The iPhone GPS feature is great!!!!

.....if your walking / hiking /backpacking.

you do need the turn by turn audio directions if your driving unless you want to live dangerously and increase your probability of a crash looking up and down at the phone.

Don't get it?

excuse me?

1) the iPhone comes with GPS and has the ability to do turn-by-turn. The guy specifically asked in his post that he doesn't want responses mentioning Garmin and Tom Tom. You were the first poster and you had to go there? He has every right to bitch. The only reason there's no turn by turn in the iphone right now is because apple likes to release features every few months so that they attract new customers. People who skipped on the iphone these past few months will want to finally buy one when they realize that it is more functional than their gps unit and only costs 200.

2) the guy can use a bluetooth headset, how exactly would this cause him to crash? how is this an example of society losing its mind?

Oh so you need more help to understand:

Memememememememememe. Give me my way. I want what I want. Give it to meeeee. Give it to meeeee.

(Not that anyone ever promised such but you'll bitch and whine anyway.)

Bunch of (&(&^ crybabies.

Really, if it gets added on as a feature great. But to cry about it. Immature.

There now you made me say it. Yeah, I had to go "there" and mention a $100 complete GPS solution.

How do you juggle a phone call and GPS on one device safely anyway?
People would most certainly be driving into guard rails and others.
:p

Bt headset or answer the phone once you know its safe to do so and put it on speaker phone. Or don't answer till you pull to the side and call them back. BT headset would be best.

Okay...

So using your BT handset (I like the Jabra BT500 btw) you accept the call after turning the wrong way down a way street.

And your friend gets to hear your collision.

turn by turn is never comming, don't get your hopes up.the gps chip in the iPhone is just not good enough.period.

Now the real problem, Apple and AT&T blocked the sale of this program...

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch navigation device maker TomTom already has a version of its navigation software running on Apple's iPhone and has plans to sell it to consumers, a spokesman said on Monday.

"Our navigation system runs on the iPhone already," the TomTom spokesman said after Apple announced a new version of the iPhone that will include global positioning (GPS) capability.

The spokesman did not say when TomTom, Europe's biggest maker of car navigation devices, would be ready to start selling the software.

(Reuters column snipped

If you trace down the source of that article, you'd find that it all stems from a TomTom spokesman talking about how some of their guys ported some nav code and tried it with the iPhone simulator . (Didn't you notice that the article predated the 3G sale by a month?)

He then went on to say that, because Apple usually deals only with American companies, TomTom would have to think hard about whether it was worth creating an iPhone version. Since then, not much has been said.

i used to use a n95 8gb and garmin as turn by turn navigation. And don't tell me gps chips on cellphone ain't good enough. It has saved me MANY times. Until the iphone 3g gets the same quality turn by turn navigation my n95 still has a permanent holder on the dashboard.
