I let my Prime membership expire in September because I won't pay $99 for a renewal...I wonder if I'll qualify for this deal? (Or is it for absolute first-time customers only?)

No thanks, Amazon prime is pretty much worthless, you're basically *paying* for an incentive to buy more from Amazon.

Nope. I'm paying for convenience just as I pay a premium for Apple products because they are usually better built and more intuitive to use. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon, yes, but never if I can get it net-net less somewhere else at the same speed. Plus the free video and music streaming is a nice bonus too.

In the past I have bought these, waited for my sub to expire, and then activated the "gift" a few days later. Of course maybe Amazon caught on to that practice, maybe they don't care, who knows.

Interesting... I thought I read an article not to long ago that Amazon said "Prime" was killing their profits? So now they lower the price? Interesting.

I loved the TG crew, warts and all. Can't wait to see the new show. The most surprising thing in this thread thus far is the number of people who don't already have Prime. Anecdotally, it would probably be much much easier for me find someone who has Prime than it would be for me to find someone who can take advantage of this offer. Above all else, Prime is about shipping advantages. The video, music, photo stuff is just ancillary bonuses imo.

Won't let me have it. I'm on the free months trial and therefore according to them an existing customer! Bad show Amazon! I will be ringing later!

Here come the complaints about the discount not being available to current members looking to renew.

The average Prime member spends 4x more with Amazon. Amazon now has more Prime members (over 63 million) than non-Prime members. You can see how getting people to sign up means big money for them.

"pretty much worthless" to you. You are *paying* for services, including but not limited to, free 2-day shipping and the Amazon Prime video library. Now, you can argue that it is not "free" 2-day shipping since you are paying a fee to have obtain that benefit, and I can buy that argument. However, for those of us that shop on Amazon often, for me at least 3 orders per week, Prime membership is about the best $99 I can spend per year.

While I have been a Prime subscriber for many years and will continue my membership for years to come, I find the fact that they are not offering the $20 discount for renewals a bit offensive. I just checked and I have placed 113 orders to date in 2016, on top of 135 in 2015. The $99 Prime cost is super-minimal to me. But at the same time, I would have appreciated that 1 day sale so that I could opt to early renew for 2017 (I believe my renewal is in February).

For those who don't know, one of the presenters was fired from the previous show after physically assaulting one of the producers. His tv persona is based on making racist and offensive comments.

I'm all for a bit of entertainment, but what Amazon are basically saying with this show is "As long as you make us money, you can say and do whatever you want in public."

He wasn't fired. They didn't renew the contracts. He still does work for the BBC.

Paying 79 bucks for watching top gear or watching it for free a couple of hours later. Hummm I think I'll do the later.

How would you watch it for free? Do you intend to steal it? Since when was theft acceptable?

There are still people without Amazon Prime!?!

Apple TV owners?

I have Prime but to be frank I could live without it. Prime video is pretty weak compared to Netflix, and whilst the quicker shipping is nice I'm rarely in much of a rush to get things.

I will watch The Grand Tour though, on my PS4 or Xbox One. If this show is a big hit it's going to make the childish feud between Apple and Amazon look even more pathetic than it already does. I mean come on guys, work it out. Prime Video is on every platform out there, except the Apple TV. So much for Cook being a good business guy, he's dropped the ball on this one in a big way.

I wish Amazon Prime was not worthless in Canada :( 2 day shipping is all you get here, plus unlimited photo storage

No prime video or music

This guy obviously needs a safe space. Please someone! QUICK! Get him a teddy bear to hold!!! Welcome to the mindset of corporations bud. If something sells, they don't care if it's baby Jesus being set on fire by a isis attacker wearing a all hail Satan shirt.

I think I'll send Amazon a big FU this is the exact reason why I cancelled Directv...charge me the full rate then when you are trying to acquire new customers at a discount. You may have forgotten about me, but trust me I still know what I pay.

My wife and I love Amazon prime. Have had it for years and buy a lot from Amazon. We probably cost them a ton of money with all the shipments. lol.

If 'The grand tour' is so good why haven't Amazon released the first episode to the critics?

Why take the risk? The show has had more than enough publicity. You can never be sure with critics - there's a danger that they might actually like it, which would be poison for a show featuring that bunch.

He wasn't fired, his contract was not renewed.

That's a distinction without a difference: before the incident there was every expectation that Mr Toad's contract would be renewed. The BBC didn't can the show, they hired new presenters (with questionable success). It was obvious to all but the deliberately contrarian that the incident was a major factor decision not to renew his contract. That's "contract not renewed" spelled F-I-R-E-D.

As to the preceding incidents and clashes with the BBC, its hard to know who was in on the gig - the team's non-PC double entendres were the show's unique selling point and it was making big money for the BBC. I think the real problem is that the joke was beginning to wear out, and they were cutting it nearer and nearer the knuckle to keep it alive. Clarkson assaulting a colleague just when his contract was up was probably a lucky break for the BBC (pity they went on to waste so much money on Evans).

As for Amazon Prime - if you make good use of the free delivery, the media offerings are a great bonus - but they're too limited to be worth it in their own right - certainly not a replacement for Netflix/Spotify etc. The other problem is that Prime Video is about the most limited streaming option in terms of device support (Do they have an Apple TV app yet?)

i absolutely loathe when companies do this for new customers. I've been loyal for YEARS. shoot me a discount. Amazon i do not appreciate this.

Last year they did something similar and a bunch of Amazon customers (including myself) let them have it and they honored the deal for us too. I plan to do the same this year and based on past customer service experience in the past, I expect they'll do it again.

Oh and no Apple TV made me quit prime a few month later ago

Based on the earlier article of Apple cutting the Apple TV fees in half, I think this will change very soon!

Jeremy Clarkson is a prejudiced a**. He is also clever, funny, and at least in some subjects, very knowledgeable. His contract was not renewed, and he was suspended for the remaining time on his contract, after punching a BBC producer after a 'producers challenge' day of filming that evidently was very stressful for all 3 of the on air personalities.

And for a non-sequiter to end this-his parents were responsible for making the first Paddington Bear, which people with kids may know about. http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2014/10/story-paddington-bear-jeremy-clarkson
