I'm talking about after a year and the phone messes up. Will I be eligible for the full price I paid?

Probably not. Amex will probably want a repair estimate from authorized apple repair shop (or apple store). They will want to you get at the best a $269 out of warranty replacement and will reimburse you for that amount.

You will not get the full $650. They reserve the right to give you the lesser of the cost ($269) if that "fixes" your out of warranty problems.

And a replacement iPhone will fix your problems.

The rear camera on my iPhone 5 broke (hardware failure confirmed my apple store). The replacement cost for the phone through apple was $269 as my phone was out of its one year warranty. The original cost of the 64 gig phone was around $430 including tax.

American Express extends many manufacture warranties for the same period of time, after the originals warranty expires. I call Amex and give them all of the information regarding this case, and they credit my statement for the FULL $430. I explained to them that the replacement cost is $269 but all they cared about was the original purchase price.

Don't forget about Amex extended warranty people!!

Yeah Amex changed their warranty. I just did out of warranty repair. Expected to have to fax them my out of warranty exchange for $269 plus taxes. They didn't even want it.

They refunded me the $299 (32gb subsidized iPhone 5) plus taxes.

This isn't guaranteed as Amex reserves the right to determine the mode of repair or replacement route as they see fit. They're currently reimbursing the full $199/299/399 because it's close to the $269 replacement cost.
 
yea amex is pretty good with these things. when i got my skis stolen years ago, they refunded the card no questions asked. when i got my new chase united card i made sure they had a similar perk.
While Chase does cover it I can assure you, from personal experience, they will run you around in circles before they eventually pay (they do EVENTUALLY pay). For these types of benefits no one comes close to Amex for their customer services.

Yes, that's true. A friend of mine tried to get a laptop repaired under a Visa (or Mastercard, don't remember which) and they required a mountain of paperwork, obviously to dissuade the customer.

Nothing comes close to Amex, but then again that's why not everyone is eligible for Amex and why it's more expensive for merchants to accept.
 
LOL, that's what my experiece was. A Laptop w/VISA. It was horrible. Eventually got paid (~$300) but what a hassle. Now every purchase I make for anything that is "electronic or mechanical" is on AMEX.

So... Unrelated but related. I ordered a Portenzo iPad case about a month ago. Two days ago I dropped it and the wood cracked on it. I called AMEX and told them what happened. Since I purchased it within 90 days, and since they cover accidental damage within that period, they refunded my account for the purchase price of the case.

I had a similar situation with my wife's iphone last year that I purchased with a Chase Sapphire/ Visa Signature card. The on/off button broke and it was out of warranty.

Visa doubles the manufacturers warranty by up to three years. They simply had me submit the receipt, the credit card statement and a copy of apples warranty along with a written letter from Apple stating the repair costs. After that they gave me the green light to have it repaired using the same credit card and then credited me the repair costs.

All Visa cards have the extended warranty coverage, not just the Visa Signatures.

That's only if the item in question cannot be repaired. Given that the iPhone can be repaired (actually replaced) for $269, they don't ask for iPhones back.
 
My wife's iphone 5s (32GB) has a problem. The back camera is dead. I submitted a claim with Amex but they haven't told me how long they will take to resolve this. In the mean time, I have a Apple Store appt coming saturday. I am sure Apple will want $269 to replace the phone since the phone is 22 months old. Can I get the phone replaced first and then try to get it refunded by Amex or do I hold on to my bad iPhone and wait!! Amex is not giving me a time frame.

It should not be a problem to pay for the out of warranty replacement by Apple and have Amex extended warranty reimburse you. I had the same type of issue happen a few years ago. After I had paid Apple for an out of warranty replacement, I submitted a claim with American Express and after submitting the out of warranty replacement receipt, Amex issued a credit within a few weeks.

Right on! A few years ago my iPhone 4 power button broke and a single call to Am Ex and they refunded my $199 (subsidized) purchase price which more than covered the cost of the repair. It's pretty rare, but Am Ex does have excellent benefits and customer service. And, at least that year, the refund more than covered the $95 annual fee for my green card.

Thanks for posting this. I've always used cards with extended warranty coverage for any electronic purchase. Fortunately I've never had to use them. Based on this I'll continue to favor my Amex over my Chase sapphire for electronic purchases.
 
Another option is if you have a Visa Signature card. They have pretty much the same benefits as Amex cards and in some cases better but they also are not just handed out like candy. The minimum credit limit for a visa signature card is $5,000 and if you're not approved for that you aren't going to get one.

Whereas Apple provides a screen damage repair service for $109 for the iPhone 6 which I'm assuming is the most common accidental damage.

Hmm... so I guess the main concern with AmEx alone would be if your phone was lost, stolen, or suffered some kind of extensive damage (that doesn't fall under warranty because no device defect involved), after the first 90 days?

That would be correct. I think AppleCare is more for users who aren't tech savvy as it extends the 90 day complimentary support to 2 years. But for the majority of us on a Mac site, I would think its best to depend on the community here for any questions or troubleshooting advice.
 
I have Amex BCP (Blue Cash Preferred) and used this to purchase my Plus. Do I have these features too I would assume?
