I think phone calls are a remnant of the past, an unsociable relic that has no place in today's age. How many phone calls are truly private?

Okay, that's your view, but government surveillance has nothing to do with your feelings on phone calls.

I mean talking about things you wouldn't talk about if the person had walked up to you? I think FaceTime is the way forward, it's as if someone walked upto you and said hi.

This is all about parent's raising and your internal barometer. You try using facetime 100% of the time and let us know how it goes.

If you were designing a phone just having voice makes no sense

I dunno all the carriers sell dumb phones.

It's not that phones need to change its us, the way we use them, that needs to change.

My phone is not substitute for a laptop computer. I want an electronic device that can make and receive phone calls reliability with good quality and check my email and respond as needed. Everything else is a nice to have. I don't want to carry around a brick, which is why I got the iphone rather than the Z30, which I really wanted.

No no, this is not how it works in the Apple world.

Apple fans buy what Apple sells, and that's how the system works, and is the thing that's hard for someone to duplicate by others. Brand loyalty above all else.

Like you can have a NIKE T-Shirt and a no name one of better fabric and sewing and people will buy the NIKE one blindly.

Many people now say OMG hate large screens, the iPhone screen is perfect size.

Give it a few years, these exact same people will be using a larger screen iPhone and saying that is perfect also.

It's the way it works.

Remember a smaller tablet than 9.7" was laughed at until it happened.

It happens again and again.... Sad to watch really

iPhone screen WAS perfect, now I'd like to have a slightly larger display because smartphone's usage change a little bit over the time.
But I'm speaking about a SLIGHTLY LARGER display .... something like 4.5-4.7" and a sleek form factor like the actual lineup.
The way android devices had gone is ridiculous: the are growing release after release just to try di be different or better than competitors. My wife's galaxy s4 is almost unusable for me. It's at the edge of my usability concept. A 0.1" larger than this and I can't use it.
I'm very glad apple didn't follow this silly line ....

I've never understood all the arguing over this.

Here's a hypothetical question.

What if....people who wanted smaller screens, bought an iPhone or similar sized android handset?

AND

People who wanted larger phones....bought them!!

And lastly, what if people didn't have to go on the Internet to justify their decision?

Pretty tripy stuff

No, these will be mostly android fans that are finally able to buy an iPhone that matches the size of their ego.

"My iPhone's screen is bigger than yours, therefore I must be superior." blah blah blah

So.............

If you are correct.

What will the Apple fans all do when Apple launches a new phone, next year or the following year with a larger screen?

Will they find another brand that offers then the screen size that is "Currently right" Of blindly decide then that this new larger size is now suddenly right and buy it anyway?

Unlike android, millions of people have chosen to invest stacks of money into the iOS ecosystem.

I don't know if its just me getting stuck in my ways, but I'm finding the current craze for huge phone screens getting quite annoying.

Yes, but Apple isn't going to super-size it like the others. If anything, they'll make it wider and slightly longer while at the same time decrease the wasted space above and below the screen (to make it better proportioned).

Once they do that, you'll look back at the iPhone 5/5s/5c and find it laughably skinny and awkwardly tall. Trust me on this one.

I recently purchased my first iPhone a few weeks ago after owning a large screen Android for 3 years. I was a bit apprehensive about changing to a smaller screen. But the iPhone 5s display re sizes everything so nicely. I also like how I can use one hand and touch everything with my thumb with ease. I couldn't do that with my old Android. The smaller sizes comes in handy when I'm using my phone in places it's frowned upon.

The point I'm making is will Apple and other manufacturers abandon 3.5-4" devices or relegate them to 'entry level' specs, thus effectively removing the choice to have a decent and compact smartphone?

I use my phone mostly for data-related stuff, social networks, forums, email, texts etc. i find the 4s/5 screen just the right size for that, comfy to use 1-handed, portable and not bulky. I'm not saying that larger screen phones should be banned or phased out, just that there should continue be a high-end option for those of us that like the smaller sized screen.

Someone at work has a Galaxy Mega with (I think) a 6.3" screen. It looks so unwieldy and awkward to use as a phone!

I disagree with the OP. At first I thought the 4S size was perfect for me until I upgraded to the 5 and I was thinking I will never go back to a tiny screen. Having played with the Note 3, I really loved the size, specially for web browsing and watching videos, problem was I did not like the OS since it doesn't run as smooth and does not fill as optimized as iOS. If Apple does indeed come out with a large screen similar, I will upgrade in a heartbeat. As far as power goes, I don't have to worry about it since I carry with me a 1400mah battery pack.

iPhone with bigger screen size like 5 inches would be awesome..why? I use FaceTime all the times when I am on the go. I mean deaf people like me always depend on FaceTime for calling and you lucky bastard can use Siri! :apple:

What? Just buy what you want and let others do the same? What just buy what suits your needs/wants? Just be content with what you have and not put others down for their choices? Wow now you're just making too much sense…...

I don't know why your brining the government into this. I mean your conversation what you are talking about doesn't need to be shielded from others around you same as when someone walks upto you you don't huddle together and whisper in each other's ears.

It's far more natural and normal to FaceTime even more so in a crowd because its like someone you know walked upto you and started talking. Everyone around you see and hears.

