amazon doesn't need to make it with a dual core A9, GPU, etc. they need to make it fast enough to read books, play the crappy games that litter all the app stores and watch movies at a 720p resolution

people on this site should know that paper specs don't make a product a hit

i see A LOT of them every day. people buy them to read books. the new one will be just a cherry topping from the core feature of reading books you buy from amazon. i see more people reading books than playing games on the train to/from work

Thats my original point. If they can come up with a way to produce it and make money for $250 they have a homerun. Its just that its yet to be done. I hope they do it. It will drive down costs for other options.

"...But Amazon's ability to integrate its extensive content offerings with a low-cost tablet device has sparked renewed speculation that Apple may finally face a strong challenge in the tablet market."

I had to chuckle when I read this. I hope it's true, but I will believe it when I see it.

Barnes & Noble doesnt even come close to having the reach that Amazon does so comparing the Nook to this isn't really fair

They're a great online store with a huge selection. Beyond that there's not much to go nuts over.

Wrong.

True.. they ARE a great online store with a huge selection...

But,

They also have Apps , Books , AWS service, cloud storage, and a bunch of other stuff I bet you didn't know about.

Hell, I don't even know half the stuff they do but I had a really cool conversation with a resource development agent for Amazon and this thing is going to be big.

Only a fool would come to the table with less to offer at this point.
That strategy has proven fatal and I think everyone knows how formidable Apple is at this point.

And one thing history has shown is that Amazon is no Fool ! ! !

I am going to go ahead and assume this tablet is not planned to compete to directly with the iPad. It is, however going to put a serious hurt on the Nook Color. It will essentially be the same thing (a custom android build with an emphasis on reading) except that unlike the Nook Color, this will have Amazons awesome music, movies, and app store to back it up.

This is the direction an Android tablet maker needed to go in order to make a successful tablet.

A few thoughts...

I have yet to see anything from amazon point that this is an "iPad" competitor. I only see analysts saying that. This is just a low end entry point tablet, just like all the other BUT the store integration is a step from apples playbook, no pun intended. I only see this being, for people who are cheap they'll buy this, but then again, they wouldn't buy the iPad anyways, so amazon is trying to take out the low end share to leave it between Apple and Amazon. One thing personally I think is a fail is the 7". I can't stand these small "tablets". Frick'n A, samsung and others made fun of apple for having a "large iPod touch" (3.5" to 10") when they have 4.2" phones and 7" tablets, 3" difference vs. 6.5" difference from iPhone to iPad. Who's the idiot swallowing their own crap they dished out earlier? Anyways, I see it selling decently for those who love kindle but want something a little more, this is it. For those of us techies out there, this might serve the purpose for some, but a poll from large consumer base, I think most want iPad. Why? To replace the laptop they use to surf and email. I know that's all we used my wifes macbook for, so iPad replaced it. 2 iPhones, iPad, and iMac. Happy household here.

I'm assuming a color LCD display since it's announced as a tablet. So basically Amazon wants to compete with the iPad instead of trying to make a good color e-reader product.

Sorry, but it's not an iPad and it doesn't have a color e-ink display. I'll pass.

I wonder if this uses the Pixel QI technology we've been hearing so much about that no one seems to be using yet. Basically, e-ink display for reading books (which is superior to LCD for that particular function) and a full on LCD display for movies/apps.

Notion Ink Adam uses it but I think Amazon won't use it. So washed colors

We have the "best of both worlds" tech ;)

Well, it is the strong point of the Kindle. Of course, it depends what they're aiming this tablet at exactly.

If Amazon really does launch a tablet, Apple should kill the Kindle iOS apps immediately. Hit 'em where it hurts.

If they do, the anti-trust lawyers will get a lot of business, from both the government, Apple as well as the competitors. I hope Apple does not go that route. Instead, I want Amazon to release a Super-Kindle app that does all the things that you can do with a Kindle Tablet.

I do not think Amazon wants to be in the hardware business. They are a retailer and a vendor of streaming media and what they do would be about boosting all that. So, bundling all that interface in an iOS app would be a very reasonable thing to do. Apple should love it since it increases iOS device sales and Amazon should love it because they get their content sold.

Boom!

Couple days later, boom here comes the new iPad with retina display. Then everybody forgets what Amazon had just released. LOL!
This is good competition is healthy looking forward what Amazon might bring to the table. Hopefully a hybrid display for regular tablet and book reader, I'm sold!

Obviously the Amazon tablet is coming out. But who cares?

Well, Amazon's kind of a big deal. They've sold millions of Kindles (which *is* an iPad competitor in some ways).

Barnes & Noble's tablet has been pretty darn successful as well (they've sold millions). My friend and I both have a Nook Color. People have been waiting to see what Amazon has up their sleeves for months now. They've been slow to fight Apple, and B&N even 1-upped them by bringing out a tablet first.

It's an interesting race. Lots of people care.

the amazon arrow looks like a penis........

WTF?

It's a grinning (almost smirking) mouth, and you see a penis?

Well, I have a Kindle and I really enjoy it for reading, as well as its hidden killer feature, the "experimental" browser that lets you surf on 3G, anywhere, for free.

Obviously it's not a very great browser (no color, etc.) but it does the job and free is hard to argue with. I live in Canada, and whenever I visit the US (or any other country for that matter), I have to remember to turn my iPhone data OFF or risk facing HUGE data roaming charges. Now that I have the Kindle, I can access the web for basic things from the US and Europe, etc.

I owned an iPad, loved it to bits but simply didn't need to keep both an iPhone and an iPad. But some days I wish I had a 7" tablet to augment the iPhone. This might well fit the bill, we'll see...

It's not free...you have to buy a truly cripple and inferior product, and actually use it. I don't consider that free.

Amazon may even take a loss on the devices kind of how console companies do if it can keep you locked into their ecosystem, so it doesn't have to be a cheap tablet, we shall see

I hope they didnt change the interface to coverflow to avoid getting sued because apple owns a patent on the coverflow interface as well. they may get sued for that btw. apple will protect its property and that itunes coverflow was specifically bought and patented by apple

The *only* value-added advantage of an Amazon tablet would be the ability to stream Amazon Prime video content. If you can't do that on this tablet, it's really worthless.

I'm 100% certain that there is a market for what Amazon comes out with...a cheap, barely usable tablet that connects to (what passes for) Amazon's "ecosystem" of mp3 buyers and book readers.

It's a small, small market. About the size of the Kindle market. 3-4 million over the next 5 years. Hardly a speed bump to Apple's market share.
