If Apple released the iPad 1 for $199 it would kill sales if the iPad 2.

Not if Apple released a 8GB Wi-Fi only iPad. It would be akin to the iPhone 3GS that exists along side the iPhone 4G. But in the end I don't think Apple would offer a low priced iPad because they told need to.

It will run a better os why would you Wang to run the "full" android is, whatever that means

This might be the first tablet that could give Apple a run for its money! All Apple needs to do is lower the price of the entry-level iPad by at least $100 :D

At $199, that is a gamechanger for what most tablets should cost in the future. I know TouchPad sold for $99-$149, but that was HP just getting out of the business. TP was being sold for far under its market value even when it cost about $300 to make. A fire sale (liquidation) is totally different than a company still wanting to be in the business and selling it at a competitive price. Let's get this out of our heads. TouchPads for $99 is long gone and you now will see $200-$250. You can't expect $99 anymore. And even if you are lucky to get one later in October with the additional 200K being made, they will be gone by the time the website finishes to load. Expect hoarder prices in most cases. It is a DEAD platform. Even in a year, webOS will be gone. Whatever the webOS dev community will say, it is only a matter of time. And who knows if RIM will cease to exist at all in a few years since they are sinking too.

What Amazon is doing here is selling it at a loss in hardware and recouping it all in software and content similar to what Sony and Microsoft did with PlayStation and Xbox. They are doing us a favor at first bat by losing money if you buy one of these. This first gen isn't for tech geeks who need the latest specs or hundred thousand apps. This is for budget-conscious people who doesn't need all the complications and apps that geeks want. The timing is right and the price is right, so why not go for it? Other than iDevices, what is out there for people to get that looks very enticing this Holiday season? 3DS is for $180? Nah. Apple has already taken a bite on casual portable gaming. Vita is only out in Japan this Dec. Another Android tablet like the Xoom or Jetstream? LOL at the prices. This is why tablets can be so overpriced. And Apple looks to discontinue to iPod classic and shuffle. The iPod touch doesn't look to get a major refresh this year. It is either iDevices or Amazon. And we know Black Friday is going to be brutal for some of their discount prices on video game systems, HDTV's, and whatnot. Shopping at the comfort of your own home sounds better.

My plan -

-Wait for RIM to drop prices to $199 on the 16GB PlayBook WITHOUT rebates and get it. I always preferred a 7-inch screen tablet. Anything bigger is just bulky for me.

-Sell my Mom's Kindle 3 at $100 and then buy the Kindle Fire for her. Put the $100 on an Amazon giftcard and then just pay about $120 with my credit card.

Hopefully, $340 for total cost with taxes.

Two tablets that look exactly the same for two happy customers and it still saved me over $200 if I got the cheapest iPad 2 for $499 with taxes included. I already have an iPhone so an iPad 2 becomes redundant.

rim is dead

No they don't. iPad sales keep skyrocketing despite a down economy and $499 entry-level price. It's the Apple premium people are willing to pay.

iPad is priced aggressively. That's why it dominates the tablet industry.

7" devices didn't sold in the market so Amazon has to price it low, probably below cost.

No it is not .. the iPad is sold with a huge margin and washes millions into Apples bank account.
And, no it is not .. the iPad dominates the tablet market because it is pretty much the only working product out there. All the Android tablets I tried seemed overly sluggish and underpowered. Apple was smart enough to avoid that and came up with something that works.
Which is exactly why this Amazon tablet could potentially be a real competitor for a change. Amazon has proven in the past to also be able to come up with products that work for the customers and additionally they are really aggressive about getting into certain markets (to the point where they take losses to gain a good market position).
I do agree however .. I am not sure about a 7" choice .. would be the wrong size for me .. I feel the iPad is borderline to small for many tasks.

T.

Actually yeah the iPad is priced aggressively. Nobody else can make a comparable device with any sort of margin.

That apple makes money on it does not change it. The 499 pricepoint for the iPad is one of the best strategic marketing moves in the history of consumer electronics

If only RIM can wake up now.

"Like, wait a minute. That tablet looks exactly like ours!"

Then market the hell out of the PlayBook right BEFORE the Kindle Fire is released to avoid looking like copycats and keep the price competitive enough. I always said had TouchPad sold at $199, it would have still sold.

