gpu/cpu combo that either isn't upto the task, or devs won't optimise for.

Otherwise, it's still a fast, awesome tablet with an amazing screen that'll be great for a couple of years.

I guess, if you don't mind having an archaic, antiquated, out-of-date, obsolete device then the iPad 3 is fine.

I don't give a crap about the iPad 4. It would give me literally zero if I went and traded my 3 for it. Just a dumb spec bump with very questionable real world differences.

God... I feel like I'm talking about PCs here... what's happening to you Apple?

Sure, iPad 4 real world difference would be minimal, and I doubt many people would upgrade from iPad 3 at launch.

So the much better faster CPU doesn't matter to you, and is a dumb spec jump ?

So the better facetime camera is just a dumb spec jump to you ?

So the better WiFi hardware is just a dumb spec jump to you ?

Oh, ya. Your other thread you made below sure made a hit with the members didn't it. Perhaps you should think before you post again, since your posts really don't make any sense, and are jumped on by many.

I love my 3rd gen. I have no reason to upgrade.

This.

I'm totally happy with my 3rd gen, and the capacity and connection speed are more than enough for my usage pattern.

Of course it matters! Anyone who owns a 3 and says it doesn't matter is just trying to save face and protect their fragile egos. Anyone who owns a 2 or 1 is already an outcast from the Apple community so their feelings are irrelevant, other than those who get with the program and upgrade to the 4th Gen. To those, I say welcome back but you must wear your shame badge for having the momentary lapse of judgement in skipping a generation.

This is seriously important soul-defining stuff here. Its a new Apple product! Making a choice to do anything BUT fork over your credit cards and upgrade immediately is grounds for derision. Don't you realize this?

:D:D

He's not wrong saying it would make zero real-world difference to him.
- the faster CPU may not be substantially noticeable in less-demanding apps, which may be all he has;
- better facetime camera would make zero different to him, because it will only show up better at the other end;
- finally, with wifi, it also depends on the quality of the hotspots. If the source is slow, no way would any iPad hardware make it faster.

So he does have a point. While the spec difference is significant, are you certain you will be able to distinguish an iPad 3 from iPad 4 using the difference in speed if all the ports are covered up?

the A6X is badly needed.

the A5X can barely handle the retina screen and other tasks without hiccuping rather frequently

Do you actually own one? When I had mine (left it on an airplane :(), it did everything I wanted it to without hiccups. I'm not a gamer, so maybe you've experienced problems there?

If I hadn't lost my iPad 3 I would still be happy with it and wait until the iPad 5. I'm happy with every other generation on the iPad. I'm simply now on the even generations instead of the odd ones.

I'm slightly annoyed by it.
But- I just read on the thing.

I would be far more angry if they made it thinner and lighter- that will be the upgrade worth getting.
If you have the 3- the 4 can be skipped- just wait until March when the thin/light version 5 is released.
Then we can all read the complaints of the folks that bought v4.

Hi,

What an amazing post to read how someone can be so 'cool' about something so many people are angry about. :)

Personally, I don't like it at all - as an iPad 3 owner - that Apple released an iPad 4. It's not that I'm angry that my iPad 3 is no longer the newest of the newest, but I'm disappointed about how 'heavily' it has been upgraded.

I couldn't care less if they updated the iPad 3 to add world-wide LTE support and the Lightning connector (after all: that's the connector for the coming decade to use).

What I don't like, is that they actually added two new - big - features. First of all, FaceTime HD. The front facing camera has been heavily improved and I feel it's something they could have added in March. It's a brand new feature and it's great to use in combination with a Retina Display.

The second thing I'm disappointed about it the A6X chip. The CPU exists out of Apple's Swift architecture (like found in the iPhone 5) and it's amazingly fast. The iPhone 5's clocked at 1.3 GHz, so the iPad 4 is clocked at, at least, 1.3 GHz but most likely 1.5 GHz. The GPU is also 'twice as fast' which would be astonishing.

This is not merely a 'small upgrade'. The A6X chip gives much better iOS software update support. It's well known: the more powerful a chip is in an iOS device, the better later software versions (iOS 6.1, iOS 7, iOS 8, etc.) will run.

Also, I'm worried that Apple will not release iOS 7 for the iPad 3. Apple usually only pushes out software updates for devices that are on sale. I think they'll release iOS 7 for the iPad 3, but iOS 8 most definitely not. ;)

So that's the thing I'm a bit disappointed about: the A6X is extremely powerful compared to the A5X chip. Not only will it give much better performance, it also means future iOS software updates will run much, much smoother.

And again, I wouldn't have had a problem with it if Apple announced an iPad 4 with only two changes: the Lightning connector and world-wide LTE support. The A6X chip, however, is huge.

Thanks for reading. ;)

Now this is a very well thought out, reasonable explanation of why someone might be upset over the iPad revision. Far more eloquent than most of the posts expressing outrage since yesterday.

Its tech folks, it changes rapidly. Me I'm content with what I have, they can do whatever they want.

Under Jobs, the products had a life cycle. We came to expect annual refreshes of iPads and iPhones. There was no reason to think Apple would jump the rails and start short-releasing upgrades. When Apple held up the 'new iPad' and said, "Look! Shiny, faster, newer. This is what you get" There wasn't reason to challenge that this was the year's offering and the next iteration would come along next spring.

The fact remains the I, and many others, were underwhelmed that they did display upgrades with a minor processor revision. The processor itself wasn't anything more significant than in the 2, it was the GPU that had changed. Many also questioned why a better camera wasn't utilized. There were a lot of complaints about that here and the pundits said it was to control costs. Without the massive annual pre-order groups and rolling releases, I think Apples surge sales will thin out. If they produce more hardware per year with fewer people buying the devices, that means revenue projections are going to change.

Fast-forward several months and, amazingly enough, costs be damned, here is a version that everyone said the iPad 3 should have been back in the spring.

I went from the 1 to the 3 with reservations that, beyond the display, it was rather disappointing as compared to the 2. Yes, I'm not happy about this because it now seems that Apple is starting down the Android path and stacking release after release of incremental upgrades.

Obviously, if I went from the 1 to the 3, I'm not one of those people who has to have every version of the Apple iSomething that comes out. This is going to affect those people. If there's no "event" rolling out the latest and greatest and just a rolling repeated release schedule of incremental upgrades, the "must haves" aren't going to be so rabid anymore. Apple will lose its fans' pressing urgency to upgrade and end up like Samsung, just crank out another version to keep the stock fresh in the cell phone stores.
