It still comes down to software and the Kindle Fire UI is a piss poor performer. Funny the did not mention other data plans. You might have to pay $50 once you go over the limits like other prepaid data plans which would be horrible.

Or not. And even if you had to pay regular rack rates for data - the initial "buy in is better than anything else out there.

Amazing that some people can't give Amazon credit where it's due. But I suppose it's one of those damned if they do, damned if they don't type of situations with some posters here.

Do you really think Apple is going to have an Retina iPhone and a Retina iPad and then release the mini with a sh-t display?

Really? Have you not seen what Apple has released the last year with the iPad and MBPro?

A RESOUNDING YES, lol. Apple will release a new ipad mini with the rehashed 1024x768 resolution. Why? Because it's the way apple does business. It's all about the $ nowadays.

The truth hurts, my friend!

I'm really interested in the 4G LTE Fire. I think for $50 a year that's a solid deal. I use my current Kindle Fire everyday. I do love my iPad but I also love the Amazon ecosystem and it offers me more than the iOS.

If it has a retina display, they are going to be charging $399 for it, and not a penny less.

They aren't going to sell a retina ipad for $299 and a non-retina for $399. Doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Indeed. Also, a retina display in iPad "Mini" will require the massive A5X (or an equivalent) chip and an equally massive battery. I have a hard time believing the likes of A5X and iPad 3-sized battery will even come close to fitting in the smaller iPad "Mini" chassis.

Too late. I'd rather buy a Nexus 7 than a Kindle Fire HD. Ultimately though, i'm waiting for the iPad mini.

Are you still pretending you know what the iPad Mini has as a display?

At least my argument is bound in fact. What's your's based on?

I do not need to pretend. I do know what the resolution is going to be - same as the current (non-retina) iPad. If it was different we'd know by now. Then of course Apple now might need to go back to the drawing board and redesign iPad mini :D

Well yeah, it's bigger, I hope it has a better screen and processor! I want it to be more that just a larger Fire? The way Apple updates products to DO something NEW?
Read the specs... it is the first tablet to offer dual WiFi antennas with MIMO.
Uses the new TI OMAP 4 cpu, which is faster than the Tegra 3.
It's also running a custom build of Android 4 (ICS), so the graphics issues are a thing of the past.

Waiting for the full hands on revue from The Verge.
Their first impression are positive.

Agreed and they posted rare stats where they say the Kindle Fire has 22% of the tablet market.

What did they put in the Flux Capacitor or something? Did I miss something Earth shattering?

What I saw was a lot of low priced shovel ware. Every Kindle Fire owner I know thinks it sucks. When it came out it had good specs as well.

Fool me once....

10 band LTE chip is impressive.
MIMO wifi

If Apple users have learned anything, it is the integration of hardware AND software that makes for a good user experience. The software on the first Fire was crap. For this to succeed, long term, there needs to be a significant improvement on that end as the hardware specs and data possibilities only give you joy until you start using a product with crappy software.

What is integrated hardware AND software supposed to mean, really? You do know that when people talk about vertical integration, they talk about the layer stack being integrated and nothing else - right?

That said, i am sure it sucked. Bezos should've went to MSFT. The days of solitary platforms are over. Interconnection is the future.

If you look closely, the claim amazon made about iPad 3's fastest wifi speed being 22 Mbps was totally false; I've ran a few speed tests on my iPad 3 in the past, most of them were at 30 Mbps.

Too late. I'd rather buy a Nexus 7 than a Kindle Fire HD. Ultimately though, i'm waiting for the iPad mini.

Why wait... These amazing specs and low price point begs the question of what kind of person will still see value in purchasing a mini?!

Some people here are nuts. Amazon is offering magic at such a low price point and people are dismissing it.

This could cause apple to drop the iPads price big time since it shows good tech can be had at a much lower price point.

Regarding the iPad Mini screen, is has to be 1024x768. Why? Because of app compatibility. Just as with the iPhone 4 and the iPad 3, where Apple was forced to use the quadruple resolutions to keep apps compatible, they have to use the old iPad resolution for the Mini.

Or is someone seriously suggesting they will release a Mini where no current apps will run, or that they will use non-native resolution resampling, so that all apps look like crap? C'mon...

So, Apple does NEW and Amazon does not. Then how come Fire HD is as good as iPad (even better if the data plan is taken into consideration)?

Cheaper =/= Better. One of my favorite quotes: Good things cost good money! :D

And there's no way a Fire HD could hold a candle to my iPad. Why? THE APPS. My iPad is so much more useful, in the classroom, at work (Citrix is supposedly sluggish on Fire), for photography (screen advantage: iPad), then the Fire could hope to be (for now), even with a data plan.

Where's the innovation? Where's the evident design savvy? Where's the sexy style?

Oh, wait. Wrong company.

I think the design of the Kindle Fire is quite nice actually. And hey - they haven't had a lawsuit from Apple yet - so love or hate them - respect that they made their own design choices.

Apple will need more than it's name and reputation moving forward. It's great that there's competition and that will mean great products for everyone/anyone's use case

Trouble with living on a name is that once it goes out of style, the upwards slope is a killer. Even if you bring your products back to par, you will still remain the has-been.

iPad Mini will look weak if it only has 1024x768 display resolution.

"but details on differences from the 8.9-inch model such as screen resolution are not yet clear"

The 8.9 inch Kindle Fire HD has the higher resolution. It states right in the article that the smaller Fire HD did not divulge their resolution. I doubt seriously that boh the 8.9 and 7 inch Fire tablets will sport the same higher resolution. I would bet that the 7 inch version is far closer to the 1024x768 you think the iPad Mini might...might...have.

10 band LTE chip is impressive.
MIMO wifi
Speakers

Those aren't Amazon innovations though. Anyone that buys the proper OMAP processor or Qualcomm parts will get that same "innovation'

MIMO Wifi ....rather have 802.11ac instead.

The word innovation is abused here. If you're buying off the shelf parts it's not your innovation its your OEMs.
