Judging by your constructive posts in this thread you'd probably know all about that.
Lets put this into some persective then since you seem so keen to liken this to the arguement surrounding MMS messaging support.
Well it's likened to that because of the ridicules post and title "Am I the only one pissed about no turn by turn GPS". It wasn't I wish it had turn by turn or it would be great if it had turn by turn, no its the I'm pissed that this device can't do something that no one ever said it could.
What is constructive about this thread to begin with?
Then there is the point that the device has been out for just a little over two months, maybe people could exercise a little patients and self control. It's basically the same reason the US economy is in ruin, everybody wants everything right now.
Apple did not specifically say that there will be turn-by-turn support in the iPhone 3G. I'm not disputing that at any stage, however they stated that there was a technology inside it (GPS) which is used for this purpose and it is likely that a lot of people will draw an inference from that statement that turn-by-turn navigation will be supported.
They didn't say "It's got a GPS chip in it, but you won't be able to use it for what most GPS chips are used for, it's only going to show you where you are on this map, which is something we've been doing for ages anyway but we thought we'd throw in a pointless bit of technology."
There are lots of GPS devices that don't have turn by turn, actually the only ones that do are really the automotive units, handheld topo units don't (I have 3) the one for my aircraft doesn't, nor does the one for my boat. It not a pointless bit of technology, its used for location based services, such as letting you know what stores, and restaurants are around you, which is actually what it was sold as, not a replacement for your automotive GPS unit. But hey why read right, I'll just buy it and bitch.
Now, liken this to the following scenario
They say at the same announcement that the new iPhone supports Push Email and "it works great with our new Mobile Me service." 'Fantastic,' you think, I've always wanted push email on my iPhone, it is after all a convergence device. So you go out and spend money on it, get it home and go to set up your email account with your exchange server details all ready. But wait, what's this? It ONLY works with Mobile Me! So you go on your friendly forum and say "Oh, I'm dissapointed with this. They said it had push email though, and since limiting it to one provider makes it pretty much useless to the majority of people, they'll probably bring something out soon so I can use my own account." Meanwhile, all the people on your friendly forum are replying "You idiot!!! Where did they ever say it would work with any other email account? God you're so stupid. If it doesn't work with your email account why don't you just go and buy a phone that does! God!", along with the classic "I don't need/use push email and so they shouldn't bother, there's no call for it." (That last one comes up A LOT in the MMS arguement I've noticed.)
Again it clearly was advertised as working with Mobile Me, just because the average American doesn't have the attention span (or ability) to read three sentences, why is that Apple's fault. It works perfectly with my Mobile Me account. and if your business depends on getting emails within milliseconds of them being sent, once again get a device that is ultra reliable and known for that, that being the Blackberry. Once again every device can't be everything to everyone. Get educated before you lay down your hard earned money. If you buy something that doesn't work as advertised. I have sympathy for you, if you buy something that doesn't have the feature that you need and it wasn't advertised as having those features I have zero sympathy for you.
Why would they bring something out to work with other providers? Last I saw Apple was a publicly trade company expecting to make profits, not a non profit charity. When is Blackberry going to allow other email providers to have push email on their devices? Maybe what they should have done was just make everyone pay $5 dollars more a month and everyone uses either mobile me or an exchange server?
Meanwhile Microsoft have had a look at the iPhone and have said "We've developed an ActiveSync client that will allow iPhone users to get their mail from Exchange servers. We're just having a chat with Apple to see about releasing it. They want it written with their own SDK." And then silence.
It's their platform and its up to them how they want to control it, again if you don't like the control they exercise then the Apple iPhone as sold isn't for you. On the same token if they let every dork release what ever app they wanted with no control, when it crashes and locks up your iPhone then the people would be bitching about Apple not controlling the quality of the apps. If you want to release your self from their control then go ahead and jailbreak it, but when things screw up, suck it up because its your fault not Apple's
