But it doesn't make sense to a lot of us. The monthly fees on an iPhone are just too much for a lot of budgets. You pay your iPod touch once and that's it. No more to pay every month after that.

Yeah, but everyone has a phone.

Not everyone buys an iPod.

Additionally, the iPod touch has to compete with all the other iPod models.

Some of you guys are the most hardheaded diehard Apple fanboys imaginable. It really is hilarious to watch you argue about this. Keep it up...for the lulz! :D

The First Commercial GUI
star1vg.gif

Xerox's Star workstation was the first commercial implementation of the graphical user interface. The Star was introduced in 1981 and was the inspiration for the Mac and all the other GUIs that followed.

-The Star was not a commercial product. Xerox didn't sell them. (Well eventually they did, but not as PCs. they were to be similar to what we'd call a terminal today.)
-the middle image is actually of an Apple Lisa. I think you were just showing as a comparison, but some people might think your saying it's a Star. It's not. It's a Lisa.
-Apple compensated Xerox for the ideas borrowed from the Star. SJ and the mac team were already working on the GUI before any of them ever saw the Star though. Also, Macintosh 1 wasn't a copy of the Star. In fact a lot of the stables of a modern GUI today were innovated by Apple for the Macintosh.

What is the present smartphone marketshare?

For Q1/11 aprox. 15% for Apple.

Q4/10 numbers were:

r2011013.gif

Again: Apple sold 3 million more devices in Q4/10 than they did in Q3/10 (16 million compared to 13 million in total numbers) but they lost 0.7% marketshare in that 3 month (Q3/10: 16.7% marketshare, see first graph, Q4/10: 16.0%, see above).

One of the three basics that must be proven in order to win a trade dress case, is the likelihood of confusion.

In other words, would someone think they're buying one thing but really getting another, such as might happen with shoes or pills or whatever.

Does anyone think that a normal person would actually confuse a Samsung Galaxy (especially with that huge "Samsung" on it) with an Apple iPhone when they're buying it?

I mean, is Apple going to claim that they're losing sales because the Galaxy is so close to the iPhone that people can't tell the difference? If so, that sure doesn't say much for the iPhone. Or it says a lot for the Galaxy.

Yes! Some people will think they are buying a Samsung iPhone.

Hmm.

What about this:

So the interesting fact is:

Verizon iPhone release didn't help Apple to stop losing marketshare although everyone said the deal will quadruple iPhone sales.

iPhone Q1/11: 19 million (+ 2.5 million)
Android Q1/11: 38 million (+8 million)

Ouch. No wonder they are now sueing HTC and Samsung. If you can't beat them in the market, beat them in court. Apple must have learned that from Nokia (like they learned the choppy animations when you start third party apps in iOS 4.3.2 from Symbian).

iPhone: 4% of market, 50% of profit

So whats the point of market share if you're not making any money?

Sigh. The iPhone is still gaining market share. Not losing market share.
Yes they are.

Apple's doing a great job with one exception.

It's the fact that they just can't be happy and celebrate all they've accomplished.

They have to desperately dive into the slimy gutter and fire off law suits.

I'd enjoy it if Apple's overall image was one of a great successful company, instead of a desperate sleazy female seeking tabloid attention.

If one didn't know better you'd think Apple is the one struggling for success.

Acting paranoid, insecure and arrogant is deeply embedded in their thoughts, actions, and DNA.

What a way to tarnish the image of an American Company.

Well you can see that with the Mac. About 3% worldwide marketshare but Apple makes tons of money with it.

And eveybody crys tears here when some 5 year old Windows games finally get ported to MacOS. You want that to happen with the iPhone and iOS compared to Android? Fine. But I'm sure 99% of iPhone buyers don't want that scenario.

That's US mobile subscribers marketshare for Jan and Feb '11. My numbers are worldwide smartphone marketshare. Completly different things.

Well if I can understand that:

1. US mobile subscriber marketshare is US smartphone marketshare & Worldwide smartphone marketshare is World wide smartphone marketshare.

2. You never specified which marketshare you were talking about.

Lol if apple was a religion it would have more extremists than Islam, Judaism, and Christianity combined!

Pssstt... I think it already is a religion to many.

When someone speaks about "smartphone marketshare" he usually means world wide and not only for Botswana. But nice try.

You mean when someone says Marketshare they mean that other place outside of the center of the universe America?

Not trying to defend poor gaming on the macintosh, but android is the one getting year old titles now.

Just to make it more clear, marketshare is one small factor considered for game development. There's much more than that. For e.g. people paying for actual games, ease of code for a single graphic card [a big hassle for windows gaming].

Just read through?

HA I knew you were going to say that. developer prefer to develop for iOS. iOS user spend more money on Apps than Android user. Plus iPod Touch user can use the same apps as the iPhone. There won't be a Windows for the smartphones theres already too many players in the game.

honestly i don't understand Company Obsession.

Its fine to love gadgets, regardless of company, but to be blindly following a multinational corporation whose only motivation is $$$ for its shareholders, its kinda retarded.

EVERYONE. BE A GADGET FAN. DON'T OBSESS OVER A COMPANY.

Are you real? How is that understood?

Most of the times when marketshare is discussed, its discussed for the US only. I reside in England and I know its stupid to neglect the world; but every other sale means much more to US than to the world.

Talk about CD's/DVD's/Vinyls/MobilePhones/Computers etc.

I am not saying the world doesn't count; but US is supposed to be a big benchmark. You could have at least mentioned which marketshare you were talking about.

and the even bigger joke ist...all the apple stuff is produced for a small budget in china and sold like Karl Lagerfeld himself produced every little piece. Sorry but that's a shame!

Well Rovio (Angry Birds) thinks otherwise:

http://www.insidemobileapps.com/2011/03/13/angry-birds-android-ios/

"The company said in December that it expected to make $1 million per month from Android by the end of 2010. (...) Now that the app has seen about 100 million installs across all platforms, Rovio is not getting the same initial bump in paid download revenue from Apple’s app store. On Android, the company doesn’t offer paid Angry Birds apps, but sees recurring revenue from advertising."

So they make more money with their free Android version than they do with the paid iOS version.

You're wrong. Apple is losing marketshare for over 2 years now. Just because they are selling MORE iPhones doesn't mean they are gaining marketshare. The market grows much faster than the iPhone sales. Have a look at Nokia: In Q4/10 Nokia sold almost 7 million more smartphones but they lost about 10% marketshare.

iPhone Worldwide smartphone market share
Q1 2008 5.3%
Q1 2009 10.8%
Q1 2010 15.4%
Q1 2011 ???

How have they been losing market share for two years now?

In Q1/11 Apple lost about 2% marketshare despite the fact that they sold about 2.5 million more iPhones. Just read the latest GfK numbers (needs registered account), it's all in there. NDP numbers for Q1/11 will be released next week if you trust them more.

2.5 million more? Apple has likely sold more than double then number of iPhones in q1 2011 than q1 2010 (8.75 million).
