If your using your phone primarily as a communication device and NOT as a personal entertainment center, then you don't need an iPhone (or any smart phone for that matter). Entertainment is really the whole POINT. Get a really small flip phone.

Hopefully THAT sinks in. :)

Yes, primarily. I'm glad that at least sunk in

And how am I going to send emails and use whatsap with a flip phone?

Phones in 3 years time at the current rate of size progression;

The High-End Android Smartphone market is now stable at 5.0 inch screen phone(next is HTC's 5" phone). It won't go higher than this(Note being exception).

Correct. After you pinch and zoom, you don't need a magnifying glass.

No, after pinching and zooming YOU don't need a magnifying glass.

You sure you don't need a magnifying glass?

That's just one example. Don't make crap up.

You're the one making up crap. Are you really suggesting Apple sells millions and millions of devices that are plain unreadable? Don't be ridiculous.

And furthermore, who in their right mind loads full size pages on a phone screen? And if you have to because a site doesn't have a mobile version, double tap will save you from breaking out the magnifier. But you know that of course.

And that pic isn't native resolution  nice going

Yeah you're probably close to the only one. A 4" screen is not going to burst through your pockets.

It's not going to weigh them down either.

You ever think that, perhaps, a 'smartphone' just isn't for you? No one likes to use a magnifying glass to read text, browse the web or play games and with a 3.5" screen (or smaller, as you suggest), and that's just about what you have to do. Perhaps you just use yours to make phone calls?

Funny, this YEAR (2012) I have used my phone as a phone exactly 5 times. Once to wish my mother a happy mothers day, once to wish my brother a happy birthday, once to call my landlord, once to call my realtor and once to bitch to the IRS (I hate talking on the phone). And yet my phone is dead at the end of the day every single day (and I keep it plugged into my computer all day at work).

I use it to surf the web on my daily train commute. I use it to communicate with friends via text message. I use it as a navigation device. I use it as a GPS plotter for my running. I use it as a music listening device. I use it to play stupid little games. I use it to watch youtube videos. I use it to capture pictures when I don't have my DSLR with me. I use it for online banking. I use it as a shopping list. I use it as a reminder tool. I use it as a day-planner. I use it as an e-reader. I use it for a radio. And on and on and on.

I am a busy 33 year-old professional that is always on the go. I have never once wanted a bigger screen and I would bet I use my phone more often than most, except for stupid teenagers who can't put facebook down. The more, smaller, lighter crap in my pockets the better.

PS... this is my 3rd one. Got the original, the 3gs and the 4s.

The point is you have to pinch and zoom, just like everyone else.

You're not the only one. I don't even use a case on my iPhone because it makes it too big.

I'd love one that's slightly smaller.

That doesn't want a bigger phone in my pocket? I like the size of the current iphone models and actually wouldn't mind an even smaller option maybe.

I have my desktop for my power computing at home and work.
My laptop for power computing when I am mobile.
My iPad for productivity uses and as a media device when I am mobile.
My iphone is a text, map lookup, quick email, puzzle game, music device all the time. I have zero need for it to get bigger.

Bring us a SMALLER iphone.

Nonsense. You can't view full size sites properly on a 4 or 4.5 inch screen either. You're trying to argue something that can't really be argued. Why can't you live with the fact that there's a category of people that sends emails, takes notes, browses the web, plays games, sends messages, uses navigation etcetera on a compact smartphone?

Because that's the typical Fandroid response. If it's not the small screen/can't read argument, it's the other one; the dreaded SPECS! They go one about why anyone would buy a phone running single core, with such a small amount RAM, when the newest/greatest Android device is running Quad Core with 1GB of RAM. They usually fail to realize that Android needs all that in order to run efficiently. Regardless, it'll never end. Its like the Windows vs. OS X argument...

I'm fine with the current design. The size is perfectly reasonable.

At the rate screens are growing, you'll only be able to carry your Android phone in your cargo pants pocket or man-purse.

