Nice, this will make some challenge to Apple's technologically more advanced products. Predictable and smart move - cut the prices.

i really don't think the iPad has anything to worry about. If you're in the market for an iPad, you're not in the market for a Kindle.

It's like comparing a Mercedes and Ford Focus.

Good statement. If you are in the market for an iPad, you will find a way to get the iPad and not settle for another derivitive.

I don't think the Fire will give her all the games she might want. If its content you're after, no one has built something like apple's app store yet.

Amazon is actually great for music and movies, so they'll have those on their Fire, but I don't know how apps will play into this.

All those apps are available for android os as well. If it's a full fledged android tablet like it says. But what kind of cheesy processor must it have?

This is great - Apple will have to price the iPad more resonably now!

Before the iPad launched, it was generally predicted that it would cost at least $1000. When it came out, there was a good deal surprise at the actual price point – more than a few thought this was aggressive pricing, which would prove difficult for the competition.

The iPad may be priced at a level higher than some folk would prefer to pay, but I wouldn’t say the cost is unreasonable (although I wouldn’t mind a lower one!).

The tablet does not offer 3G connectivity, camera. or microphone.

Allegedly (according to gizmodo) there's a follow up product in Q1 2012 which will offer all of those. That will be a more credible competitor to the iPad although by then Apple may move the game on once more with the iPad 3
Normally I would agree but it depends more on the person. $199 for surfing the internet, well enough that is, is much more palatable to the people around here than the $499 OMG IT DOES EVERYTHING iPad. Smartphones are also a plague regardless of the user. I am a wizard with one while most others stick to texting and phone calls.

I was talking to some coworkers and they wanted a tablet in case their computer died to check their e-mail. "Content purchasing" never appeared to be of much interest but they did want to be able to continue to rip CDs.

I was trying to steer them away from the plethora of $349-449 AMD Fusion notebooks available and possibly waiting until Kal-El is launched to drive the prices on dual core Tegra 2 tablets down. Christmas looks interesting.

Still waiting for Battlefield 3...

I think he's in for a shock when iOS 5 comes around...

I think this has potential to be a great product. Amazon has demonstrated a better knowledge of what people want than HP, RIM, or other half baked tablets makers.

This product won't touch the iPad, but it's not designed to.

I think it's a mistake for Amazon executives to even compare it to the iPad. Even dumb people aren't dumb enough to think a $199 device is as good as a $499 device.

If it's anything like my Kindle, it's bound to be awesome. I don't feel the iPad "has it" in terms of a good device for reading. Obviously however, a tablet is used for so much more than reading.

Well, the Kindle uses e-Ink which is excellent for reading (lighting issue not withstanding), but I'm assuming this new Kindle Fire is using an LCD panel of some sort, so I don't know that it will be better/worse for reading vs. an iPad [in terms of display tech].

Plus the Kindle app for the iPad is pretty outstanding.

That being said, I still think this is going to be a big seller for Amazon, been following the presentation all morning.

potential lawsuit

Hmm.. Kindle Touch.. nice name but I smell potential lawsuit from the Big Apple on the name :D...

iPad is priced aggressively. That's why it dominates the tablet industry.

7" devices didn't sold in the market so Amazon has to price it low, probably below cost.

No camera or mic?

If I want to videocall someone (be it facetime or skype) or listen to music, I will use my iPhone. If I want something to sit on a coffee table so I can play the odd game and browse the net then Kindle fire provides a viable alternative. Hell, can even pre-load a movie to watch on the go. If (a big if) I can muster the energy to get myself out of the iTunes/iOS ecosystem.

The free 30-day trial of Prime is the real clincher for me. Without Prime it's just a $199 tablet. With Prime it's a $199 tablet plus something else that I can already get for free. How can you say no to that!

What is the real cost of replicating the iOS / iTunes ecosystem though? I can see some of the iPad growth impacted but as to people that already buy into iPod/iPad/iPhone ecosystem will find it hard to switch

They're not looking for that market. They're expanding the already huge Amazon customer base.

Really excellent stuff. Thanks to Apple for raising the standards. Thanks to Amazon for lowering the price.

Well, I delayed the purchase of a new car for years (BMW in that case) because I had my Toyota and I didn't see why I should spend money since I had already a car.

I think if you really want an iPad class device you will buy it anyway.

However there are millions of people who just want some kind of tablet to check web and email. They will buy the Kindle Fire and then delay a iPad purchase for a long time or even never buy one.

This could reduce iPad sales. Although I don't think it will be a lot (maybe 10% or so). It certainly won't change the tablet market.

No camera and no microphone? Excuse me?

I'd be far more interested in the cheaper kindles - these are sweet deals!

Yeah, I suspect this is almost like a subsidized play on the price, i.e., go into the market at (below?) cost, and since it's tied directly to a revenue source for Amazon, they're make up the difference as content is purchased.

I could see amazing running all sorts of promos that tie you into their services and offer hardware cheaper ("Sub to Prime for $79 and receive a Kindle Fire for $179" sort of thing).

Think i will replace my Kindle with the Kindle Touch and get a Fire for browsing around the house. Wanted to get a HP Touchpad but couldn't get hold of one (at the cheap price point) Do UK users get the Amazon Prime thing too?

This makes a perfect tablet to read with. I currently use my wife's iPad but it's just a little too big. However, I'll probably wait until the folks at Cyanogen get a hold of it.

My iPad doesnt have 3G connectivity either and I dont suffer. And w/ my T-Mobile plan thats less than $50 with free tethering, I get faster data than anyone on Verizon or ATT.

I sure hope that Apple enabled syncing of Movies and TV Shows via the cloud (for iPhones and iPod Touches) by the time iOS 5 comes out, cause it sure isn't enabled now. That would save me some space.

I love Apple, Netflix, and B&N, but...

Amazon is competing with all 3 TOGETHER now. So even if it doesn't 'win' against one of them, it will take a significant slice.

Well done Amazon
