Ya except the fact that we basically know everything about the guy, his phone number, place of old employment, etc. Even if you believe he hijacked the account we know he's live in the US at least for the past year as his old place of employment apparently said he worked there until 2008. Like i said, if this was a scam he would have sent me my tracking number by now (even if fake), but he tells me he hasn't shipped it yet.

Don't you mean that the guy who originally owned the account worked at the car dealership? The guy who hijacked the account could be anywhere.

I agree. Very well put.

But in the end it's not the buyers fault . It's Paypal/Ebay that are doing this. The buyers here are just taking advantage of Ebay's ill-conceived rules and policies.

It's seems like they don't do any market research at all. These new rules need to be either totally scrapped or modified in order to protect sellers (that's right-sellers)

Very true. If there's a loophole, people would use it. Who am I kidding? I like loopholes too. :) The only difference is that I wouldn't complain if the loophole got closed or if I got burned.

It's odd that SELLERS need protection on ebay now. It used to be the other way around. With all these rules and regulations what's happening to big sellers? Who would ever have the guts to sell expensive items if the rules and penalties are so draconian.

It's obvious from my reading of this thread and the rules that its easy to pull off a scam on the BUYER end now. If I put my mind to it I could gather 'evidence' in my favor etc just to trap a SELLER by the paypal rules and loopholes.

This probably explains why I've only bought one item off ebay in 10 years - a poster for $5 and have 3 feedback. The good thing is that there is no incentive for a nigerian to hijack my account! :D

This guy is either really careless and didn't count on savvy tech people of MR looking up his info and tracing him or he is really smart and has you guys looking into the original Ebay account owner, Or maybe he is legit.... The third option is getting more and more unlikely.

No winning or losing here and definitely no sides. Just some common sense.

Oh well, you're out a cheap laptop and some built up expectation but at least your money is safe.

The one thing I don't get is when everyone says there's a restriction on taking money out of the account, what's the ending of this scam? How do they get access to the funds?

Anyway, I'm off to bed and will look forward to reading the 5 new pages in the AM. (I'm stationed in Kuwait at the moment, should I pop over to Africa and say hello to the sellers? :) :) )

Classic overreaction.

The result of letting a serious deficiency go on for too long. The reaction will finally be disproportionate to the problem and ends up doing more harm than good, all a result of poor management or a buggy business model.

And I would like to take a look at the Ebay and how its run. Why did they makes such drastic changes in the first place? . Obviously they were forced to but how? Most likely ligitigation centering around neglegance with large settlement fees in order to avoid bad puplicity.

In other words...shady doings :D

They don't. Which is why I still think there's a 1% chance :)

Paypal just confirmed to me there are "unresolved issues" with the sellers account and suggested that I go ahead and start the dispute process..

Sorry to say I would file the claim now, as you are not sure how much money they have left in there, he said he shipped, if you get it send the money back, however I would be one of the first to file the claim .

I would not be slow in this at all because to many sales are involved.

Part of their business model. They're in this to make money and all analysis (I'm a management consultant not an ebay powerhouse so take this with a grain of salt) points to ebay being in trouble.

Inititally they had to attract sellers so the rules were skewed. Now, they have captive seller, power sellers, sellers who have costs associated with moving their business elsewhere. EBAY can either screw the sellers or attracrt new buyers. They've gone with the latter. I'm sure there's a P&L analysis somewhere in their corporate office that breaks this equation down into $s. Business they lose from sellers is more than likely offset by new buyers and stock price increases.

Capitalism 101 :(

Who pays ebay fees BTW? Buyers or sellers? I'm trying to make my own quick spreadsheet to figure out ebay's incentive here. I've learned more in this MR thread than B-School on this business model. :)

Does everyone get back the entire amount in case of a dispute or does it depend on the amount of money left in the account to be pooled and divided?

You get back your cake.

And if they actually end up sending it you eat it too :D

bugout, not trying pile on, but a MacBook is not a Sony flat screen you can buy at Costco for a great price. We all know what the price is for a Mac, falling for these scams is the reason our economy is in such a mess now. People should purchase what they can afford and these scammers would have not dupes to fall for their obvious scams.

I hope you get your money back.

I paid with Visa, through paypal. Will wait until tmr then file dispute with paypal, this sucks. If anyone gets any change in shipping tracking info pls let us know.

Some people don't seem to understand the concept of a hacked account.
BTW, a phone number in the US does not mean it's traceable or based in the US.

Some people don't understand that every time a scammer gets more money, it's an incentive for them and costs everyone money.

- Higher overall cost of goods via higher credit card fees built into the actual product price.
- More scammers will get started = more spam and more scams
- More scammers will develop more complicated scams that are harder to detect for the average uninformed person
- Scammers laughing at the suckers

They CAN access the money via a workaround. That's why they do it.
If no money is involved, they won't be there.
