Paypal hates when you do that. They dont like the credit card company getting involved until they had a chance to resolve it themselves.

Who cares... Certainly not paypal. Call AMEX immediately and open up in a dispute.

Also, File a claim with the FBI and give them the info. In the notes let them know that this guy did this to 50 other people and write in a dollar amount in the notes text (they use screening software). Give them any names and phone numbers you came across, basically all the info to make their job easier.

Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)

I got burnt on a Gen 1 Macbook Air from someone in the US. They tracked the guy down within a week and his family had to post the funds or he was going to jail. In a return email which the entire purchaser list was CC'd, he was begging for the FBI not to arrest him. He claimed he sent $30k to his contact in Hong Kong and the guy took off and didn't ship (likely story). Everyone got their money back. AMEX withheld payment to paypal so I didn't have to sit around and wait for them to get back to me.

:(

Does everyone get back the entire amount in case of a dispute or does it depend on the amount of money left in the account to be pooled and divided?

If something goes wrong, the buyer and seller are fully guaranteed. I have been on both sides of it using the PayPal and eBay system. Both were rather large transactions, bigger than $1200. Both times, PayPal ate the loss and gave me 100% of the money.

As a seller, when the buyer's payment never cleared the bank but PayPal had already given me the money and had me ship item to eBay buyer. As a buyer, when the item wasn't "brand new" as described in the eBay sale page, the eBay seller wouldn't issue a refund and PayPal did. It's one safe system in my opinion.

I do not get all of the lost hope and thinking everything is a scam. It has been all the way through this thread. There still is no information these people will not receive their MBAs new in box in two days if shipped today via USPS priority mail.

I got my macbook air on ebay for real cheap. I don't buy unless the guy is really personable, responds to emails promptly and can provide "Real" pictures of the product. If you own a computer especially Apple products you have a digital camera. So its very hard to not look like a scammer if you follow those rules.

Some people don't seem to understand the concept of a hacked account.
BTW, a phone number in the US does not mean it's traceable or based in the US.

Some people don't understand that every time a scammer gets more money, it's an incentive for them and costs everyone money.

- Higher overall cost of goods via higher credit card fees built into the actual product price.
- More scammers will get started = more spam and more scams
- More scammers will develop more complicated scams that are harder to detect for the average uninformed person
- Scammers laughing at the suckers

They CAN access the money via a workaround. That's why they do it.
If no money is involved, they won't be there.

I traced the guys cell number to AT&T cell phone network. Doesn't that mean it's based in the US?

He could be roaming anywhere in the world..

I'm beginning to think you are right, this guy usually answers emails very late at night, like 2 am onwards, up until the morning, then dead silence during the day our time...damn...filing tmr.

The emails I just posted from him happened within the last hour.. so he's up.

He did refuse my call on skype though.. prick..

my fingers are crossed for you guys...

question: if faced with this same situation on ebay, would you do it again because you think you have paypal/ebay to fall back on?

screw this.. I'm buying an open box from macmall.. What I was going to do in the first place.. I thought it would be nice to save $330 dollars..

That "insurance" paypal has is to make people buy things without having to worry.. That's why its there.

No, i saved about 400$ on this (considering i could have used education discount as apple store). All this stress/hassle not worth 400$CAD for me

Sorry bugout (and all the others), I was really holding out hope for you guys. Hope you're able to save money on an MBA someplace else.

Wait a minute. It's not over yet, for all you know it's in the mail and on it's way. I think maybe your a bit premature in your thinking that it's a scam...

I am waiting for the first person to leave feedback, and then watch it snowball from there!

Come on anyone?

He should still go to paypal/ebay/amex now. If it ends up coming in the mail on friday, he can just drop the complaints and nothing will be lost.

You could also tell him you want a full refund now, and threaten to leave negative feedback today if he doesn't accept it. It might not do much but it could be worth it to him to not have the negative feedback if he's still trying to get the money from his paypal account...I dunno.

I can't leave negative feedback until after 7 days.

Also, people don't' fight over whats left in the account, paypal reimburses everyone what they paid regardless of what they recover.
