They actually quoted Gizmodo!!! I can't wait until next year for the next Fire and Nexus 7. We know that Amazon is not backing down from a fight.

Even if they're true facts....question is, why do they actually have to define their product by comparing it, i.e. pointing out how much better it is? Isn't it good enough to be bought just for the sake of being good enough?

Has a bitter taste in my opinion.

I don't care much for the Kindle Fire myself, but nothing wrong with some competition.

Pretty crappy list though, most of the items are essentially about the number of pixels on the screen.

But what I don't understand, and they seemed to go on about it at their last even, is the fast wifi. If it's all internet based content who cares if you're connected to wifi at 300mbps or 450mbps or whatever it is?

Ummmm and Phil Schiller didnt compare the Mini to the Nexus 7????????

Strange that they emphasize the wifi and the stereo speakers in that ad. Stereo speakers 2 inches apart aren't any better than stereo speakers in the same enclosure, and no one's tested the wifi performance of the mini (and indeed they can't even speak to any point of comparison and just left it blank), so it's a bit presumptuous.

CPU/GPU performance is worse, flash storage performance is worse, app selection is worse, the display is smaller and more than likely doesn't measure up in other ways.

Would have been much more effective to play up the price and resolution and leave it at that, because it looks like they're just trying to flesh out a list. I've got one and I enjoy it, but if I had to do it again, I'd get a Nexus 7 instead because of OS performance issues.

But its not open? *rolls eyes* now all of the sudden Amazon is doing it amd everyone is ok.

If i go android its stock android.

I have greatly enjoyed both my Mac & my iPad, having said that though I must also say that my son's Kindle Fire HD is a pretty nifty device even running the stock OS. The screen is lovely & I was pretty surprised at how good the sound is.

Loving Apple products shouldn't automatically be translated to mean that every other product out there is garbage.

They could have quoted just about any reputable site to point out the obvious negatives regarding the Mini.

Same reason Apple did it during their conference. Fear.

I'm currently typing this on a Fire HD. Sold my ipad 3 in anticipation of the new products. After rooting this and adding the Google Play store, it really is a good little tablet. Apps continue to be a problem though. As mentioned in the keynote, most apps are still built for a phone, not tablet.

And they can talk about PPI, but the Fire still doesn't compare to the retina display, you can still see pixels. Its closer to the ipad 2 pixelation than the 3, so i doubt this will be clearly superior to the mini.

For 199 though, its fantastic. I have a mini coming, but that doesn't mean i will be keeping it.

Amazon. Where is 4.0 on the original Kindle Fire? It's stuck on 2.3.

Will the kindle HD see jellybean? Or key lime lie?

A lot of companies run comparison campaign especially on price. Supermarkets in the UK do it allllll the time.

A lot of people are going to assume the Apple one is better, so I don't blame Amazon for using cold hard facts to show consumers the differences.

Its nothing new in the world of marketing, and frankly if it makes companies up there game, then I am all for it.

Competition = Good.

As for number of apps available, Google may actually overtake Apple in that area soon. They were "within striking distance" a month ago.

Do they have a break down of tablet specific apps? That's been [one of] my issues with Android tablets, the lack of really good tablet-specific apps - some of the iPad apps (vs. their iPhone counterpart) are outstanding designs and really capitalize on the screen real estate to optimize the user experience.

Amazon could have brought up the whole Maps fiasco but didn't...

Because the Kindle Fire HD has superior turn by turn navigation to the iPhone 5? And actually, Apple Maps are pretty great for being a brand new thing. At least where I live, every bit as good as Google's turn by turn on my Galaxy Nexus.

If they were the first to make a Maps app and it was as lousy as it is, I'd cut them some slack. They're last to the party and they're the worst at the party, which is what makes it so bad.

Actually, Apple Maps already got me lost once so I'd rather not have any than to have that crap...

Its an interesting marketing ploy but I do love the iPad mini's looks over the the kindle fire :)

So we care about HD resolution on a 7" display? Really? Put a movie on each and hold it away from your face at a normal distance and tell me they won't look "close enough". I mean c'mon...the iPad mini isn't going to look like a TV from the 80's.

Can the Kindle HD Airplay 1080p to my 46" HDTV? Because my iPad mini can.

Amazon is doing the only thing they can....reverting to what the PC industry has done for years.....display raw specs and numbers, regardless of whether the average person really cares.

LOVE the Gizmodo quote on the Amazon home page. LOL. Going for the jugular.

Lets be honest, Apple needed to create some space between the iPad and the iPad mini, in order to avoid cannibalizing sales of the iPad. It decided to rely on the fanaticism of its customers (as evidenced by the "defend it to the death" attitude on this thread), and decided to use a screen that is obsolete (for multiple generations now on its iPad and iPhone). And it charged more than its competition for the now obsolete product.

Very smart business decision, as long as you have the luxury of dealing with fanatic customers that will buy the product regardless of its major compromises.
