I think a lot of people are upset about the iPod touch is because it's not an iPod anymore. An iPod used to be a music player, but it's become a computer now - the only limitation being it doesn't connect to a cellular network. The iPhone, prior to the touch, was unique for being an all-in-one device, in fact THE all-in-one device.
Now that the touch does exactly the same thing (in fact more things), a lot of iPhone users (who by the way bought their phones less than 3 months ago), are probably a little irritated that you can get next to the same branded as an iPod. That doesn't mean the phone is any less useful or special, but I think it would irritate some.
Personally I don't care all that much because I bought my phone primarily for a phone, but even my less technologically inclined friend pointed out that the iPod touch is almost exactly like the iPhone - it even looks like an iPhone. Maybe Apple could have mixed it up a bit.
