I've been with AT&T (well AT&T->Cingular->AT&T) since 1999, and I've generally been happy with it. I'm in Philly, and I get reception on some areas of the subway, even. And AT&T customers are the only people who get reception from the basement our office building.
Sure, I've had problems with them -- was charged twice for an application on my old phone, etc. -- but every time I've called and complained, they've given me credits. In fact, one of their business care representatives claimed he could change my upgrade date from July 23 to the 11th, so I could get my iPhone on the day it came out. Turns out, he did not have authority to do that and I got to the AT&T store (didn't wait in line long) on the 12th and was told they couldn't give me that price. I "pitched a fit" and they gave me a $75 credit. That clinched my decision to get the 16 GB phone.
My advice to anyone with AT&T problems is to call them and push the button for "cancel my account." They will do anything within their power to accommodate you, or at least that's been my experience.
