So is this a gaming device too or just a streaming media player?

The Microphone in the fire tv remote is pretty cool. Apple TV requires a phone or ipad to be a keyboard if you don't want to use the remote. I LIKE this about the Fire TV. The kid time thing is REALLY AWESOME too for my daughter.

However, all his comments about 'hard to get pictures on your tv' might be right about Google or Roku, but it's brain dead easy on an Apple TV - EXACTLY the same as on the Fire TV. Take a picture, and it's right there on the Fire TV / Apple TV via the cloud.

I think this has decent potential. Some of these things are things Apple "should" have played with or implemented a while back.

Apple already has lots of similar things going and in the looks but just never brought it to their "hobby" the AppleTV

Sounds interesting. Is it too much to hope that it could play content from iTunes? :p

Right. Where do you have to buy your music? From Amazon to be able to play it on the Fire TV?

Looks like just another closed ecosystem to me.

Just like 'Free Time' - it's $2.99 a month if you have an Amazon Prime Membership. Is it $2.99 for Apple TV owners or Roku owners or Google owners? No. This is a CLOSED ECOSYSTEM product. I hate how companies lie about what they are doing. Be honest, I'm okay with it - but don't lie to grab all the anti-Apple sheep to your door.

Plex

If Plex can be installed, I might be interested in this. Streaming from my media server is THE feature necessary. Couldn't care less about Amazon Prime.

Welcome to the game nice and late, Amazon. Way to innovate.

Wait so Microsoft Build keynote is at the same time as this product announcement?

I can see this being big with the Amazonians/Prime Members. Guessing price will be between $35-55. basically do "outshine" the AppleTV in power and price.

With that kind of hardware, there is no way the price will be that low. I'm guessing $99, like the Apple TV.

I have no interest in this whatsoever. Apple TV is already connected to the world's biggest entertainment store with all the movies, tv shows and entertainment you could ever wish to consume.

I bet the Amazon box will have noisy fans and a terrible user interface. It's DOA.

probably. i was just betting on Amazon doing the one-up thing. to say it is the same price as the AppleTV with better stuff...good to great.
to say it is all that and LOWER price would be great to awesome.

This seems like a KindleFire accessory. :p;)

No it's not. It's a good device just like the Apple TV. The Fire TV can do games right now and has voice on it's remote right now. Apple TV will have it soon too. They're both very similar.

They're also both closed ecosystems in their own way. Just like choosing Sony Playstation vs Microsoft XBox, Amazon wants the choice to be them vs. Apple TV/Roku/Google.

As long as Amazon prices it at $99 - they'll be in the game. Price this at $199 and it will be DOA.

Looks like the way they're going with pricing it will be something like $99 if you have an Amazon Prime Account and $199 without. We'll see....

Yep. Microsoft is pretty good at being second fiddle. They've really got to get their act together.

Makes no sense. This morning all CNBC was talking about was Amazon's STB. Stupid Microsoft.

ok the Fire Game Controller is $40.

I guess this will be near the AppleTV in price.

Amazon totally beat Apple to the punch on this one. This is exactly what I have been waiting for the Apple TV to become.

If I wasn't so thoroughly invested in the Apple ecosystem, I'd definitely choose this over the current-gen ATV. Apple really needs to step up, fast.

Agreed. this is along the lines of what I thought the AppleTV should have been years back When I got my first iPhone and then iPad and heard of Siri.

Granted Apple has down some good stuff but had they kept with the AppleTV they could have been the first ones.

I agree completely.

Apple had such a big chance to be FIRST and grab market share, but they just love to take their time.

Maybe they have much grander ideas for the Apple TV? Just like they do for the iWatch? Time will tell, but it seems Apple should be moving FASTER.
