Great post.

Anyone who defends Apple on this front is clearly not even trying to see the other side of the coin. The extent to which he is trying to paint over this glaring omission in iOS is simply laughable.

Also, we should be able to set our messaging tones to whatever we want, whenever we want (sms, email, heck, even notifications).

OH NOEZ!11! iOS doesnt cover every childish gimmick under the sun.

The OP could have course just change the brand of phone they use. I cant imagine they'll research that before they buy it either and then bemoan the lack of a novelty feature on a public forum somewhere.

Apple is full of gimmicks i dont see why they cant tackle this one.

I think it's pretty easy. What I hate is not being able to set my own SMS and email alerts. I hardly even use the phone and when I do it's for dialing out.

that is what im talking about chopping it to 30 seconds, converting it away from mp3, then having to set it threw itunes... thats where i find it difficult. Vs having the song in your playlist pressing on it and set as ringtone.
I'm assuming you're using garageband for this. You really find this difficult, or is it more annoying that you have to go through these steps. Thats really not that hard dude.

It doesnt need to be tackled because one or two people think its difficult to do.

If you cant be bothered to put something in garageband, chop it down and export it as mp3, you can buy ringtones in the itunes store.

a LOT of people have ringtone issues

It doesnt need to be tackled because one or two people think its difficult to do.

I have 300,000 customers and I get support emails (for iTunes, not my ringtone apps) daily. With Android, select an audio file and choose 'Use as ringtone'. Done. With Apple, 'convert to m4a, rename to m4r, transfer to iTunes but make sure you have 'copy files to media library' checked in your preferences or it will display but not transfer, then transfer to phone but make sure you have Sync automatically set, or you have to drag it to the iPhone, or you might lose all your music, then hope that it's there or maybe it was too close to 40 seconds, etc.' The process is ridiculous and prone to error.

HAH! That's not even correct. I'll leave it to you to figure out what's wrong with those instructions.

Stop defending an unnecessarily complicated process. This is Apple, not Microsoft. It shouldn't be so error-prone.

I understood he said its so 2006, as in an old feature. Just like how flash with the camera was and old feature but took them forever to get with it, just like MMS was an old feature and it took them forever to get with it.

Actually I think that by saying it's 2006, the original poster was suggesting that the whole using custom ringtones thing has kind of died out by now. I still think it would be nice to have the option for (easy to make) custom ringtones. Although the poster made some sense because it does indeed seem like custom ringtones are less prominent nowadays

Ringtones aren't a life or death situation. No one dies, because you don't have a custom ringtone for your friend in Vancouver.
Let's get a little perspective here.
-what if he is away from his computer? Why should he have to go all the way home just to use a new ringtone?
-what if his computer is down? Why should he have to get his computer repaired just to change his ringtone?
-What if someone is using his computer at the time he wants a new ringtone? Why should he have to wait on the person to get off his computer to use a new ringtone? Or Why should that person have to get off the computer so he can use a new ringtone?

Nobody made it out to be a life or death situation. I layed out a series of things that happen in real life. If you can't see that then there is no point in furthering this discussion with you.
