I jumped from ipad2 to ipad 3 on the 3s launch, because of the retina screen. If I'm staring at something, I want it to look the best it can look.

However, I will not jump from the 3 to the 4. My only slight beef with the 3 is the weight (it is heavier than the 2, and it is noticeable as my wife still has the 2). Also, I use the 3 for reading a lot (via Kindle app).

So if the 4 was lighter, I would be a little annoyed. Since it is the exact same weight, I'll probably hold off on upgrading until Ipad 5 or 6.

The faster processor doesn't matter to me, as any sluggishnish (if there is any) is probably due more to memory issues than processor speed at this point. And I haven't read that the 4 has more RAM than the 3.

I only use facetime with family (and I know what they look like), so I don't care about camera quality for that. Wifi hardware upgrade doesn't appear to be a big deal that people will really notice. So no huge reason to upgrade from a 3.

Do you actually own one? When I had mine (left it on an airplane :(), it did everything I wanted it to without hiccups. I'm not a gamer, so maybe you've experienced problems there?

If I hadn't lost my iPad 3 I would still be happy with it and wait until the iPad 5. I'm happy with every other generation on the iPad. I'm simply now on the even generations instead of the odd ones.

uhhh yeah...of course i own one. otherwise i wouldn't make that statement. in fact, i've owned 3 (first 2 were exchanges due to back light bleeding). all 3 hiccup during Metal Storm and while scrolling on a graphics intensive website with motion on the site...both of which never happened on the iPad 2. i owned an iPad 2 before that (gave it to a family member) so i know how fluid it used to be. if i was a 1st time tablet owner, the iPad 3 fluidity issues might seem "normal" to me

in addition to hiccups, the iPad 3's fluidity is inferior during gameplay as well. for example, in Metal Storm when you fire a rocket there is a smoke trail. on the iPad 2 it puffs outwards fluidly. on the iPad 3, it skips outwards in steps.

the A5X was enough to handle the retina during low-processing tasks but is insufficient for graphics intensive motion

actually it has everything to do with the processor. the A5X was not sufficient to power the retina screen and maintain the fluidity of the iPad 2

play Metal Storm on an iPad 2 and then on your iPad 3 and see what i mean

I've never played metal storm but I gotta say that galaxy on fire 2 gets pretty sluggish on the ipad 3. probably descreasing the fps to <10. thankfully, the developers added the option to change the in-game resolution, however, it's still choppy sometimes but it makes it playable. I'll probably wait for the ipad 5 or retina ipad mini (if the chipset is good) unless apple provides an awesome trade-in deal.

The bottom line here seems to be that if you're a gamer, or use other graphics-intensive software, then 4th gen is going to look very attractive to you, and if you've recently bought a 3rd gen, you're going to feel miffed at having something you will want to pay for again so soon.

(Though what is the alternative? Not have had the 3rd gen when you did? Or not have this 4th gen till spring? This is what I don't follow.)

If you bought 3rd gen for the screen resolution and don't use games, you're going to be fine waiting out a generation.

Didn't you get the memo? Your iPad 3 was working perfectly last night and as of this morning, for reasons not clear to me, it is now a broken pile of steamy crap.

At least that's the gist of the nonsensical complaints I'm seeing.

yeah i agree, through Ios6 they have now underclocked the Ipad 3 CPU so the 4th will look faster _:)

Am I the only iPad 3rd Gen owner one who doesn't care about the iPad 4th Gen?

I upgrade my devices when they change their design (iPhone every 2 years, and Mac every 3.5 - 4 years), because TBH, upgrading for an insignificant speed bump is dumb (for a user like me who just listens to music, watches movies, browses the web, and works on documents).

The iPad 3 is my first iPad and I love it. I bought it because of the retina display, and as soon as I did, I knew I would not buy a new iPad until a significant change in its design was made.

With the iPad 3 I can read books and comics with sharp images and text, I can listen to music, browse the web, etc. And everything is absolutely smooth - So I'm very surprised to see people saying that the iPad 3 is sluggish at times; maybe the performance of games such as Galaxy on Fire 2 which require a lot of power do run at a lower frame rate than the iPad 2 as the machine is rendering double the pixels (I've got no idea, I don't really use it for gaming)... but the simple fun games I download and play run flawlessly.

