While most of the recent focus has been whether or not the next iPhone will have a dramatic external redesign, one feature that seems to be universally agreed on is that the new iPhone will incorporate the much faster dual-core A5 processor, which also houses a much faster graphics processing unit (GPU).

The A5 was first introduced in the iPad 2 in March. At the time, Apple said the iPad 2 had up to nine times the graphics performance as the original A4-powered iPad.

A recent set of GLBenchmark tests by Anandtech (graph above) shows how much faster in this the A5's GPU is as compared to the A4, at least with respect to certain graphics performance. The results may not be exact, as Apple could underclock the new iPhone's CPU as compared to the iPad 2, but the results should be somewhat representative.

Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone on Tuesday, October 4th during a media event.

People get their hopes up too much.

Start to accept the 4S; there won't be an external redesign until maybe next year (or later).

I'm thinking that the A5 will be even more significant for the iPhone, than the iPad, since it's a smaller device. We're looking at a beast here guys. 1GB of RAM, Dual Core A5 processor, this thing will run like water.

Yup.

And I'd be shocked if any of the apps written in the near future (read: 8-12 months) will take advantage of this so as to not to alienate the legacy hardware in the iP4.

Big speed increase that you won't see any real benefit from for some time.

Oh, and good luck enjoying your fast graphics with a shattered glass back or glass screen because the iPhone 4S continued to use fragile build materials and refused to put a protective bezel around the phone to protect the edges from direct shattering impacts.

I believe everyone already expected this.........

Yeah, but most people in this forum are more preoccupied with the shape of the form than with the vastly improved performance!! It leads me to believe that they would much rather get the new shape than a better phone!!

Preparing the masses for a total let down.

I believe MacRumors is just preparing us for a letdown on Tuesday. No Legendary iPhone 5. So they are kinda telling us to cheer up because well get an A5 on our iPhone 4S's :(

Eh?

There were a ton of optimized apps for the iPad 2 at launch that still supported the original iPad.

I just wanted a bigger screen, no more than 4" or else it be a bit much.

EDIT: We kinda already knew that an A5 was to be expected so nobody really says anything bout that.

This is why I can't get excited over a speed increase.

Are there any iPad 2-only apps that take advantage of the A5?

iPhone 5/4S will not have the same A5 chip as iPad

The A5 chip in iPad is too big and power hungry for the phones. A5 for iPhone will have the same core but GPU part (and other modules) might be changed so it is very likely that iPhone will not have the same GPU performance as iPad.

Quote: "Right away the primary observation is that the A5 is a VERY BIG IC, with a processor die size of 12.1 x 10.1 mm. You'll recall that the Apple A4 was a package-on-package with the processor and its supporting memory stacked one capsule atop another and it had a processor die size of 7.3mm x 7.3mm."

What's to be letdown about?? We are getting a BETTER Phone??

Or would you rather have less performance and a pretty phone??

This is a tool, not an accessory!!

looks like im getting a samsung infuse 4g LOL

My brother in law just got that phone a couple of weeks ago after he decided to take a swim in the ocean with his 3GS. He likes the bigger screen but now he's thinking of returning it and getting an iPhone 4. He should have listened to me about waiting and borrow my old flip phone.

So in short,

The iPad2 processor is faster than the iPhone4 processor and if they put the iPad2 processor in the new iPhone(4S/5), then IT WILL HAVE A FASTER PROCESSOR THAN THE IPHONE4!!1!

Startling.

Is this just to get something new on the front page?

The should call it the iPhone 4Z, Z is for zoom!

Wow, we're only one day away from the official announcement, and still NO ONE really knows what the iPhone 5 is going to be like.

Sometimes Apple managed to leak every little detail about their new products, and then sometimes like this time they don't give us a single crumb of information.

Sucks to be you. Maybe we can set up a paypal account and get donations for an iPhone.

You're funny. Wonder how my iPhone 4 has survived so many falls on hard surfaces. Must be because it's extremely fragile.

This is good for the iOS 5 but developers are still designing their apps (and games) to market to a bigger population and not for the powerful processors alone. So basically, apps are still made for the slower 3GS. Fast processors are just catered to spec who*res and that's it. :D

Your iPhone 4's will still function equally compared to the new phone 98% of the time. I know geeks would love that 2% nevertheless. :)

The iPhone is not made for zoo animals.

Some of us feel like we know exactly what the iPhone "5" will be like:

iPhone 4S (N94)
- iPhone 4 case design (3.5" Screen), but improved internals
- CDMA and GSM in one phone, "World Phone"
- HSPA+ (at least 14.4mbps)
- 1GB RAM
- A5 Processor
- SGX 543MP2 GPU (Same as iPad 2)
- Assistant Voice Recognition

Apple will underclock it.

It'll run like water until the iOS upgrade cycle makes it run like molasses.
