As always, there's an app for that

"Ringtone" from the app store will do this for you, then just drag it to your ringtones (now you've added it) in iTunes

yea really in like 3 minutes you make a batch of ringtones from most of your songs sync and transfer if you dont like syncing with itunes then well it sucks because thats what apple wants you to do.

Maybe it is annoying for some you cannot do it from the phone but that is hardly enough to say it is a pain. Just like the ringtones tab 2 seconds setting up in preferences which most people do when they setup their itunes lol.

that is what im talking about chopping it to 30 seconds, converting it away from mp3, then having to set it threw itunes... thats where i find it difficult. Vs having the song in your playlist pressing on it and set as ringtone. I am also to referring to a song, not the sounds that come with the phone. Same goes with notification.

Notifications has always SUCKED with the iPhone. You wait 15 minutes for an email and then do not even know you got it.

Careful these iPhone fan boys can not tolerate any negative comments about their prized possession.:p

Just like someone said what is this 2006 with custom ringtones? exactly, why the hell have they not got with the program? This has been a feature since 2006 sort of how it took them forever to get picture messaging. When ever you have to replug your phone to set a ringtone is terrible.

so its like, plugs phone in drags song onto itunes syncs with phone. Opens up app, edits song, make sure and hope its approved by whatever someone said in a previous post. connect phone back to computer, syncs, grab song put on desktop, grab song from desktop, throw but into itunes. Sounds like a morning routine.

well yea i mean if you wait until you want to set a new tone to do it you will find it tedious, i would say try chopping a dozen at a time and you can just change it right on the phone as you can store a lot of tones.

it would be nice to cut tones on the phone but the problem with this is apple wont allow file system access to move tones where they need to be which is the critical flaw of ios.

1. First get the song you want to make the ringtone from.
2. Open it with quicktime pro (or any other editor)
3. Cust out the section you want as the ringtone and save it as a new mp3.
4. Import it into iTunes
5. in iTunes go into
Preferences > Advanced > Importing

Set to Import using: AAC encoder 128Kbps

And/OR:

6. Right click on the file you want as a ringtone and select:
Convert selection to AAC

Your file will now be converted to an AAC file. (appears in iTunes under your original file) - call it a different name, so as not to confuse, ie: instead of Song.xxx, call it Song1.xxx

7. Right click on the new file, click on show in finder (or open folder on windows)
8. You will now see your AAC file, all you have to do now is change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r
9. Drag the file out of the folder to the desktop, then drop it back into itunes. (Hover over your 'Ringtones' in the left menu list of iTunes, or it will just go into your main library)!

Sync with your iPhone. Done.

Eating pie is A LOT easier than that...

I am usally down for steps like that to get something nice or special, not something i was able to do in 2 seconds with my Sony Ericsson WALKMAN series, or my previous phone. Just saying, it would be nice if it was a lot easier.

if you have a mac, garage band allows ringtone creation that is considerably easier. All you do is move a box that can be changed in size from anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds to the section of the song you want, and then click send to itunes...it automatically becomes a .m4r and is ready to sync

Now i am going to have to explain this to someone who is not so tech / computer savy. This is why i was seeing if there was a suggestion box and maybe enough complaints over time we can see a change or 2 in one of the ios updates.

I didn't think anyone even messed with custom ringtones anymore. The driving force for crap like this seems to be kids, but I've noticed all the high-school aged kids seem to set their phones on vibrate all the time - presumably so they don't get in trouble for their phone ringing during school hours.

The only custom ringtones I ever seem to hear any more are middle-aged redneck women who seem to like to have some country song as their ringtone.

See its not necessary to go out on a limb and explain unnecessary things like that. If thats what you think, or seem to think then fine. I still know a lot of people, heck everyone i know has their own custom ringtone that does not come with the phone. So excuse me Mr. Executive.

That's why I created AutoRingtone. It lets you easily create custom Talking Caller ID ringtones using dozens of TEXT-TO-SPEECH voices. So it can be used for funny or professional (or both) ringtones. Why try to guess which song is for which contact when your iPhone can tell you who is calling, literally!

Ringtones what is this 2006?

Agreed. Music ringtones are extremely tacky, I can fully understand why Apple wouldn't instate a feature to crop music for using as a ringtone.

Any who, the process really isn't too cumbersome if you get a decent app for it, though I don't see why you'd want to.

Wasn't there a way to create ringtones in iTunes? Or was that just spending .99 to buy something you could create for free?

There was, but you had to:

a) Own the song from the iTunes Store
b) Pay a further $0.99 and choose 30 seconds of the song to make into a ringtone

Apple switched to just selling pre-selected 30 second song segments as ringtones.

lol i find it funny your name is ScoobyMcDoo and your saying custom ringtones are for kids....whats ScoobyDoo for?

If using a Mac get iRingtone from mac app store (it was only 99p) then you simply drop any track which is drm-free then choose the length you want then bingo, click create ringtone and its done. The good thing about this app is the sound quality is great too. I get what OP means, that compared to some phones it is a little long winded but depends on how often you change your tones?

It's not necessarily difficult, more of a hassle really, having to trim the song in iTunes, convert it to AAC, etc. Why can't Apple implement a system like they have for trimming videos you take on your iPhone, except trim the song to the length you want and save it, bam, simple. It saves to the ringtones folder in your phone and you can use it instantly.

im guessing so the still have a market to sell ringtones to the lazy people

I can understand the OP's gripe. Your computer shouldn't be required to create a ringtone. It is a much more involved and tedious process to create a ringtone on an my girl's iphone than it is to create one on my G2X. On the iphone I have to go through all the trouble of needing my computer vs with my G2X I just tap the song and click "use as ringtone" and I'm done (or you can trim if you'd like). I don't have to be at a computer to do it.
