I see alot of people ditching IPAD 1 to Upgrade to version 2. I really don't see the need to. I understand the love the upgrade....I suffer from that bug. I just don't see the benefit for me now. Also, I like the current black cover, I feel like it offers more protection.....the new cover seems flimsy (haven't actually handled it yet).

Just wondering if anyone else feels the same way.

Jim

I don't feel that I should upgrade my iPad 3G to the iPad 2 3G. It doesn't make sense.

But it's still hard to resist. :)

The processor and memory make a big difference, although we probably all wish for a slightly higher resolution screen.

Trying to resist.

Not sure I will be successful in the resistance.

I agree with your reasoning not to upgrade. I reached the same conclusions. Both versions are too similar, so it comes down to the excitement of the upgrade. Yes, there are modest improvements, but not enough to justify the cost so soon after the original.

The best bet is to hang tight with iPad1 and calmly wait for iPad3, which will probably be a huge leap over both previous versions.

I was on the fence, not really 'needing' the upgrade. The tipping point for me is the fact that I do 4-6 video chats every week (mainly Skype, some facetime) and often they include chasing my 3 little kids around my house. The iPad 2 is really the ultimate video conference device, at least for me where it's usually 2-4 of us trying to talk to 2 people. iPhone 4 is great for chasing the kids, but when they want to see their grandparents on the other end, the 3.5" screen leaves a lot to be desired. Also, my kids love the iPad 1, so they'll inherit that and I can finally use iPad 2 near-naked, with just a clear skin and smart cover. If it wasn't for the huge part of our lives that video conferencing makes (living 12 time zones from the rest of my family) then I would have held off.

It is a bit disappointing that it basically got iTouch cameras, not iPhone 4 cameras. I'd like to maybe see that on a 16gb, cheaper model, and a more deluxe model with better cameras and 64gb - I dunno just a thought.

I admit it has been amusing watching all the fracas. I'm sticking with my ipad1 for the time being, I may reevaluate in a couple of months after the accessories market has matured and app developers start to take advantage of the ipad2 enhancements.

The crux is the ipad2 doesn't currently offer a lot of improvement for the things I do on my iPad, so I have no major incentive to make the move at this time. If/when I upgrade I figure I'll get more resale than selling into a launch day buyers market and further benefit from avoiding sales tax through mail-order. selling in advance of the announcement was not an option, the value I gain from having my iPad now exceeds the loss in resale value of selling a couple months post announcement.

Clearly this is just applicable to me, others will have different value judgements and I think it's great that the second gen iPad has engendered such an interest as to create the long lines and shipping times. (it will also be interesting to see what effect ipad2 availability constraints have on the used ipad1 market)

It's not out here yet in Canada but i can say for now i don't really feel like it's a must upgrade... When i get the chance ill try one and maybe ill change my mind who knows... But one thing i don't like is the back camera... A front one is ok but the back one makes me think the ipad became more a of toy than a tablet... That's my opinion... Can't wait to see how the devs gonna take advantage of the new A5 chip...

Play with one in the store -- and I bet you will be able to resist. There is really nothing compelling for this one other than the hype. I really wish there were - even Facetime with this poor camera's looks, well poor as well. If you loved your Ipad 1 IMO there would be no reason to upgrade unless you have "Upgrade-Itis" - which in that case go for it :)

I avoid the crowd and went to the Apple Store this morning. Unlike last night, I can finally touch/use the iPad 2.

I have been an iPad owner since 4/3/2010 and glad that I still have it. There are a couple reasons I decided to buy the iPad 2, it's available in white, AT&T 3G (I didn't ditch the AT&T unlimited data on my iPhone 4), felt much lighter, and speed improvement. Other than that, I still prefer the design of the original iPad.

I'm learning to be more patients. Instead, I took advantage of the deal since iPad's price went down and of course this mean craigslist/BST pages was forced to go even lower.

That Conan Apple iPad 2 video wasn't very popular here but it's true that majority will buy what ever Apple releases regardless if it's worthy of an upgrade.

I just like the ergonomics of the new iPad better than the old one. Easier and more comfortable to hold. For me that alone is worth it. Not even mentioning the speed boost.

Compared both 1 and 2 at Best Buy and did not see a speed difference in safari.

Even though the iPad 2 might look overly impressive in terms of the changes made it does not have to be in order to make it a good purchase. Many people who are upgrading sell their original iPad so the upgrade cost is not really that much. Others may give their original iPad to a family member so it is still being used daily and this opens up the opportunity to upgrade. I don't think the iPad 2 is worth purchasing if you're upgrading and going to keep your original iPad sitting there doing nothing.

I just got back from my Apple store where I compared my iPad 1 with a 2 and frankly the speeds seemed very similar. I tried several different sites and compared side by side. Also, the weight didn't seem to be that much different either. Now yes, the 2 was a little thinner but my 1's size and weight has never really bothered me. The Apple sales person tried hard as he could to get me to buy one, but I really saw no real compelling reason at all to upgrade. Maybe next year.

Been running tests on my new iPad side by side with my iPad 1 and I find the new to be alot faster.

