If they do, the anti-trust lawyers will get a lot of business, from both the government, Apple as well as the competitors. I hope Apple does not go that route. Instead, I want Amazon to release a Super-Kindle app that does all the things that you can do with a Kindle Tablet.

I do not think Amazon wants to be in the hardware business. They are a retailer and a vendor of streaming media and what they do would be about boosting all that. So, bundling all that interface in an iOS app would be a very reasonable thing to do. Apple should love it since it increases iOS device sales and Amazon should love it because they get their content sold.

Since Apple has a store that directly competes with Amazon - I doubt Apple will want such an app anymore than Amazon will want to pay 30% of their sales. They had to remove their store button from their current app. Not to say they wouldn't just do the same for some killer app.

Honestly, I expect something like the Nook Color. But the thing is if they want to call this a tablet, I am in for the price. Apple has set the price and it seems others are dumb enough to think that their tablet should cost that much (ie RIM).

I find tablets a ripoff at $$400-500 compared to actual laptops that can do more. They are mostly useless toys. They can be useful briefly reading a newspaper or magazines and if you travel alot. And the apps and better portability compared to a laptop is nice. But the difference between a cell phone vs tablet when it comes to usefulness is much smaller than a cell phone vs laptop.

What I want Amazon to do is to see them succeed at that level so others can follow suit that price does matter to the masses as seen with the TouchPad selling out. If they can sell it for $250 and do well, others will take a hint and start slashing $200 on their tablets that do nothing but collect dust in retail stores. Android OEM's are not going to beat Apple when it comes to premium pricing. Not happening. Most tablets should really cost under $250 since all they do is a half-ass job on what $500 laptop computers can do. People are getting ripped off paying 64GB when I can get a laptop at the same price with a faster CPU, bigger screen, 500GB hard drive, and more functionality for work or school.

how is this apple related?

I swear! There's one of you in every thread. :p

I'm pretty sure you can solve this conundrum if you put half your mind to it.

I'm 100% certain that there is a market for what Amazon comes out with...a cheap, barely usable tablet that connects to (what passes for) Amazon's "ecosystem" of mp3 buyers and book readers.

It's a small, small market. About the size of the Kindle market. 3-4 million over the next 5 years. Hardly a speed bump to Apple's market share.

You're forgetting the Amazon Prime video library.

I buy body wash on Amazon, not much else...

Well if you found body wash, there must be something else on there that you can use.

Wrong.

True.. they ARE a great online store with a huge selection...

But,

They also have Apps , Books , AWS service, cloud storage, and a bunch of other stuff I bet you didn't know about.

Hell, I don't even know half the stuff they do but I had a really cool conversation with a resource development agent for Amazon and this thing is going to be big.

Only a fool would come to the table with less to offer at this point.
That strategy has proven fatal and I think everyone knows how formidable Apple is at this point.

And one thing history has shown is that Amazon is no Fool ! ! !

Excellent post, and I could not agree more. I will add:

Look out netflix or wachtnow/quickflix/ whatever they just renamed there service. Remember, Amazon never even got record labels blessing before the streaming service they opened.

Email.
Dropbox competitor

on and on.

I see this being a viable player in the market. I really respect Amazon as a company, and they have always done right by me as a consumer. I'd dump netfix in a NY second: Why? oh because when I have problems they give me 10% off my 7.99 bill, and insult me.

Good luck Amazon, I am not expecting a iPad killer but this will be a winner.
Anyone disagrees, look how big of a bomb the kindle was/is:rolleyes:

At $250 and with all of Amazon's content pushing it, I think this has a real chance to compete with the iPad. (Assuming it doesn't suck.)

Hope Amazon doesn't pull the Kindle app from iOS, though, to push people toward their tablet... Come to think of it, it might work on me if they did that.

I'd love to see someone take a bit of shine off Apple's... apple. Do 'em good to make them sweat a bit.

Shady?

Google it... they have a partnership with Sprint to provide 3G service.