Back to my main point - This new iPad has the same design as my current 3rd Gen. However, the design of the iPad mini is completely different to that of the iPad, and it resembles the iPhone 5 - So the 4th Gen iPad seems more like an iPad 3S (as I mentioned on another thread) and I think we should expect a refresh in the iPad's design sometime soon. For this reason it isn't worth the upgrade IMO.

If you keep chasing technology you will never catch-up and will always be disappointed (so I see why many of you are raging). If you don't care about these minor speed bumps (as frankly, they are silly for the regular user) and chase design then you'll be fine and happy.

Cheers :)

Nope. I don't care. I upgraded to the 3 from the 1 because they fixed the screen. More memory helped browser performance as well. Now, I'll wait for the next compelling upgrade. It's simply silly to always need the newest model for no other reason.

Bottom line, the lightning connector will allow the device to charge MUCH FASTER!!

This, in and of itself, is worth the price of the upgrade. My iPad 3 takes about 8 hours to fully charge...it's a joke!

This is a welcome and much needed upgrade.

Can't wait to upgrade my original iPad. :)

And yeah, my iPad 1 takes about 7 hours to charge. Annoying. :(

I have the iPad 2 and I don't care about the 4. It still runs great, is smooth... does everything I need it to do.

I'm at the age where I need reading glasses, but I can still use the iPad 2 without retina just fine.

I know the retina is better but it's not worth it for me to spend the $$ at this point.

When apps/games start coming out that can't run on the 2, then I'll consider changing to a newer iPad....

Ok, that was my guess. And, since I'm not a gamer, not a biggie for me.

"otherwise i wouldn't make that statement". Unfortunately, some people on this forum, would ;)

I love my 64GB AT&T iPad 3 but am considering the switch to iPad 4 simply to get the companion data plan for Sprint smartphone owners. The other upgrades such as the faster processor, Wi-Fi, lightning connector and better camera are simply icing on the cake.

Am I the only one tired of seeing posts titled "Am I the only one..."?

It's APPLE. They sell MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of products to millions upon millions of people. Even if you ask "Am I the only one who snorts coke off my iPad screen?", the answer is NO.

Your unique special insightful nuanced notion about the iProduct 9S is not special, insightful, nuanced, and certainly not unique. It was discussed months and months ago by Apple's internal committees, who have already figured out your unique special insightful nuanced notions about the next 10 iProducts.

Obviously its not a real question. Im sure OP was aware that he wasnt the only one. You just wanted to went some steam here.

i feel exactly the same. After I got over the initial shock of the 4th gen I realised a couple of things.

1. iPad 3 is as awesome as ever.
2. 250,000 of the existing iPad apps will still run in their full glory on the iPad3. The next 1million will probably run just as well.
3. I remember saying when the iPad 3 came out the Retina screen was the jewel in the crown and made reading text, viewing photos and watching movies amazing. I also said Apple will struggle to top it. As iPad 2 & 3 speed was never a problem, a speed bump doesnt solve anything.
4. iPad 4 as it stands will probably retain perfromance parity with iPad 3 for the next 2yrs at least probably breaking away after that with iOS 8 or so.
5. As Im not a heavy gamer, I dont see any advantage of the iPad 4 over the 3.
6. In hindsight, even if Apple told us back in March that the 4th Gen would be out in 7 months, I wouldnt have waited. I would have bought the 3 at launch and kept it.
7. The plan was always to skip the iPad 4 and consider the iPad 5 if it was rumored to be a substantial improvement. So now, rather than wait 24 months to upgrade I may only have to wait 18 months. I dont see this as particularly negative.
8. I will upgrade my iPad 3 when Apple produces a gamechanger feature. The A6x isnt even close being that.

Cheers

Of course it matters! Anyone who owns a 3 and says it doesn't matter is just trying to save face and protect their fragile egos. Anyone who owns a 2 or 1 is already an outcast from the Apple community so their feelings are irrelevant, other than those who get with the program and upgrade to the 4th Gen. To those, I say welcome back but you must wear your shame badge for having the momentary lapse of judgement in skipping a generation.

This is seriously important soul-defining stuff here. Its a new Apple product! Making a choice to do anything BUT fork over your credit cards and upgrade immediately is grounds for derision. Don't you realize this?

What a silly, silly thread.

I hope I'm reading the sarcasm right in this post. If so, well done sir. I too felt my manhood shrink when the new iPad was announced and the only justifiable way to get it back is to upgrade.

