Are you kidding? Have you read about Foxconn workers (who manufacture iPhones) jumping to death from the roof of the factory?
I'm not defending Apple's treatment of their employees or contractors by any means, but this thing about Foxconn suicides has just gotta stop.

Does anyone realize that the suicide rate during the "suicide rash" was actually much lower at Foxconn than in China as a whole? Also, the Foxconn suicide rate was much lower than the suicide rate in the US.

The workers actually live at the Foxconn campuses so that's why it counted as a workplace suicide. If a guy that works at Comcast commits suicide at home, does it count as a Comcast suicide?

A more apt analogy would be comparing Foxconn suicides with that of major universities ... like say MIT, where the suicide rate is double of what the Foxconn rate was.

Amazon shares are $2000?! I swear they were like $10 and people complained Amazon didn't pay any dividends!

I don't get the market's infatuation with Amazon and their paper thin margins. Here is a little comparison via CNBC:

[Apple] generated a $48.35 billion profit during its fiscal 2017 and made $13.8 billion in net income during the March 2018 quarter, while Amazon's total net income since inception is about $9.6 billion.
Apple, made more profit in one quarter than Amazon has made...ever.

It's easy, you are worth what you are worth, not what you earned last year. That's because Amazon reinvested every damn penny for many years so they could expand. There's no way people stops buying in internet, and they are the biggest online retailer by far. They are one of the two main cloud service/computing business (other is Microsoft with Azure). And now they are getting into producing media content, and getting physical business.
On the other hand if Apple ****s up bad with iPhone (unlikely but possible) or happens to live the same situation Nokia lived years ago when they were the giant and got obliverated in a single year, they have nothing else to remain on top. Macs, iPads or accessories won't save them.

You're not using it don't kbow all the prime benefits which is why you think it's expensive.

I got rid of it because I realized I was wasting my money. Granted, it might be useful for a few folks, but most people I’ve spoken to agree that they don’t use all of its benefits enough to justify the cost.

In fact, prime users waste hundreds to thousands a year cos they tend to buy more from amazon to justify the cost of prime instead of shipping around. That’s how some people are making millions (literally) by buying from Walmart and selling on Amazon.

Based on my calculations, for the amount I overspent on Amazon and prime every year, I could have gotten Netflix, Apple Music and iCloud with money to spare.

It depends on what you buy and how often but the savings are hard to beat in certain cases. I often use AMAZON for the prime movies and tv shows. I also have student prime which lowers the cost. Grad school for the rest of my life here I come!

But I do shop around, but rarely do I find a deal thats better than ordering from them and getting 5% cash back on my credit card. Yes I do have to use the points on them. When buying kitchen gadgets and items if amazon has something cheaper I will usually go to bed bath and beyond where they will match it, I will use a 20% off coupon, and then use my amazon prime credit cards to get 1% back. For me, amazon has a lot of clothes from brands that I like that are cheaper.

For Prime, you're really paying for the convenience, which to you doesn't outweigh your spending.

I personally love having Prime Pantry and the 2 day shipping, but I also am not careless about my spending. I share it with my household and my parents, so it's really convenient for all of us. If people can't manage their finances somewhat, then yeah they should reconsider what they use Prime for.

I don't know about low market valuation for Apple...

Amazon has much more diversity, and a stronger position. A portfolio of selling millions of types of products, the Sam Walton approach with a new delivery system.

Everything Apple has, and growth, is HUGELY dependent on one product, iPhone. Can continue to make them, or break them.
The difference is Apple actually makes almost 1.5 times more profit in a quarter than Amazon has made since they were founded. And that does not take into acount the billions in red ink before the ever made a profit at all.

Cook doesn’t need to rule the world, he Rules the worlds richest company and is doing a stellar job. As for Amazon, they have grown exponentially, especially with the amount of services offered. Amazon is a huge entity, and their success is indicative of Prime services and other programs offered.
Why rule the the world when you can rule the profit. I Apple has been paying back more to shareholders each year than Amazon has made in profits total.