OOOOOOOhhhh shady. Not biased are we?

I'll add that I think that if Amazon offers email service on this device that it could very well be strong competition for the iPad.

Not everyone wants/needs the iPad at 499 as an entry point. But there are plenty of people who would love to have one device for reading, media and email (who don't need all the bells and whistles) at $250 (if true).
I was asking the question about where the "free" service came from, not making a value statement (I did explicitly state that I did not know, I'm just suspicious any time someone claims to have found a "free" way to get a service or product that is normally paid for). And I did mention in my previous posts that I think that this is the device that might finally make Apple budge on its iPad pricing, which would be great for consumers. I'm not biased, just curious.

Anyway, thanks for enlightening me, I appreciate it!

As long as the device has decent specs and isn't locked down to Amazon only approved content, I imagine it will be hugely successful. If it is comparable with the iPad and only $249, Amazon are basically subsidizing it, so people will buy content from them. If I couldn't afford $500 for an iPad, I'd accept a subsidy from Amazon.

NYC the kindle to ipad ratio seems to be at least 100 to 1 if not higher. if i didn't have kids and didn't need my ipad for educational apps i'd buy it since most of what i use my ipad for is reading.

kindle is cheaper
it meets the steve jobs fetish test of thin and long battery
it does what it's built to do just right
a lot more free books in the kindle store than the apple store. along with cheaper prices

there are not even in the same category, kindle its an electronic book reader and thats all!,
iPad its a tablet device with multiple functions to the normal user.

It's not free...you have to buy a truly cripple and inferior product, and actually use it. I don't consider that free.

Which inferior and crippled product are you talking about ? Every Kindle e-Reader sold with 3G access has free access to the network download books. No other purchases are required.

I was asking the question about where the "free" service came from, not making a value statement (I did explicitly state that I did not know, or did you not actually read the post you quoted). Thanks for enlightening me, I appreciate it!

Well, to be fair, you did jump straight to hinting to shady practices and illegally piggy backing. ;)

I'd love to see someone take a bit of shine off Apple's... apple. Do 'em good to make them sweat a bit.

Apple doesn't roll that way. They are the most self-motivated company ever. They play by their own rules, their own aesthetics, their own values. There is no "competition" per se with Apple. Never really was. They are only competing with their own sense of perfectionism in everything.

unless you play games the ipad 2 is overkill for most tablet tasks

books, lite email, lite gaming, lite internet and at a low price the new kindle will probably be a huge seller as well

maybe an HDMI port to get access to most TV's in the US to push their streaming service. but there are rumors that Amazon is going to buy netflix

I hope they release a new Kindle. I've been meaning to get one of those. LCD tablets just aren't meant for extended reading.

they don't lose money per device. they build them cheap enough to make a profit on them

Is that true for the kindle, and do we know that will be the case for this device as well? That's the big thing I'm wondering, are they able to make a profit on this device (and if so, where are they finding the cost savings - it means they're cutting corners somewhere)? Or is the plan to make it a loss leader to get some market share and user base? That could work if most users end up buying tons of Amazon content but not with users who mostly use free/pirated content and apps.

funny how people are crapping on Amazon, the biggest online retailer on the planet.

don't underestimate Jeff Bezos. Thats all im sayin.

any good competition is welcome. The only way to be really gain on Apple is great material delivered easily otherwise it is crash and burn! It happened in game console market and it will happen again in tablet market! Good luck amazon! Now when is Apple going to have an announcement!!! :D

Um, how is this NOT Apple-related?

how is this apple related?

It has everything to do with Apple. The timing, the cost. At this price, it will either be a piece of crap (probably not) or it will be subsidized heavily by Amazon's content. Much like Google giving Android away for "free" at the expense of other competitors (Microsoft and Apple) because they can afford to. A win for consumers, yes, but pretty devastating to competition. Not that any Android tabs are destined for success any time soon, but with this, they'll get out of the game even faster than they already have. At which point, Google might as well release their own hardware tablet.
