and here we are getting 5GB of free storage to backup a phone that cost us like 800+ bucks.

I've been using amazon Flickr and dropbox to back up my photos. works like a charm. iCloud Photo is too confusing and expensive

didn't somebody say:

iCloud is a big bag of hurt......oh wait....

My complaint with this service is that it's NOT like Copy or DropBox, or even iCloud with synced folders that automatically upload anything in it to the cloud and sync to all your devices. It appears that you have to manually upload files via the desktop app.

I don't know this for certain, because they tell you absolutely nothing about the app or the way it works on the site, and I'm not signing up for a service just to see how it works.

So essentially, this (again I say) appears to be nothing more than an FTP site. I already have unlimited storage with my website, so I can fire up Transmit and back up all my files manually if I wanted to do that. For that matter, since it doesn't appear to be automatic, it's just much faster and cheaper to buy a large external storage drive and backup to that. I can store that drive off site if I wish, and I don't have privacy issues or the ridiculous slow upload/download times for massive amounts of files.

If Apple made Music Match to 50,000 tracks, then I would not be thinking about alternatives to it, like this.

or $10 per 25k tracks in addition to the $25

So the 3 month trial didn't register with you or did you not read more than the title.

3.3 Our Use of Your Files to Provide the Service. We may use, access, and retain Your Files in order to provide the Service to you and enforce the terms of the Agreement, and you give us all permissions we need to do so. These permissions include, for example, the rights to copy Your Files for backup purposes, modify Your Files to enable access in different formats, use information about Your Files to organize them on your behalf, and access Your Files to provide technical support.

This worries me.

...

That's what I've had to do with this service that we get for free as a Prime subscriber. They are *supposed* to be fixing that at least on OSX to give us a desktop app, which for now we have to do via a web browser so it really sucks.

The one thing it does do automagically is upload from your phones with the app installed. Since that (to my shame) is how we take the vast majority of our pictures, it works pretty well so far.

Well, at least after I upload the rest of my 400gb historical iPhoto Library.

Though for only $5 a month, I may just upgrade to have all my media saved in yet one more location. I think I have about 4 cloud redundancies so far besides local and offsite physical backups, lol.

Yea, but the problem with copy or Dropbox is that you actually have to have equal amount of space on your local drive. So even if you have the Dropbox 1TB plan, if you don't have the local space, you won't be able to take advantage of that. And as far as I know, Dropbox won't let you set sync to a external drive as default (at least the last time I tried).

Also, giving that some laptop are shifting to faster and lower capacity SSD, it's not a bad idea to off load your stuff over the net.

One more thing to keep in mind, as these cloud services are becoming more competitive I have started to look at other factors as well. And giving some of Dropbox's treatment of privet data, I have shifted most of my sensitive stuff off of their service already.

No SYNC CLIENT app. Amazon pulled it a while back. No idea why, that let's them directly compete with Dropbox. I have DB for another year anyway, so hopefully in a year they'll have a working sync client for Mac.

Actually, the 16GB is perfect for Corporate buys. Employer-provided phones are a huge piece of Apple's business.

I'm sure 8GB are perfect for them too but it's 2015. Some corporation (like mine) give us a workphone & allow us to use it as personal ones too - it would be nice to have something that only has 3GBs of space after apps/OS. Prices of flash memory have certainly dropped - Apple just seems stingy.

apple is in last place in cloud storage

I'm not sure of this, but I assume that companies that give you more storage for free or at low prices, are hoping you will operate within their realm. And I think it works.

I have an iPhone6, 2 iPads, & a mac desktop. I love my Apple products, and their hardware works very well. Their operating systems have been dependable, although I think Yosemite and iOS 8 have been problematic. But I pay extra for that Apple hardware. I would think that Apple would like to keep me in its' realm by offering more storage. It clearly is not the case.

Honestly, I have no idea how the iCloud works. It seems unnecessarily complicated. And a meager 5GB for free is basically stingy. Also, this situation where if you take a picture off the phone, it is deleted from the cloud. What the hell is that?

I have traveled outside the Apple world. I use Google+ to store my photos. I have Prime, and can store unlimited photos. I also back up my photos to Flickr. Here's the rub. I do find myself using Google and Yahoo services more because of this. Google Docs, Gmail, and Google+. Yahoo is a secondary email service, and Tumblr is something I use at times. Google just gave me and extra 2GB of storage for free just for making sure my account was secure. That makes 17GB free, not counting photos.