Hi,

What an amazing post to read how someone can be so 'cool' about something so many people are angry about. :)

Personally, I don't like it at all - as an iPad 3 owner - that Apple released an iPad 4. It's not that I'm angry that my iPad 3 is no longer the newest of the newest, but I'm disappointed about how 'heavily' it has been upgraded.

I couldn't care less if they updated the iPad 3 to add world-wide LTE support and the Lightning connector (after all: that's the connector for the coming decade to use).

What I don't like, is that they actually added two new - big - features. First of all, FaceTime HD. The front facing camera has been heavily improved and I feel it's something they could have added in March. It's a brand new feature and it's great to use in combination with a Retina Display.

The second thing I'm disappointed about it the A6X chip. The CPU exists out of Apple's Swift architecture (like found in the iPhone 5) and it's amazingly fast. The iPhone 5's clocked at 1.3 GHz, so the iPad 4 is clocked at, at least, 1.3 GHz but most likely 1.5 GHz. The GPU is also 'twice as fast' which would be astonishing.

This is not merely a 'small upgrade'. The A6X chip gives much better iOS software update support. It's well known: the more powerful a chip is in an iOS device, the better later software versions (iOS 6.1, iOS 7, iOS 8, etc.) will run.

Also, I'm worried that Apple will not release iOS 7 for the iPad 3. Apple usually only pushes out software updates for devices that are on sale. I think they'll release iOS 7 for the iPad 3, but iOS 8 most definitely not. ;)

So that's the thing I'm a bit disappointed about: the A6X is extremely powerful compared to the A5X chip. Not only will it give much better performance, it also means future iOS software updates will run much, much smoother.

And again, I wouldn't have had a problem with it if Apple announced an iPad 4 with only two changes: the Lightning connector and world-wide LTE support. The A6X chip, however, is huge.

Thanks for reading. ;)

BLAH BLAH BLAH. Your whole wall of post translates into one thing:
There is something better out there than my device and it makes me upset! wahhhhh!

Dude. Chill out. Your iPad 3 is still awesome and a fantastic device. FANTASTIC. Does it really bother you that another device out there has enhancements to trivial things that don't impact your life in the slightest? And for you to be assuming things about iOS iterations releasing in the far future is a glimpse into your mind. And i'll tell you what sir, you need to step away from Mac boards for a while. Seriously. I MEAN SHEESH! ONE version later and you are already speculating that it can't handle iOS's. LOOK AT YOURSELF MAN! SNAP OUT OF IT! WOW.

Like i've said before and I'll say again and again. Do you feel like you need to have the latest and greatest gadget? Because if you do, you might want to look at yourself before you go ranting off about Apple.

You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. Once you upgrade, of course.

Personally I didn't expect the upgrade to be so good...
2x CPU Speed
2x Graphic Performance (I think was mentioned)
Improved Wireless
Improved Cellular
None of these warrant an upgrade for me though.

FaceTime hd, which you left off entirely,is the biggest improvement IMO.

And the lightning connector is not "better" but is welcome for iPhone 5/ iPod touch 5/ iPod nano 7 owners who don't want to have to use separate cables.

I agree.

I read the rumors and just managed to get my refund under the wire. Yes I would have cared owning a slower, hotter, older iPad3 only 17 days old if I had kept it.

Yes, most loyal Apple customers who buy upgrades more often than DELL or HP will care.

I understand why some will feel ok and insist this is the price of buying technology but boasting of how many iPads sold, a good portion of iPad3s, felt like nearly being thrown under their Big Fat Bonus Bus.

Not classy, felt like DELL.

I was lucky but most were not.

People like us who are tech gadget geeks and hang out in forums like this will care. But the vast majority of iPad owners won't even realize that there's been an upgrade. Trust me, I know dozens of people like that and they just don't follow this stuff. Apple is not likely to make a big deal in the media about it either, so most consumers won't even be aware of this, and even if they were, most wouldn't care, unless of course the current model is a sluggish piece of junk compared to the new, which it isn't.

I, in fact, went in to detail as in why I am disappointed Apple released a fourth generation iPad already. And I stayed calmed.

All you are really saying are things like "I MEAN SHEESH!", "SNAP OUT OF IT!" "WOW." "FANTASTIC".

And the ironic thing here, you basically start with "Dude. Chill out." - You should chill out, and you shouldn't get upset about someone else having a different opinion.