With a phone call its one sided and many times you see people relating what's being said to those around.

if it were FaceTime it would not have this technological limitation.

And sitting in a cafe face timing is way more natural and less annoying to others than a one sided phone call

That's why I say phone calls are a poor reality and really unsociable and unnatural.

It has nothing to do with patent raising and internal barometer. It's what's more natural. More normal. And just plain works socially way better.

With FaceTime you can answer your phone while a waitress takes your order. Let her see the caller. Let the caller see her, where you are. They will wait to speak or hang up. The waitress with contine with your order. It's more natural. Like they walked up. Saw you were busy and waited to talk. Compare that to answering your phone while a waitress takes your order. Also same works for in a cue to buying something in a shop. Compare which one works better. More naturally.

They only invented phone calls voice only due to their inability to do FaceTime technology.

Ps. If we want to go over the government surveillance issue. Those that don't FaceTime will stand out more and so everyone would wonder if they are upto no good or simply taking a private call. But most calls are not super secret are they. Most can be heard by others as if the other person was there.

I see people annoyed by phone calls in public all the time. I believe there's scientific research on this phenomenon and why people get annoyed. Generally, I only make the rare phone call from within the privacy of my home, and I prefer to text or e-mail people… usually to figure out where to meet in person.

There will always be a need for some kind of real time voice communication. However, I believe that need is fairly small, and getting smaller.

I'm happy with the iPhone screen size. I don't think a larger display would help me much, but I also hardly ever use a web browser on my device.

You actually said the phone calls aren't private, meaning to me NSA. You certainly could have a phone conversation in a non-English language and that would render you conversation more private from the immediate vicinity but still under NSA scrutiny.

Facetime is just as obnoxious to people who don't know or don't care you are talking to someone. I get it, you don't like to call, that's your view...but don't believe for one second I want to see who you are talking to with facetime anymore than I want to hear it. Cell calls and facetime are both obnoxious when overdone. Plus there are legitimate reasons why a person might not want to appear on screen. Not to mention technology like facetime requires yet more servers in the mix from a third party.

I guess we are completely different, why would I answer a phone call when a serving attendant is about to take my order?

Facetime is a novelty for me. Texts and emails are good for short communications of a neutral nature or where you cannot make a phone call, like in a very noisy environment. (Imagine your doctor, texting you that you have cancer)

There is also scientific research backing up the claims that we are becoming a population of people that do not understand how to communicate with our fellow human beings.

It will always be the same. Some people will not be happy until there are 11" phones and 3" tablets.

I'm happy w/the current 4-5" displays on phones. I'll use a tablet or computer if I need more real estate. The manufacturers are welcome to make 9" phones, but it's a niche market and probably won't justify the cost.

Let's stop it already. If large phones sucked so bad Samsung would not have released the Note 2 let alone the Note 3 and every Android manufacturer would be stuck at 4 inches. The majority of people have spoken with their wallets and so many people here refuse to accept that fact. And lets not forget that not every Android phone released is 5 plus inches. Motorola, Sony, Samsung and HTC have mini versions of their headsets.
I find more fault with Apple's one size fits all philosophy. I can see 3 iPhone models (4" ,5" and 6") on the market. Let people decide what fits better for them. Not some armchair blog poster that feels that every phone should be small.

All of you are complaining about it now, but as soon as Apple adds a larger screen, you will be lining up to buy the iPhone 6.

A big screen thread! Holly cow, I haven't seen one since they "if Apple doesn't make a big screen THEY ARE DOOMED!" crowd quiet down since the 5s.

Maybe Phablet sounds too much like FAT.

Why a larger screen? That's the reason I got the 5S over the Z30...screen was too large.

I wear a suit, I can't carry around a brick and need a screen size that is between useful/functionality and wearable.

Hopefully Apple gives us the option of two different size screens. I prefer the current size or maybe 4.3 to 4.5. I like the one handed operability , the ease of pocket storage and holding something to your head that is not rediculose in size. However I do see the reason why others prefer a bigger size for gameplay, reading etc There is no one right answer and that's why there should be two different size iPhones as everyone has a different preference

What do you mean what will they do?

Unlike android, millions of people have chosen to invest stacks of money into the iOS ecosystem.

So they will forget their current hatred of a larger screened phone, and buy it anyway, then decide they like it?

Or buy it, and bitterly complain they are still not happy, it's the wrong size, they want Apple go go back to the previous size?

I have a HTC One with a 4.7" screen. I like the size even though I find it hard to use one-handed. For me, I wouldn't want anything larger than 5".

I saw someone the other day with a phone that had a large screen. It was almost the size of a DVD case. The idea for cellphone was to be mobile. Having a larger screen is not being mobile.

I like the size of the iPhone. My favorite is the iPhone 4. But we know there are people with huge hands and maybe they want a larger screen. When I hear other crying about a larger screen, it makes me wonder if they are just following what the commercial says and not what they really want in a smartphone.

Definitely don't like the trend. I want to see something new'er … A lot of what we are seeing has been done. Writing on a smartphone we saw back when the whole PDA phase started. Apps you can download vs purchase at a store. Back then, they started making the screens larger too. At some point there will be a cut off and return to the true mobile phones.
