An Extensive List of Things You Can Say to Siri

My Toyota has built in navigation, believe it's a Denso product. It is also voice controlled. I hardly ever use the voice controls. It is too easily confused by road noise, AC fan, other people talking in my car. It has a myriad of voice controls, I'm hungry- brings up icons for restaurants etc, but besides the novelty, impress the friends factor It's not all that usable.

It'd be awesome if it understood commands like:

- launch Facebook app
- dial 6654656460 using Skype app
- define/pronounce the word spelt as P-A-N-A-C-H-E (in case one doesn't know its pronunciation)
- how do you spell the word FACADE? (in case one knows its pronunciation but not the spelling)
- restart my iPhone
- check for software updates
- set passcode lock
- decrease brightness
- turn WiFi off
- clear all notifications in the notification center
- take me to the page that has the app Angry Birds
- delete Google+ app
- clear Safari browsing history
- back up my iPhone in 2 days
- check the App Store for any app updates
- translate the word HAPPINESS into French
- fetch lyrics for the currently playing song on Safari
- search App Store for the most popular social networking app and install it
- lock my iPhone
- (while on a call) turn on the speaker
- (while on a call) press number 3
- clear all notification badges on all apps
- mark all my mail as read
- show me all contacts whose phone number ends in 6520
- tweet the latest photo in Photos app
- mute all sounds at 12AM
- what is the next holiday in the US?

I think people get sucked in by the ad's for these things. All of a sudden supermarket cashiers are thinking 'oh wow I can move all my board meetings to tuesday at 2pm and remember to collect the dry cleaning for the emmy's before i get home from work.'

Its a novelty that will pass. Facetime was supposed to be revolutionary. It wasnt.

This is what I'm talking about. I doubt most of those will happen out of the box but that is definitely the near future. All those are real world, everyday types of commands that would be nice.

"Siri, who is this person next to me in my bed?"

"His name is Jonathan Keller. You met him last night at Revolution Night Club, on South Bumby Avenue in Orlando Florida."

"Thank you, Siri."

At first I was really excited when I saw the title of this story...

Then I felt a little bad because getting excited about what I can talk to my phone about is so geeky.

But now I've embraced my geekiness and feel well adjusted again...

I wonder if Siri is single?

Since you still have to "activate" siri - there are still clicks of the button. It's not like Siri is "always listening"

How is siri activated, is it always within its own app? Do you have to touch something to get it started? Is it able to multitask and "listen" while other apps are active?

These are big questions for me, much of the appeal is hands free use but that's not as useful if it has to be manually started. It would be great if it could just be activated in the background and perk up when it's talked to (maybe listening for "siri" or some other activation word?). And working within other apps - it would be great to be able to tell it "Start netflix and play next episode of 30 Rock" and then when that episode is over, be able to tell the netflix app "play next episode" or play something else.

Not that this wouldn't be really useful without that, but at least for a version 2 I'd really love to see more additions like that - switching over to a dedicated app isn't as handy as direct access from anywhere on the device would be.

I don't know, it doesn't seem like including a Calendar on a handheld is a passing novelty. All this does is let you quickly make simple entries.

LOl, poor Siri would have a hell of a time, trying to keep up with me AND the alters that take over me during my drunken stupors. I wonder if she's capable of handling multiple personalities and if she understands slur?

I'm confused. BBM is tied to BlackBerry devices, and iMessage is tied to Apple devices. What's the difference?
You use only one app for all your messaging needs. If the recipient does not have iOS5, the message automatically goes out as an SMS. I am not sure how it is in Blackberries, but I believe there are dedicated SMS and BBM apps.

From the Keynote, there were a few ways. You can hold the home button down for a couple of seconds on the lock screen or home screen, or where ever else.
The virtual keyboard will also have a mic icon next to the spacebar so that Siri can listen to text and then paste it into the field you're typing in.
If you have a bluetooth headset, you can press your headset button for a couple of seconds.

I don't think that previous voice recognition software is in the same league as Siri. Although background noise is obviously a potential problem, the fact that Siri interprets things contextually should considerably improve its accuracy, even in a noisy environment.

But it doesnt replace note taking. Note taking has a need. Voice control has been around for quite some time and hasnt taken off. I liken it to Facetime when it was to reignite video calling. This hasnt happened. People will feel awkward talking commands to their phone. They will most likely use this for some fun down the pub. They wont be using it on the train (fingers crossed).

I don't understand how some people can say that this is stupid and that they won't use it after day 1... I can not wait to just speak a text message instead of typing it, or reply to this forum by talking instead of typing... It will be so nice to tell my phone to set an alarm clock instead of opening it up and doing it. I also put my work schedule in my phone, it normally takes 3-4 minutes for each week. This will now take 1 minute!

You'll understand when you start using it. You'll learn that it's much faster to do it by typing because Siri will only be able to understand what you are trying to say every tenth time (if you are lucky)

Good for txting.....everyhing else is jst a tap instead..ie. How ard is it to tap on weather.....
On a side note, does Scott Forestall really need a geofence remnder to call his wife? If so, i would say his marrage is prolly not the healthiest..

He was exemplifying. Just the same way you're trolling.

It's pretty clear that you don't understand what makes Siri "more" than voice control. Hit Wikipedia and look up more info. Siri really cannot be defined quite so easily.

Siri-ously.

I'll use this about as much as I use FaceTime. I remember when FaceTime was all anyone in the US was raving about last year. Reality hits hard, you rarely use it, if at all. Sure some people will chime in right about now saying how it's changed their lives. But on the whole, it's cool and will help some people a lot. It just won't benefit the vast majority.

Siri = game-changer.

Admit it. There's no point in denying the obvious genius of this feature. It pretty much completely changes how we use our mobile phones.

Really? Dont see me use it often. In public I dont want to talk to my phone, in the car you have to look for it and push buttons (w7 mango does this a lot better) At home perhaps but not often.

You don't want to be seen talking into a phone in public? Perhaps phone ownership is not for you.

I like apple and I want the same thing he wants. I want it to be SMART... not just an advanced selection of things. I want to be able to set multiple alarms in one command.

(no one has said, "Siri, Reserve a table for two at Kyo Sushi Bar for 7")

Siri "Done"

"thanks Siri")

Agreed. I can't believe the new Siri won't be able to do this. It is certainly not too much to ask for all of the options that had been working on a standalone app for over a year, as well as being deeply integrated into the iOS.

5.2 will have this functionality....at a much later date. Very underwhelming

Really hope it understands Aussie english. I'll forgive it if it can't find a good tradie for a bung dunny but the dealbreaker for me will be if it knows 'McDonalds' (I feel weird even typing that out) is Maccas...
