i’m just curious, why on earth did you get the ultra if you don’t care about the health stuff?
You could’ve literally gotten an SE and saved $600.

The GPS, dive sensor and fit and finish, the Ti and especially sapphire lens were important, I also got $200ish off the watch

The problem is that apple wants to sell that phone junk to bind you to the rest: without iPhone the watch does not work, CarPlay does not work, both functions that you could have evolving the iPad since 2010 with iOS but with the same functions as iPhone, and no less.
Will Apple ever do that? No, if not, who buys him that phone?

Ive wanted an independent Apple Watch, the CDA and investors didn't. Ive was infamous and hunted, but he was right (Try to explain it to those who still buy a “Pro” tablet today that weighs more than a portable Mac and costs twice as much to do 30% of what a Mac does).
I bought the first Apple Watch just so I didn't have an iPhone with me, in part I succeeded.
I bought an iPad mini and almost completely cancelled the use of iPhone.
I don't need an iPhone, I just need an Apple Watch and an iPad mini, or a portable Mac if Apple made the Watch independent, in the end I only need iPhone for CarPlay, always because Apple wants to sell me an iPhone.
I don't need iPhone, it serves Apple, because without I don't buy Apple Watch, without Apple Watch I don't buy AirPods, and without iPhone I don't buy services that are not compatible with iPad, Mac or other Apple devices (HomePod and others).
Apple sells iPhones because it's the only thing it has left. He sells Macs simply because until a few years ago MacOS was the spearhead of OSes despite derivatives, from iOS to tvOS, from audioOS to iPadOS were full of bugs. Today MacOS has also inherited derivatives bugs, and Apple is less and less interested in selling Macs (think of replacing them with iPad).
iPhone serves Apple, not customers, perhaps those invaded with photos and videos, who would actually need a good camera.
iPhone could serve until 2010, when it finally put on sale the firstborn, which was an iPad, and not an iPhone, but Apple deliberately made it useless.
Try to explain it to people that he actually doesn't need an iPhone in 2023, but he needs a series of real and independent wearables and at worst a portable device, squared, whether it's an iPad mini or a portable Mac (even there, in 2023 still crushing the keyboard of a typewriter), and see how he will treat you like crazy.
Zero vision of the present, zero ability to project themselves into the future, live in an eternal 1999, like the first Matrix, and are teased by Teslas or other similar nonsense.

We’ll said, and yes the watch being software limited to not connect to car Bluetooth doesn’t feel like a simple oversight by Apple

So seems I’m swimming upstream

I got a ultra, the whole point was to be able to leave my iphone in the car or at home, but still have the necessities

Go to any cafe, restaurant or bar and you see tons of peeps heads down in their phones, as if they are playing battle ship with each other lol

I’m guilty of this too, plus on any given day I have my wallet, iPhone, keys on me, just lots of junk to carry around, like a pack mule

Figured the Apple watch (why isn’t it a iwatch BTW?) would allow me to not haul around my iPhone all the time, figured it can nav, text, email, call and a few other needed things on its own, solo

We’ll it does, but some stuff it needs it mommy, which I don’t get, I mean my iPhone can do pretty much everything the watch can do and much better, if I was worried about my health I could just get a cheap Fitbit or one of those rings, So I don’t get the watch + phone, if I’m going to wear a watch and have my phone, my omega and other mechanicals are far more sexy, guess they didn’t think folks would buy a cellular watch because they don’t want to have to have their ever growing in size smart phone on them?

I’m I the only one who doesn’t get the point of having a Apple Watch and carrying iPhone at the same time?
You ask: [sic] "I’m I the only one who doesn’t get the point of having a Apple Watch and carrying iPhone at the same time?" and I say yes, you are.

Watch, phone, iPad, laptop, etc. are all different devices, each with its own benefits. Just because some features overlap does not mean devices are either/or. Unless one chooses to make it that way.

I guess, but if I have my iPad next to me, no way am I browsing the net email videos flight planning on my iPhone, that being said I’m not carrying ipad around with me like a phone

That being said x2, the iPad works just great without a iPhone and vise versa, so far I like it ultra, but it does bother be that it feels like Apple intentionally somewhat software crippled it

I wish to do the opposite. I want a bracelet. I collect watches and as capable as the Apple Watch may be, I don't want to replace my watches. I prefer a bracelet with the health sensors and a minimalist display with the iPhone doing the displaying. I've tried things like Fitbit but they can't compare to Apple's.

I don’t think l it replaces a proper timepiece, my speedy will get the same amount of wrist time, just some of my work watches like my seikos might not

If I’m doing someone more formal I’ll toss my iPhone in my pocket and put one of my watches on, if I’m going for a rip on the motorcycle or just doing work stuff or a hike, iPhone sits at home or in the car and I’ll go solo with the ultra

My watch is primarily used for notification alerts. Sometimes it's not possible for me to take out my phone to read a notification, reply to a text etc. I wouldn't use a watch as a replacement for my phone, although it has come in handy once or twice to answer a call when my phone was 'upstairs' on charge. I should add although my watch has cellular capabilities, I don't have a dedicated plan to use along side it as a Bluetooth/WiFi connection suffices.

Same here.

Can’t see a watch without glasses. I only need glasses when working at a computer, the rest of the time moving about I don’t need them. I’m not gonna have glasses on a lanyard around my neck just to glance at a watch….

when my eyes get worse then I can get an Apple Watch I guess. 😭

Agreed. Production, Consumption and Communication have been the three main purposes served until recently with devices which overlap having gone mobile (MacBook, iPad & iPhone). As stated there has been overlap with users asking questions about the adequacy of having one device to rule them all ...

The delight of that convenient and excellent still/vide camera and the functionality of Navigation add to the mix.

So too does the Health & Well-being thing.

Enter the Apple Watch ...

I think I'd also wear a bracelet instead. I was a diver for twenty years but never sported a big chunky watch except when on a dive trip and have not been attracted to doing that for the AW.

But what next for wearables?

The iPhone is small - or can be - pocket sized and is light when compared to much other stuff we carry about on a regular basis. The package of functionality inside will get lighter.

It's the UI peripherals which represent the biggest challenge of imagination and implementation for wearables imho.

Apple Watch has these X-Large faces that are quite visible. My eyesight isn't bad enough to need them, but I like some of the big complications. I do find it uncomfortable to read text on the watch, so when I get text notifications, I reach for my iPhone or iPad. But the watch lets me wander the house without my iPhone, and when I get a text alert, I raise my wrist to see who it's from. I have personal icons set for my important contacts, and because the watch displays the icon, I know who it's from, and decide whether to go back to my iPhone or wait til later.

Point being, there are plenty of ways the watch can be useful without actually having to read text on it.

Indeed. Just not for me, i roamed around the Apple Store with an Ultra for 10 minutes, just wasn’t worth the money for me even when the employee set it to larger faces etc.

Im just not there yet, eyesight wise, and I don’t want additional strain on my eyes. I very much like the styling of the Ultra.

Ive just gotten glasses in the last year as well, massive change.

I find I use my phone less when I wear an Apple watch - mainly because I quickly address notifications and messages without getting sucked into the phone.
Exactly. This is why I enjoy my Apple watch so much. When I am at dinner/lunch or a meeting I can quickly see a message or notification without rudely pulling out my phone. It works for me.

They let you just walk around with the watch on?
