One thing I can tell you about those Apple "geniuses", most of their answers to questions like that should be taken with a grain of salt. You could ask the same question two five "geniuses" and get 5 different answers.

And, by the way, I think my use of quotation marks around "geniuses" is very appropriate.

Clearly you have only "geniuses" at your Apple store. We have "Geniuses" at ours. They are far more consistent in their answers. The capital G must be some kind of seniority ranking symbol :)

On the other hand "Geek Squad" has no special connotation.

I'm sure they do know answers to a lot of questions, but certain questions about, for example, will a reservation guarantee you a phone on launch day, will illicit varying responses from different geniuses. But by referring to themselves as geniuses one is led to believe that they always have the correct answer.

The bumper does improve reception, however, in my opinion, it also feels really cheap and ruins the look of the phone a bit. If the reception was the same, I'd never use it.

The iPhone bumper was okay but instead I went with a Griffin Reveal case. It is essentially the same thing as the bumper but with a clear plastic back protecting the underside of the iPhone 4.

The reasons why I didn't want the bumper:

1. The headphone port became too recessed to use some of my accessories.

2. The dock (charge) port became too recessed to use some of my non-Apple charging tips, for example my iGo Apple tip would not work with it.

3. It left the the entire device exposed minus the sides.

There have been many genius level minds through history that had one area of expertise and were total dolts at must anything else. i.e. A genius at solving space time issues may not be able to make a good cup of coffee.

Some people read all the documentation about events and policies. Others study the repair manual. Some wear the Genius shirt, but have no clue. In some cases people are told not to answer some kinds of questions, while others choose to ignore the instruction.

FYI - a reservation is just that. If nothing major happens to the box enroute, it will be waiting for you on launch day. At least this has been the case with Apples reservations. Your mileage may vary with ATT, Radio Shack and Best Buy. But that has nothing to do with a Genius.

I went to the Genius Bar. His screen indicated I'd dropped 11% of my calls since June 24. No free bumper. He told me to hold it different and use Edge!

I'm amazed at how many people take the marketing term 'genius' and apply it literally.

Sure, some Apple marketing guy made a mistake, but don't punish those poor college students who make minimum wage working there - they didn't self proclaim the term 'genius'

Good luck with the Reveal. Had one for my 3GS, and while it looked nice, it ended up scratching the hell out of it. Griffin's products are cheaply made and it shows. Mine stretched out, thus letting dirt and grime in which caused scratches. While I have a small scratch from the bumper, the quality of the case is still so much higher than Griffin's and the form factor is great. I'm a fan of the Apple Bumper.

I'm not familiar with the Apple Bumper... I do, however, know what the "Apple" Bumper is :D

???

Steve Jobs on iPhones new antenna design: "it has never been done before" pretty much pointless new design when you need to cover it up with a bumper.

I read your thing and was wondering which is better iphone or nexus one?
:apple: iPhone 4 16GB black, :apple: iPhone 3GS 16GB black

Can anyone tell me how widespread scratches from bumpers are? I read somewhere that a particular person had issues with the Apple Bumper causing small scratches in the corners of their iP4 due to hard plastic balls in the corners of their bumper. Can anyone else confirm?

Why is Apple in quotation marks in the thread title?

Because there are a lot of cheap knock offs going around. Ebay is the place to look for said cheap knock offs.

^ no scratches here and I don't see anything in the corners that could cause them. I've had my phone for a week and its been in the bumper since the beginning.

Plastic scratching stainless steel? I don't see how that's possible.

I just got my bumper yesterday and don't see anything that could scratch, plastic or otherwise, the corners of the Iphone. I do agree bumpers are ridiculously overpriced, but they are also the nicest cases on the market right now. Iphone and bumper truly look like they were designed together, so I don't feel it hinders the design of the Iphone at all.

Water is sometimes used to cut metal. They use an abrasive such as sand to do the cutting and the water is the carry medium. You can get scratches from sand or dirt caught between the bumper and the phone. The bumper will cause the foreign material to scuff and scratch the phone.

I have had a bumper on from day one. How would I know if my phone was really a POS without the bumper? Guess I'd have to take it off for a while to see if it sucks without it.

Well, yes, water is often used to cut metal, but then the metal is cleaned, polished, etc. after that. I'm guessing that if something scratched the Iphone, it was something abrasive that got in there during installation of the bumper or it slipped in there afterward. I had that happen plenty of times on my 3G, even what I thought of as the "best" cases (Speck Candyshell and Switcheasy CapsuleNeo) allowed some grit in and some wear occured on the Iphone itself - so I had to continually had to remove the case and clean them to make sure that didn't happen. The bumper seems pretty tight, so I don't think that'll be too much of an issue, but I plan on taking off every so often to check it anyway.