And Bezos probably has about 10% of that value
78.8 million shares, or roughly 16.1%, worth about $160 billion.
Wow, Amazon's share prices are $2000 compared to Apple's $200? That's surprising.
That said, Amazon haven't had a stock split, though even with that in account it's still a huge difference. It just shows how comparatively low Apple's market valuation is.
Correction: Amazon has had stock splits.
Apple has had several stock splits in their history. If Apple never had one, they’d be above $2000/share also
Apple has had 4 stock splits in their history: a 7-for-1 split and three 2-for-1 splits.
Without these splits, Apple's closing price today would have been 12,788.16 instead of the current 228.36.

Amazon has had 3 stock splits in their history: a 3-for-1 split and two 2-for-1 splits.
Without these splits, Amazon's closing price today would have been 24,474.12 instead of the current 2,039.51.

Still, stock price is a poor indicator of the true value of the company, since stock price is so heavily influenced by emotions and factors beyond business fundamentals. As already stated, Apple is currently far more profitable than Amazon, but that could change at some point in the future. Both companies have done well for themselves, especially considering how many companies fail.

Amazon made this much by exploiting workers and sacrificing workplace safety and sanitation whereas Apple achieved it first while treating both employees and customers well.

Please I hope you are just joking.

It's simple supply vs. demand.

Apple has 4,829,926,000 shares available for sale. or 4,829,926,000 x $228.36(closing price today) =$1,102,961,901,360

Amazon has 487,741,000 shares available for sale. or 487,741,000 x $2039.51(closing price today) =$994,752,646,910

There are just less shares available from Amazon than Apple, so they demand a higher price per share. And they are both worth exactly what their stock price are traded at and are an exact indicator of what a company is worth because it's exactly what people paid for that company today. Tomorrow may change and it can be extremely volatile.

Just using Amazon subscribe and save more than covers the cost of prime membership. Save 15 percent on I think it's 3 or more items or 5 or more. Spend 1000 on consumables a year on Amazon and that alone saves you more than what prime cost. Then you factor in everything else.

Actually, Chinese oil company was the first (though not for long) a while back. Apple was second (but the first US) company to reach $1 trillion.

Foxconn is not owned by Apple and Apple most likely was conned by Foxconn executives into believing that employees were treated well since Apple clearly would not want their devices regarded the same as blood diamonds. Also the company that that mistreats Amazon employees is Amazon and therefore Amazon is directly responsible for the abuses that occur in Amazon operated facilities. Amazon warehouses have several fatalities within the past several ears as well.

Are you implying Apple didn't know about Chinese labor hardships? Hilarious

That bezos guy that grew his local book store into a trillion dollar company that has completely changed our lifestyle.

yeah, not ugh at all.

He is a really aweful person and if I could I would not use Amazon. Sadly that is nearly impossible since they have no competion.

Amazon has a narrative that’s easy for Wall Street to buy into - they want to own all of retail shopping. People like a story where you upend the current world order and replace it with your own.

Amazon doesn't just want to own all of retail shopping. They want to be in every household's daily lifestyle including ordering food (see Prime Now), buying groceries (see Whole Foods), and watching movies/tv (see Amazon Video).

As usual, no one ever mentions their cloud presence. The combination of their cloud technologies with retail is what makes them a powerhouse. If it weren't for their cloud business, their retail would not be as successful as it is today.

I dont know what the heck you are buying but prime has beaten every price over brick and motor stores for me.

I used to have Walmart price match prime and they actually just stopped price matching Amazon.

Amazon prime isn’t always cheaper here in Singapore, but I use them primarily for delivering bulky household items to my home. It’s really the convenience that won me over at the end of the day.

Amazon is a better long term investment than Apple and comparable to Google. For one, Jeff Bezos is much smarter than Tim Cook. Also, Amazon products and services portfolio is diverse targeting both consumers and businesses. Not only do they have the largest internet store, their consumer products such as tablets, media streamers, home assistants, etc. are dominating the market and they're also top notch in cross platform media streaming service and AWS cloud-as-a-service.

Congrats Amazon! Amazing to think that just two us companies are worth more than the GDP of several nations.

The stock is overpriced at this point just like prime. $120 up front for “free” shipping is highway robbery now that most other retailers offer real free shipping. Walmart is generally cheaper to boot.

And prime video and their paltry music service is definitely not worth $10/month.

‘TANSTAAFL’ There is no free shipping the customer pays for it either included in the price of the item or as a separate line on the invoice.