This takes me away from the iCloud, Pages, Apple mail (if that's still a thing), and possibly other Apple services. There are times when I wonder why I'm paying a premium for a phone from Apple, when I operate so often outside their world.

While I absolutely love all these companies moving towards unlimited storage, it really isn't even something I can use with Comcast's data cap. I signed up for BackBlaze a few weeks ago and had to cut it off and cancel service before the month was over because I was already getting charged for going over the 300gb limit.

$12 for unlimited photos is an amazing deal, especially for photographers who want multiple backups. Good job amazon. Now, ISPs, get your act together and let me use the services I pay for.

Anyone can confirm that this does not include any data mining Ad driven revenue whatsoever? All our content will be private and not shared to any third party companies? If so then thats a heck of a good deal!

Well now, when it come's to Amazon's Unlimited Cloud Drive, the Sky's the limit!

While I understand your issue with Apple's "stingy" free iCloud services, they are far from the complicated world you live in. I mean, how can you say that iCloud is complicated when you use a basket full of other storage options. That seems complicated to me. I'm not saying to choose Apple but one storage option outside of Apple should be enough.

The biggest thing stopping me switching from dropbox is app integration. Lots of stuff works with dropbox out-of-the-box. Hardly anything has Amazon drive support.

How does Amazon Cloud Drive compare to Dropbox? Specifically video playback and upload speeds?

So OT, but where are you at that you are getting charged for going over Comcast cap?

I've been blowing about 800gbs/mo and on track for only 500 this month.

I currently only backup to an external HDD, but have been contemplating cloud storage for a while. My biggest "what if" is....what if my external fails? Then bam, all my files gone.

I really don't know anything about cloud storage, would this be a viable solution to completely backup my Mac? I'm away from my computer right now, but I think I have about 1.2TB of data. Movies, music, pictures, etc etc. Or is there another cloud backup service you use that works well for you? Ease, security, features (such as unlimited backup), etc etc.

I personally use Crashplan, unlimited, custom encryption key, and versioning as well. Only downside is that it eats up some memory, but since I store every thing in my local server it doesn't really affect my daily operation.

I have about 800GB on it.

I seriously wish Apple would use their billions of nanodollars and just offer free unlimited online storage already. The longer they hold out the more chance people will migrate away from their photo ecosystem.

If they did this, it would have pushed/convinced (maybe just bought anyway) a Macbook Pro or Air for my wife instead of the cheaper PC laptop.

if Apple said everything is backed up with no worries, bam, I'd even buy a new computer to activate it.

BUT, I understand that is not Apple's best interest. They know they will have a certain amount of people willing to pay for iCloud backups and in doing so, incurring a subscription fee. Apple and other companies LOVE, LOVE, LOVE subscriptions as it means they have an active customer and can easily plan the financials for the year(s)

I use crashplan as a whole Mac online backup. I think I got in for about $150 for 4 years - one machine, unlimited space. I could hook up an external to it and back that up as well.

Takes forever to backup, but I have a 750gb iMac fully backed up to CP and it does incrementals frequently.

Who knows if it will work when I need it to.

Checked it out this morning... It doesn't mount in Finder (Like Dropbox and Chrome) That to me is the biggest advantage of DB. Plus, I have 90% of my clients on there, so Amazon Cloud Drive did not work out for me. Too bad. Great price.

But, they did away with the 5GB for free. If it's just photos, I get 1TB from Flickr for free. They're iOS app uploads from your camera roll when in WiFi, but the desktop app doesn't work on 10.3 betas, with Photos. It worked great with iPhotos so I assume it'll kick in again when 10.3 is released to the general public.

Flickr offers 1TB of free photo storage, and the autosync feature of the app works...well enough (for a very large amount of free photo storage). Why not just make a private account and offload all pics and videos to Flickr?

I would love to have unlimited iCloud storage, but Copy does just fine for now. I won't pay for cloud storage until it's fully integrated with iOS, at least, as long as there are free options out there.

Wasn't "unlimited" what brought Bitcasa to its knees?

It will be interesting to see what the acceptable limit of "unlimited" will be once more and more data gets uploaded over time...

This unlimited Amazon thing is great, but their sharing and social integration seems to be very lacking. I just logged in and cannot seem to share more than 1 pic file at a time and also cannot share a folder. Wtf??