Also, I am away from home on a business trip now. Luckily there is an apple store five minutes from hotel. After I grabbed the new iPad the first thing I did was make a FaceTime call home. Got to see the kids before bed time (my wife has an iPhone 4). That alone makes it worth it for me.

I had to get it.. I skipped out on the first gen.

I am loving it so far(although need untethered jailbreak badly) and will trade this in for 3rd gen when it comes out.. LOVE apple

This is pretty much how I feel too. In Safari I don't mind seeing a grey checkerboard every now and then (it's nowhere near as bad as the squeaky wheels on forums will lead you to believe it is), im far from young and impatient. I never had any issues with the size of the iPad, and I never had any issues performance wise with how I use it. I just don't see any reason to upgrade at all, I thought seeing one in person and playing with it would change my mind but all it did was further solidify that I really see very little difference/reason to upgrade beyond aesthetic ones for how I use the iPad.

Maybe next year if there is something to actually upgrade for, I just don't see the iPad 2 as a huge upgrade or even upgrade worthy if you already have the first one. Its a very much a slightly incremental upgrade, nothing so spectacular that I wanted to run out and buy one.

In general use the iPad 2 doesn't actually feel much different than the 1 other than the physical size. The covers are poorly designed because the magnet won't hold it if you flap it all the way back under the iPad, it has to be folded into a triangle which is a bit cumbersome.

I actually have no problem with the case. I fold it back and the magnets stick. I also saw a video with a guy folding it back and his stayed on.

I even picked it up with the case folded and let the case sway and it stayed on. I actually like the cover.

Then you must not of used your iPad 1 extensively enough. The iPad 2 web experience is NOTICEABLY faster. Like how I'm writing this post via iPad 2 in the forum boards response box.

The iPad 2 is an awesome 2nd generation tablet. The sales will beat that of the iPad 1 once word of mouth gets out about how great this device is. The iPad 1 is quick but the iPad 2 is smooth and fast. Games alone are so much better due to the power of the iPad 2.

I'm holding out for the next one (iPad 3), maybe they'll increase to a 128gb option or something that will without a doubt make upgrading worth it. I just can't pull the trigger when my first gen is working so perfectly.

So here's my thoughts.

The smart cover is cute. It's enough, and it's SOMETHING. There are so few options right now.

But in practice, the smart cover isn't very smart at all. It allows for 2 different placements, like the original ipad cover, which I used until I found something better.

The way I use my iPad I need to have it elevated more than the flat triangle position, especially with my keyboard. As for vertical, it's TOO vertical for most uses.

But it offers some protection, some ability to prop the iPad up and it's better than nothing.

However, right now you know what I have on my little lap table? That material used to line cupboards with, the anti slip kind I had left over. And to prop the iPad up more in the back? A full roll of cupboard lining to prop it up another 4 inches.

It works, it makes the viewing angle perfect and allows for the perfect space to put my keyboard in front.

As well, the BS "The smart cover cleans when it closes!" is just that, BS. It's useless for cleaning, but it's soft and it protects the screen perfectly.

Having the back naked without me using my ghetto lap setup is slippery and terrible.

But seriously, that's just the smart cover. Forget about it. Get it for the fancy factor, it's better than nothing, and there's little else available in stores.

Now, as for the thing that matters, the iPad itself? Sure the cameras aren't top quality for stills, the front is a VGA and the screen resolution is the same.

But who cares?

The damn thing FLIES. Apps load CRAZY fast. Webpages load CRAZY fast. I can actually keep more than 1 thing open at a time. The form factor is great. It feels so much nicer in hand. I don't care for the weird iPod touch like gaps with the headphones jack and the charge/sync jack, but those are small things.

The speaker is louder and better placed.

I love it. I really do. I enjoyed the hell out of my first iPad and this is like getting some spec upgrades with the same idea. Would anyone whine and complain about them putting an iMac or something that had a bit more memory and a bit better CPU with otherwise equal specs? AT the same price??

Seriously - I think people need to put it in perspective like that.

A computer comes out this year that has XX ram XX CPU and whatever.

Next year a computer comes out with double the ram and double the CPU with the same hardware.

would that computer get as much grief for not having more upgrades? Maybe, but only if it was a price increase.

We get MORE for the same price. We get the better CPU, double the ram, thinner, lighter, but all for the same price. And the previous gen drops in price...

How can anyone complain about that?

Sure it'd be nice to have a better screen, but after playing with this device, I have NO qualms about my purchase, about waiting in line, about having to swap out my first one due to a pixel/yellowing issue (I walked in and out with a replacement in 15 minutes)...

So anyway, I'm far from disappointed. I'm more impressed than I thought I'd be. I can't see someone complaining about an upgrade at not "additional cost".

And seeing the lines of 500+ people buying this product at every apple store in the US, obviously I'm not alone.

And I'll be there for the iPad 3. Apple, in this, has given us more without charging us more.

Folded into the "tube" configuration, the smart cover makes an outstanding one handed grip. Folding it in half gives a big no-slip surface for holding it one handed too. Both setups make manipulating the device much easier for me and make a lot of sense in an augmented reality/camera situation. It's more functional than the original in my opinion.
