I've already got an iPad so the Kindle Fire doesn't interest me. What does interest me is that possible higher end e-Ink based Kindle talked about with some touch controls. The question is, is it a new version of e-Ink or the same Pearl one?

The only threat towards Apple really is the iTunes bookstore. From what I understand people just aren't buying books through Apple, and this tablet combined with a new Kindle for $79 will further bump up Amazon's marketshare in the ebook area.

The Fire Tablet isn't really designed to compete with the iPad. It's designed to be a Kindle on steroids by being an ebook reader plus a media player.

I adore my Kindle, but if this is anything like the Nook tablet/ereader, I want no part of it.

They just revealed a black and white Kindle Touch with e-ink display.
$99.
Looks just like the new Nook.

$99 according to Engadget.

Edit: thought you had $79 originally.

Edit2: Has a 3G version for $149.

Looks like a non-touch version is coming too...

...which *will* be $79. I'll be reordering that one shortly :D

Except wait...it had no keyboard?

Unless they are selling it in stores, it's not going to be a big competitor to the iPad. iPads are displayed in stores to be played with and people fall in love with them. If Amazon is only selling online, it's going to be more of a risk to buy one if you can't play with it first.

they are selling kindles in stores in the UK, why won't they sell this in stores also?

I made popcorn. Not only can't I wait to see what Amazon has come up with - I just know the comments on this message board are going to be fantastic (especially by those who are so quick to review something they haven't used and who have to slam anything non-Apple)

Too right! I'm looking forward to this also because I quite like Amazon and think they've done a great job with the kindle so I may purchase this.

My daughter is almost 2 years old now. She's been using an ipad for various games and reading/learning apps since she was about 9 months old. It's also been great for playing movies while on car trips.
Lately she drives me and my wife nuts, wanting either our phones or the ipad for angry birds, monkey blast or her interactive books. So much so I was leaning toward getting her a personal ipod touch.

I'll have to wait and see how this kindle plays on the field first. It's right at the same price point. It will all come down to content.

I don't think the Fire will give her all the games she might want. If its content you're after, no one has built something like apple's app store yet.

Amazon is actually great for music and movies, so they'll have those on their Fire, but I don't know how apps will play into this.

People need to STOP COMPARING IT TO AN IPAD. Look at it as its own device. For $199 you're getting a device that can read books, watch videos on Amazon Prime, browse the internet, and access to an app store from a reputable company. Not bad at all for only $199.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A5313e Safari/7534.48.3)

But the Kindle's unique selling point as an e-reader is its e-ink screen that makes it much easier to read. The Fire won't have that, so it'll basically be the same for reading a book as the iPad. And for everything else it will be not as good as the iPad. For that reason it will fail...

Or would do if not for a really competitive price point. Must be why they priced it so low. To give it at least a fighting chance!!

As others have stated already, this doesn't compare against an iPad so much as RIM PlayBook or the other 7" tablet devices on the market, like Samsung Galaxy Touch, or the many cheaper no-name tablets.

That tiny new kindle e-ink touch is the hotness. I liked the tiny nook with no keyboard, this is better for me. :)

No camera or mic? If all the other Android-based tablets have flopped, what makes Amazon think this will be a success with less content?

I think this tablet will be a winner for Amazon. Perfect size for seniors and small children, able to stream movies, music etc from Amazon, instant shopping gratification and a Kindle all in one since Amazon's ecosystem is already in place and proven.I'm perfectly satisfied with my iPad 2 but this will be perfect for my mother.

I hope it's good. At that price, it really stops being a question of which one but rather: BOTH!

People need to STOP COMPARING IT TO AN IPAD...
How can you NOT! It's competing against it for chrissakes. All of the Android tablets have been and they've all crashed/burned. This is the new kid on the block. People can't help but compare. Yes they have different strengths and weaknesses -- time to sort it out.

I think this has potential to be a great product. Amazon has demonstrated a better knowledge of what people want than HP, RIM, or other half baked tablets makers.

This product won't touch the iPad, but it's not designed to.

I think it's a mistake for Amazon executives to even compare it to the iPad. Even dumb people aren't dumb enough to think a $199 device is as good as a $499 device.

i really don't think the iPad has anything to worry about. If you're in the market for an iPad, you're not in the market for a Kindle.

It's like comparing a Mercedes and Ford Focus.

Amazon's Kindle will break into iPad's market share because of low price and available content (books, streaming, shopping...).

I still don't understand how people are suggesting this will compete with an iPad. It will sell well (relative to how Android tablets sell "well"). It will not put any kind of dent in iPad sales.

There she is!

7-inch IPS display, dual-core processor, 14.6 ounces.
100,000 movies and TV shows, 17 million songs, access to the Android Appstore, Kindle books...
...full-color magazines, and all stored for free using Amazon Cloud Storage.

Yes!! Getting a Kindle at $79 and a Kindle Touch at $99. I love Amazon and of course my Kindle!!

Dang, bougth a Kindle 3 month ago.

Anyway, a $199 tablet sounds interesting. It does not compare nor compete with the iPad.

However it will eat into iPad sales IMHO because a lot of people will buy it because it's cheap and then decide not to buy an iPad on top of that.

All of this of course depends on the overall quality, specs of the Kindle Fire.
