Yeah, but eventually you find yourself living in the past. At some point the Internet of Things will be built into everything and won't be the early adopter carnival it is today.
I would rather live in the mountains with Grizzly Adams than be under constant surveillance within my own home. Today it's Amazon Echo, Google Home and Apple's Homepod, tommorrow it's telescreens. Big Brother is watching you.

"All right, I've just sent $250,000 to your hairdresser via iMessage."

lol

Notie Every time these issues arise, Apple is the only one left out of this... Now isn't that interesting. We becoming a "Apple is the best and you all sux" kinda industry. while Apple maintain its high standard of privacy, to me, even the higher standard won't convince me.

It does get to me sometimes, why we do that and ommit Apple, but then i just realize we are only trying to protect Apple.

So now we know what Alexa have been laughing about. She’s been laughing because she’s been sending recordings of our conversations to headquarters, but this time she made an oops. Oops.

How was the audio sent?
How did Alexa get the "contact" to which it was sent?

Without this key information, on the news you can use scale, this story rates a goose egg.

There would be no way to send a message direct........ you need an Amazon account just to use Echo. Just like Siri must talk via Apple services to be useful.

There would be no reason to sign up in this case.

If this messaging with Echo were directly one-to-one, then it would have been better. But these systems are dumb.... You can't even say"Hello" without internet access.

In this day and age of internet hype and FUD paired with fake news I call BS on a lot these stories.

I agree. However, around here, it breaks down like this:

Unquestionably Fake News:
  • Anything that implies anything negative about Apple or Apple products
  • Anything that implies anything positive about companies or products that compete with Apple
  • Anything that implies that Apple is second or lower in any contest where first is considered best
Absolutely Valid News:
  • Anything that implies anything positive about Apple or Apple products
  • Anything that implies anything negative about companies or products that compete with Apple
  • Anything that implies that Apple is first in any contest where first is considered best
We don't even question the "valid" news, but we'll rip the "fake" news to shreds.

To quote that great Sonny & Cher on the collective consistency: "the beat goes on.... the beat goes on" ;)

My sister bought me an Echo Dot back in 2016 and we used it for about two weeks before we unplugged it and tossed it in the closet. (I really need to get around to selling/giving it away.) The thing is creepy and frankly pretty useless.

People are way too casual about privacy. I'd love to have an assistant that isn't an idiot, but privacy of data is much more important... So I guess I'll have to wait for Apple to fix Siri, because damn this kind of stuff...

And here’s your proof about people not caring:

For me (YMMV) I can live with this. I don't, however, connect Alexa to anything financial or to my home security system. Lights, Devices, and Music are my staples.

People put these devices in their home to control certain home functions like lights and music through voice control. Also, to have the ability to ask question on varuous topic through voice commands.

Hope this helps.

Pure lazy people who don't have the intelligence to do things for themselves.

Direct or otherwise, the story does not explain how this woman's Amazon account contained any contact information for anybody but her, and it sure doesn't explain how it or even by what means the audio was sent to one of her husband's employees. Shamelessly deficient reporting.

Those stupid lazy people who would use a remote control to change volume on their TV. Or take some sort of transportation to get somewhere they can just use their own feet and walk.

And here’s your proof about people not caring:

Some people are so stupid! WHY would anyone buy this cheaply made rubbish from Amazon? All Amazon cares about is making money from you and more money. They don't care about humanity. Oh my days! Seriously, these products are pure cheap rubbish aimed at the lowest denominator.

So, HomePod sounds better, listens better, and doesn't invade your privacy. But Siri still sucks a lot of the time. (And I am an Apple fanboy.)

If it's listening to you at all you have know idea if its keeping things private and my guess is what she was saying is part of what triggered it to send the info to a contact. Something any smart speaker could do. HomePod included. Especially with how awful Siri is.

Yes. Explains the level of obesity, diabetes, cancer & heart disease in the USA and western world! Along with all of the pollution that causes cancer from manufacturing this rubbish!

Pretty much any company cares about those things.

Where's the headline-grabbing stories about how many times conversations about nothing like this one and conversations about something have went out to random contacts due to butt-dialing mistakes? I've been the recipient of that kind of "oops" call maybe as frequently as every month or two for years now.

Accidents happen. Humans + technology beg for at least some "oops" events.

Furthermore, the story is relayed by the person to which this happened. How often have you had someone telling you about some ooops event where it's entirely something else's or someone else's fault? Are about any of us humans ever able to tell our side of the story in a fair & balanced way... especially if it might make us look like we're an idiot?

Not wanting to overly defend Amazon here, but I bet there's a few more relevant details to this story than we're getting. Almost every accident is someone or something else's fault...

I'll bet it turns out that it was icicles that caused this problem too.

Or maybe Scut Farcus has something to do with it??? ;)

I wonder where posting on internet forums falls.
