We use ipads as EFBs, electronic flight bags, they replace pretty much all of the “paper”

Foreflight was even bought by Boeing
Gotta love technology. So I’m guessing this Foreflight includes an E6B, AF/D’s, sectionals, approach plates, etc…
What if the battery dies? That was the whole reason why paper sectionals were always required…

We have dual iPads, we also have battery tests and a minimum charge before dispatch, plus chargers in the planes, on top of that most of the airframes I have flown also have the approach plates and frequencies in the avionics suite

I even have my logbooks in foreflight

What did you fly?

I quit Using Both because I care about my long term health. It’s too much radiation ☢️. Two cellular antennas & two Bluetooth antennas = 4X the radiation exposure leads to all types of health issues not including using the wireless AirPods smh

You know much about radiation and how much it takes to hurt someone? ;)

Imo in time, the phone will be replaced by a wearable(s), at least from Apple's point of view.
For example, the iPod. The iPhone essentially absorbed the functionality of the regular iPod, and then the Apple watch essentially absorbed the function of the smaller iPods (nano/shuffle). If Siri had improved, the Apple Watch can even replace most basic iPhone tasks like calls, sending messages, etc. I believe that's Apple's intention, especially when they announced the cellular model. Add on the rumored VR/AR with air typing, that would essentially eliminate the iPhone, in a sense you need a larger display and keyboard on top of the Apple Watch.

You can imagine Apple watch, Airpods, and the VR/AR headset as needed. It may sound silly, but I don't think it's impossible in the next few years.

Of course, there are harsh reality, with battery tech still lagging behind, and few carriers supporting eSIM/Apple Watch cellular.

I actually heard someone say recently they don’t have electronics in their house because they are allergic to radiation. My god, the stupidity! It’s the old “I can’t see it so it’s not there”. Dude, you’re being peppered by billions of radio emissions every second. Oh well, it’s just not worth the bother.

On topic…if I could use a watch without needing a phone to set it up then I’d go watch and iPad only.

You forgot the wifi antenna too. It’s worse than you could possibly imagine.

I've tried the old 'leave my iPhone at home' and just use my AWU while out and about. I found reception was a bit sketchy, ring volume not really loud enough for out and about in the city (yes, I had vibrate enabled also) and conversation volume not adequate. Maybe ideal in a quieter environment, but for the moment, it's not really working for me - which is a shame because I love the concept of leaving your phone at home but still being contactable via your watch! This is the sort of stuff I dreamed of whilst watching Star Trek as a kid!

Seriously though… As much as we may shake our heads and/or laugh/joke, for some people it is difficult to grasp/accept (the) logic. Or it could be an extension of something such as Histrionic Personality Disorder.

As someone who may or may not have accidentally had the radar on on the ramp, these little devices are the least of your worries 😂
Y-e-a-h... 🙁

Just a couple of examples:

Nope, I don’t have, and never have had, an AW and I have zero interest in having one. It works for some people, but in my eyes it’s an expensive and needless toy.

I have my iPhone and on my wrist an old-fashioned analog watch.
I wouldn’t call something that gives you better insights into your health a „toy“. I got a S7 to see what it can do. After two weeks it told me I’m pretty out of whack, which made sense. I’m happy to get confirmation for the things that I was wondering about.
Also after my analog watch broke I needed a new one.
Compared to this watch that works without an external light source, that was a toy.

I have an iPhone Mini, small enough for me.
Then I have a Polar training watch, had a couple of them in a row. Small enough on my tiny wrist.
Good for training, and sleep tracking. That's it.

No Apple Watch, not a chance - bulky, ugly and full of useless stuff to me.
They really are bulky and ugly aren't they? At least the Samsung equivalent looks nicer - but even then - meh :D

iPhone for when I'm out and about, iPad when I'm home. Much easier to type and read on the iPad, and games and videos are also better on the bigger screen.

I hear ya.
But you know what is even easier to type and read on, with an even bigger screen? A laptop or desktop….

In all seriousness, I don’t judge anyone who enjoys using their Apple watch or their iPad. I just personally have never found a use for either of those devices. Sometimes I get close, but they just always kind of felt like second class devices to me (by which I mean intentionally crippled by Apple).

