Look - it's so simple.

Buy what is out now. Buy it because you like it. Don't buy it because you think you'll like it. Try it out and if you like it enough, pay for it.

Next year when a new one comes out, buy that one too if you must. But the idea is that the iPad 2 should've been what the iPad 1 was initially when it unveiled. But then the ipad 4 should've been what the ipad 1 should've been as well. If you keep thinking like this, you'll end up with nothing.

I have a friend who is on the fence getting an iPhone since the iPhone 2g. The person is on TMOBILE. Kept on waiting for the next best thing - so the person skipped the iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, and now Verizon iPhone 4, then the person believes the iPhone 5 is around the corner. I will predict without a doubt this person I know will also skip the iPHone 5 in light of an iPhone 6 July 2012.

Just buy what you LIKE now. These are disposable gadgets. Not an investment!

Sounds like u haven't used an iPad 2 yet.
More than happy with my upgrade. But I definitely need a case on this.

But I definitely need a case on this.

that's a big reason I don't like buying at launch. I'm interested in the system as a whole, and a case fitting my needs is an important part of that. Smart Cover is cool, but not a complete solution, especially without a non-leather black one. $70 is past my willingness to pay threshold.

Noticeably lighter and thinner plus faster. Yeah I'll spend the extra $100 over an iPad 1.

We just got back from best buy and yea we were fairly unimpressed. Yea its thinner, but honestly it didn't feel that much faster browsing the web than 1st gen.

Honestly i was more impressed with the motorola xoom deal, that no one was even paying attention to. Larger resolution, tabbed browsing, no way im paying 800 for a tablet though.

Weird cause I was just playing with the xoom at Costco today and thought that it lagged too much and was too choppy in comparison with the iPad 2.

Selling the old iPad and opting for 3G and the browsing improvement alone was worth it for me. Holding in one hand feels a lot nicer too :)

I am loving mine.. LOVE it..

Just need to jailbreak it when it becomes available... it's awesome.

To be fair i didn't spend a whole lot of time with it, just looked at a few web pages and played 2 levels of angry birds.

Angry birds was noticeably smoother than on ipad1, and i was impressed by the desktop, the extra space due to the higher resolution was nice. I also thought the tabbed browsing was a really nice feature.

Dont get me wrong i love my ipad1, and obviously the 2 is an improvement, but i just didn't feel like it was very much of a performance increase. Also note, i could care less about cameras on ipad.

Yeah I noticed the big desktop appearance too. Not bad but glad I got the ipad2

Well I told my wife last night that she would be real proud of me. For some reason I really haven't caught the dreaded upgrade bug this time. I'm perfectly happy with my iPad 1 and won't be upgrading to the 2. I told her though that I probably would upgrade next year and at that point she could have my 1 :).

My wife was sad I did not upgrade since this one was supposed to go to her. I just can't see spending nearly $900 to get the 3G version I want and I don't want to get something less and be annoyed because I settled. :(

Maybe I'll try to get a refurb in September.

Cheers,

This doesn't sound like being a smart consumer. Just buy, then dispose, then buy the next version, etc. It's also not very environmental to just consume for the sake of self gratification. It's actually pretty egotistical.

Also would add it is indeed an investment. These days people can't constantly throw half a $K on whims like this, and expect to have anything left for retirement let alone paying bills. No wonder we're in personal debt to our ears. Unless you're wealthy, which I'd think most here aren't.

He is driving a 15 yo car, wearing 3 yo clothes and living with his parents:D:D

I don't feel that I should upgrade my iPad 3G to the iPad 2 3G. It doesn't make sense.

But it's still hard to resist. :)

The processor and memory make a big difference, although we probably all wish for a slightly higher resolution screen.

Trying to resist.

Not sure I will be successful in the resistance.

I'm trying too.

Obviously if you are buying a new tablet, the iPad 2 is a compelling purchase. If you're a gamer, the speed could be tempting, but I'd have to say the weight reduction is the biggest improvement.

Does anyone seriously use video chat on mobile devices though? It's just so absurd. With a laptop, adjusting the camera is simple and it sits on a stable base. Easy and effortless. I haven't met anyone who used mobile video calling (not just on apple devices) more than a couple times before the novelty wore off. I do skype overseas a lot, but don't see how a mobile or tablet could fit that well.

I guess my point is drop the cameras and therefore the price, because I'm stingy :)

Funny. Exactly what we're doing. Well, that WAS the plan, but now my wife doesn't want a hand-me-down -- I mean, would you? -- so I'm going to have to buy TWO iPad 3s next year. So the kids get the original iPad, so it works out. The original will be fine for them: the boys are still a few years from having something turned over to them it will bother me if they accidentally damage it or break it. And I don't want to give them something they have to sit in a padded box to be allowed to use.

If I had the first iPad, I'd probably hold out for the 3rd iteration. But in my case, I didn't have the first iPad, so it was worth picking up imo.

I'm happy with my iPad 1.5

4.3 is a nice upgrade for the original, web browsing is much better.

Looking at iPad 2 videos it's a clear step up for browsing again.
App loading speed and enhanced game graphic detail also much beter.

Is it worth $250 more ?

That's a personal choice but judging by the lines and iPad forsale ads,
most think it is.

4.3 is great, solved my safari crashing issue and added a few more general features. Basically turned my iPad into 1.5. I went to Apple and instead of buying a new iPad 2, I picked up the HDMI acessorie and am able to output videos and slideshows to my HDTV. Although first gen iPads do not have the mirroring capability (graphics card related).

All in all, my iPad 1.5 is going to keep me happy until the iPad 3 is announced. I believe retina display is something that's really worth the upgrade.

as far as cases, I highly recommend waiting for Otter Box to release one.

Having looked through most threads, seems the high, high majority of those who bought are happy. With that said, seems more than i thought are a bit dulled by the buy. Surprised really...and a bit glad I did not buy the iPad 2

I am pretty sure he meant sell the old one, not just throw away. There is someone out there who would buy the old one and make use of it, or gazelle, ebay instant, whatever.

The way that I look at it is you can sell your iPad 1, and buy the iPad 2 for $200, and enjoy that for a year, sell it, and buy the iPad 3 for $200.

-OR-

You hang onto your iPad 1, and sell it when the iPad 3 comes out which you would then pay $400 for after the money you get for the iPad 1.

Either way you are out $400, but in the first one you get to enjoy an iPad 2 while in the second you are stuck with the slower, bulkier iPad 1 for another year.

Also note that the prices are just an example.

P.S.S. If you really cared about the environment you wouldn't be using technology to begin with, it's hypocritical.

Don't forget the accessories cost of transition as well and replacing cases, protectors, docks, etc. The scale of this depends on the individual of course, but is a factor to consider especially if one tends towards the pricier cases.

There's no single right answer, each person has to choose what they prefer.