The problem is: What kind of tablet can you build and sell for $199 and make a profit, and what kind of tablet can you build and sell for $499 and make a profit. There is a huge difference in hardware between iPad and this "Kindle Fire", but the PlayBook, like the TouchPad, have hardware that is quite similar to the iPad. You can't build a PlayBook and sell it for $199 and not make a huge loss. At $199, Apple could bankrupt RIM by buying all the PlayBooks until RIM runs out of money :D

The Kindle Fire hardware is a lot cheaper to build. And Amazon can sell it with very little profit as long as customers buy eBooks from Amazon, something that RIM cannot do.

Amazon is going to tout its cloud for movies and music content, but the Fire has no 3G/4G; therefore on-board memory is important, but you are limited to 8GB with no SD card capability. This is a BIG drawback to taking the Fire where there is no access to 3G.

For movies, 3G is irrelevant. For most people, the cost of playing a 1 GB movie over 3G is extortionate.

Better OS? It's Android 2.1, which had its fair share of issues btw.

Amazon chose not to include any of the Google apps, so that means it cannot use the Android Market.
This also means it won't get counted by Google.

Not a big deal since 2.1 is easily rooted and you can tweak it to let you side load whatever apps you choose.

This is gonna sell like HOTCAKES

I create content and push the iOS to the limits constantly. I have held off getting an iPad2 because it's not quite there as a laptop replacement and I can already do most of what I want to do on my iPhone4. With a little bigger screen and a little faster processor, I don't even think I'd need an iPad at all. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised by the iPhone5.

That being said, a larger retina screen, etc. would be nice and am also looking forward to the iPad 3 at some point. Yes, I know that it's not intended to be a laptop replacement, but the fact is... it's very close to becoming one at least for me.

I have seen that many more people than I would have thought... don't use any more apps that came on their iPads or iPhones. For many people out there, just plain ol' browsing, watching movies, listening to music and checking email is all they ever do or even want to do. For them (and there are A LOT of them) this Kindle is going to be just perfect.

Who cares? The Android Market is infested with malware. This way people get a locked-down experience that is suitable for most of their everyday needs. Mostly consuming Amazon content, Netflix & eBooks.

The Fire is nice and all but the $199 price is deceptive. To have any constant content on it you have to buy it from Amazon and purchase the yearly $79 Prime membership.

I can see the cost of the Fire rapidly increasing with usage.

It's competition.

That being said. Wasn't it kindle that always said it was lightweight and did its job as a book reader?

Guess they found out that people want more than just a book reader.

People bash apple then they end up following them.

The kindle being a better reading device doesn't mean people don't want more.

But, all the arguments about e-reader (battery, weight, e-ink) seem to apply to the Fire.

If they could put both a color display and e-ink in the same device, that would be huge.

On first impressions I quite like it.

Can be used for surfing the web, playing games, reading/sending e mail, reading books, watching films, playing music, a spattering of apps, up to eight hours battery and all for $199.

All seems good to me.

And Amazon's 1-click is a very descriptive term.

Still seems like a fine line to me in how they granted the trademarks.

Yes, it does seem so at first glance. (Btw, Wal-Mart has a trademark on the very close "1-TOUCH" for its shopping. Other have trademarks on "1-CLICK-FINANCING", "1-CLICK-APPLY" and many other multiple word versions.)

A major factor is that no one filed a protest against Amazon's 1998 "1-CLICK" trademark request, whereas Apple's 2007 "Multi-Touch" had a protest filed against it as soon as possible, which started its reexamination and denials through several appeals.

Ironically, the PTO told Apple that if they had simply waited until they had used "Multi-Touch" for the five years prescribed by law to establish automatic secondary meaning, the trademark might've been granted then. Impatience and greed were also their downfall.

Re: tablets. I don't see much reason to get Amazon's version instead of the Nook Color, which is very similar and already has full Android ports available, giving kind of the best of both worlds since there is an Android Nook app. Except perhaps for the media plan.

The interface looks nice. These new devices coming out confirm to me that ios now looks quite boring.

Here's why it will sell at Christmas

It's not about the price or the features.

It's that it fits in the purse. Women will have Amazon shopping spree lunches with their friends. My girlfriend has zero interest in my iPad 2 (and I design a major magazine for it).

This? She'll want it the instant I show her Amazon's video.

I hadn't even bothered looking at the Fire given that it doesn't have electronic ink.

The streaming subscription is the only reason to buy it. A compelling one. What about international customers?

Everything about the presentation was very reminiscent of Apple. The tab looks great and the price even better. I don't know how it will cut into iPad sales, but I think it will instantly make all other 7" tabs irrelevant for the time being.