It's a smartPHONE, not tabletPHONE. :p

Nope... You are not alone. I too like the current size or if necessary, no bigger than 4 inches with the very same form factor. Very easy to stash away in a pocket and easy to use, using one hand. Had the Galaxy S2 for a very short time and returned it because of its 4.3 inch size. ;)

I have an iPhone 3G, an iPhone 4, and a Galaxy Note (which is my current phone). On both iPhones, if I double tapped to zoom, I usually had to pinch and zoom to see whatever I was trying to read on websites. I'm not some newbie iPhone user. Now that I have the Note, I rarely have to pinch and zoom anything. That's just a fact.

So, I can live with the fact that people need compact smartphones. Can you live with the corollary (i.e., that some of us need a bigger phone)? You were the one who made the comment that anyone that can't see the iPhone screen needs to see an optician. That's all I was responding to. You're the one stating the phone is fine the way it is. The fact is, many people want bigger.

I don't think you're the only one. I believe that people just have gotten used to their phones now replacing a lot of what they used a computer for so they just want it a touch bigger to not have to pinch and spread so much. (...I heard how that sounded). I do think you're a bit crazy for wanting a smaller screen than 3.5" though. I've used 3.2" Androids before and while not as bad as you'd think, there's a huge trade-off in usability. 3.5 is really the smallest a phone should be.

An iPhone the same size as my 4S, but with a larger screen will do me just fine.

+1 a larger screen would be nice, but not at the expense of making the phone bigger. I liked the size of the HTC Aria from a couple of years ago. The screen was just a hair smaller then my iPhone but it wasn't noticeable. It was light and compact.

A Note? Oh, you mean one of these?

galaxy-note-sidetalking-555.jpg

Of course you don't have to zoom on that, it's the size of a small laptop

And I didn't say that anyone who can't see the iPhone's screen needs to see an optician, I said that if you need a magnifier to use a phone with a 3.5" screen, you need to visit an optician. Which is true, at least in the iPhone's case. And that's where you felt the need to come in. Because on your Note you rarely have to pinch and zoom anything.

Well, then try to to speak for the other 90% who DO use our SMARTphones for things for which we need SMARTness, which is not a communication device. :p
You think? How about email, skype, whatsapp, social networking, web browsing etc? Can't do those comfy or at all on most dumbfones. Whether you like it or not, lots of people use their smartphone primarily as a comms device. What do you consider SMARTness? Streaming youtube and playing games?

How about "don't care"? I'm apparently alone in the category of those who could take or leave a larger-screened iPhone. I'm perfectly happy with the 3.5" screen. If it had a bigger screen, I'd be fine with that so long as the device doesn't get bloated along with it. But I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a new iPhone just for the larger screen. I don't do anything where I need the rumored 176 extra pixels. This isn't an upgrade that ranks anywhere near the priority to me that the retina display did with the 4 or gaining 3G did with the 3. I think people are making way too much of a deal out of a 1/2" increase in height.

I think that maybe, just maybe a 4" phone might be to big for a phone. I will wait for the next iphone and see what apple does. That being said, I think people are jamming together the uses for a smartphone and saying they need more screen real estate for what they do when they are using a smartphone. Think about it folks, what you large format desiring folks really want is a smartinternetaccessdevice, not a phone. The other problem is if you look at what the service providers have in the selection of just 'phone" they are all awful. Their radios usually aren't that great and some of them have no way to sync up contacts from the desktop to the phone. I wish Motorola would bring back the old flip razr's. They were a good PHONE and that's what I need MY device to do, make reliable phone calls, that sound good.

This is what will happen: During the keynote, the Apple team will explain why they're making a larger screen device. Only then will the adamant 3.5-ers eat up the magic and be convinced. Until then, it's wasted effort.

My Galaxy Nexus needs two hands to operate comfortably. Otherwise, it feels like I'm going to drop it while reaching across the screen for some obscure button.

I got a Galaxy Nexus because I was excited about ICS and I ended up going back to an iPhone after a week because of this very reason. If Apple can achieve a slightly larger screen without increasing the size of the hardware, then fine by me. I hope they eventually drop the home button and go with virtual buttons. It works great with ICS.
