If Apple users have learned anything, it is the integration of hardware AND software that makes for a good user experience. The software on the first Fire was crap. For this to succeed, long term, there needs to be a significant improvement on that end as the hardware specs and data possibilities only give you joy until you start using a product with crappy software.

The only one I'm interested is the paperwhite, and it's the last to become available. :(

better Wi-Fi thanks to dual antennas and dual band 2.4GHz and 5GHz band support. MIMO will be a key component of the Kindle Fire HD. This combination will purportedly give the Fire HD 21 percent faster Wi-Fi than the iPad.
Apple has talked about MIMO in the past as well as 802.11ac. I hope.

Apple and Amazon are somewhat exclusive ecosystems, but nearly all devices have access to "most" of the others' content.

Rocketman

Amazon needs to get into the cellular phone business. They seem to push for innovation more than the others.

I love amazon. I shop a lot with them. I doubt I'd get their tablet though. Looks nice. But my iPad 2 is still doing fine.

Apple will need more than it's name and reputation moving forward. It's great that there's competition and that will mean great products for everyone/anyone's use case

Amazon is the real iPad competitor in Tablet market

Other vendors only make hardware and cannot afford to losing money on the hardware. But Amazon is different. Content is the key!

We need to wait for the iPad "Mini" to really see all the players. But good job by Amazon.

It is easy enough to see how Apple could counter this.

iPad Mini
16GB $249
32GB $349
64GB $449

iPad Mini with LTE
16GB $349
32GB $449
64GB $549

And of course next year

iPad 4
16GB $399
32GB $499
64GB $599
128GB $699

iPad 4 with LTE
16GB $499
32GB $599
64GB $699
128GB $799

That seems reasonable.

Interesting that Amazon Instant Video can work on an iPad. I'm pretty sure Apple's content doesn't work on the Fire...

I honestly believe, that Apple will release a $229, 16 GB iPad Mini. It makes no sense for them to do it much more expensive. It will carry the iPad 2 specs, most likely, and camera's that already beat competition. The Price Point is the main objective in the view of many people.

On a second note, 8.9 inches, seems really dumb. The iPad and its real competitors are at 10" or more. It is an odd place to be.

I have an iPad but...

I hardly do any reading on the retina display, I do most of my reading on my Kindle 3 (keyboard). I am due for an upgrade.

I can't wait for the Whitepaper Kindle! That's amazing!

Indeed. A nice "perk"/selling point is the $50 a year with $10 in credit, 250mb of LTE service, etc.

I think amazon just stole the tablet market.

The problem is Amazon is just as closed that the Apple Market. I've know a couple people buy them thinking they were getting Android only to take them back when they realised that Amazon has to approve all Apps meaning that many of the popular ones are not supported

I can't believe Amazon hasn't updated their site with pre-order info. Missed opportunity much?

Forget about the tablet itself, the $49 per YEAR data plan for 250mb monthly is amazing. Granted, its only 250mb but AT&T currently charges $15 a month for that pittance.

I hope these lower prices find their way to the iPad. I'm not going to be happy to pay a premium on the same LTE service just for the privilege of already paying more for an iPad.