So seems I’m swimming upstream

I got a ultra, the whole point was to be able to leave my iphone in the car or at home, but still have the necessities

Go to any cafe, restaurant or bar and you see tons of peeps heads down in their phones, as if they are playing battle ship with each other lol

I’m guilty of this too, plus on any given day I have my wallet, iPhone, keys on me, just lots of junk to carry around, like a pack mule

Figured the Apple watch (why isn’t it a iwatch BTW?) would allow me to not haul around my iPhone all the time, figured it can nav, text, email, call and a few other needed things on its own, solo

We’ll it does, but some stuff it needs it mommy, which I don’t get, I mean my iPhone can do pretty much everything the watch can do and much better, if I was worried about my health I could just get a cheap Fitbit or one of those rings, So I don’t get the watch + phone, if I’m going to wear a watch and have my phone, my omega and other mechanicals are far more sexy, guess they didn’t think folks would buy a cellular watch because they don’t want to have to have their ever growing in size smart phone on them?

I’m I the only one who doesn’t get the point of having a Apple Watch and carrying iPhone at the same time?

Yes

Not the only one. Really frustrating you can’t really make the watch act as a stand-alone device. it’s so close yet so far! And it’s purely software limitations keeping it away. Might sound crazy, but I’d pay even more for a “phone edition” watch that allowed me to ditch the phone.

Not only would I love to drop the weight of the absurdly large iPhone, but I’d also love to have a few less distractions with me at all times so I can really enjoy the world around me.

It sound like you haven’t “retrained” your mind yet to not need the phone… yet. I recently picked up a watch with cellular. Theres definitely a hump to get over releasing oneself from the tether of the phone, but lately I’ve been making conscious decisions to leave it in the car or at home when doing things. It’s taking me back to the 80s and 90s when one can sort of feel autonomous, and yet have the knowledge that I can be reached if needed, or call someone in case there’s an emergency. Of course the phone will display more information and such, but the whole idea is to declutter your head. And that takes time.
This is the goal. But it honestly feels like the watch is a little too dependent on the phone to pull this off at all times.

Like if I need directions, the map on the watch can’t zoom so getting a useable “map view” is impossible. And while I’m very willing to get rid of a web browsing, game playing, video streaming, camera, etc. Device and free myself from the smartphone, I’m not willing to go back to not knowing how to get anywhere or printing out directions or carrying maps or buying guidebooks to a new city. To me, maps not being particularly robust is a dealbreaker.

As is the fact that most of my travel apps, for things like hotels, planes, and rides only function with a direct link to my phone. I’m not going back to checking in at the front desk of a hotel, getting stood up or fighting for a cab, or holding on to a paper boarding pass, the new versions there are definite improvements.

I do like my watch, but the best answer I’ve found is to turn the phone into back and white mode so it’s less fun to look at, then put very few apps on and lock things like safari behind parental controls so you have to make a very conscious effort to use them rather than doing it out of boredom. I hoped the small size of the watch would allow the same type of behavior without carrying the phone, but it’s a bit too limited for my taste.

I have both and can’t imagine just relying on just the Watch. That being said, it seems like Apple is gradually increasing the size of the Watch to where someday it may get there.

The watch can zoom. Just double tap the screen map and use the crown. Unless I’m missing something in your description. I think the things you described though are things that you would know beforehand you’d have to use the phone for in general. So you’d carry the phone knowing it’s for those particular cases. The watch can be used for all the other everyday things, except for “special” use cases (hotel etc). But I get it. I’m not picking up a Thomas Guide anytime soon.

Don't you remember?

Now, tell me, why is it good, that you need to carry around two devices, when you could have only one?

For me I feel odd not having a watch on, it also shows a respect for time, I very rarely see anyone in my industry who doesn’t wear a watch 🤷‍♂️

When I check a message on the watch I’m 90% sure most everyone knows I’m checking a message or email or something, if I’m in a meeting I don’t check the Apple Watch, but that’s not a Apple Watch thing, if I’m in a meeting with someone I dont look at my very non electronic omega to see the time ether, IMHO it’s disrespectful
There is literally nothing more disrespectful in meetings that when people who lose track of the time and allow them to run over.

That’s what I was going for, how’s it working out so far for you?
It works great for me and I love the option and not having to have the phone. There are a few times when I've thought, I wish I had my phone but those are few and far between.

I’m I the only one who doesn’t get the point of having a Apple Watch and carrying iPhone at the same time?

Is it just me or this post feels like it belongs in 2015.

It’s not for everyone and it’s called an Apple Watch because Apple doesn’t see it or want it to be a tech device but rather a fashion or athletic accessory.

Sheesh the amount of redundant posts here is becoming a bit off putting from this site and forums.

Don’t have any sleep issues. I know a number of people with AW and I know they like them. But I still have zero interest in having one.

Mind you I don’t do online banking either. I don’t need it.

Hahaha and I’m just the opposite. Everything I do is automated and electronically stored. I converted all my family’s old photos to digital during Covid. And have all my paperwork digitally as well. Everything at my fingertips. Easy, Peasy.
