I could see something like that where Apple TV and games are integrated into a high-end set. Would love for someone to own this space and clean up all of these damn black boxes. Of course, they may have to cave in use Blu-Ray somehow.

I could see something like that where Apple TV and games are integrated into a high-end set. Would love for someone to own this space and clean up all of these damn black boxes. Of course, they may have to cave in use Blu-Ray somehow.
i've got an ATVclassic and the the ATV2. i don't need a $2000 apple cinema display. what i do need/want is an apple double din car stereo with built in wifi, 3g, touchscreen, ipod and maps. i want to pull up in my driveway every night and be able to wirelessly sync songs from my mac to my car's stereo. i want 3g for pandora or maybe mobileme (if that cloud storage thing ever comes to fruition). i want more mobile not stagnant, sit-in-front-of-the tv crap.
honestly, since getting the ATV a few years ago, i watch tv less. i listen to more music streamed through my entire house. if i sit down in front of the television its almost always for the purpose of watching a movie. i love the mobility of apple products now and i always have my mac for a base station to come back to to do work.

i think i post this same junk every time i see the rumor of an apple branded television.
honestly, since getting the ATV a few years ago, i watch tv less. i listen to more music streamed through my entire house. if i sit down in front of the television its almost always for the purpose of watching a movie. i love the mobility of apple products now and i always have my mac for a base station to come back to to do work.

Cant see this working if its true. Apple are well known for their pisstake prices when it comes to displays. You'd have to be an idiot to buy one when you can get much better displays at much lower prices elsewhere.
If they continue the '10000 x cost' method, it'll fall flat on its face when you can pick up a pretty decent 42" HD TV for in the $600 - $900 range.
But, I would also guess AppleTV will be built in, so they will use that 'magical, one remote control' argument.
Finally, theres the technical problems. They would need to include analogue tuners, in addition to DVB-T and DVB-T2 (which is in short supply) in order to get digital tv in the UK and AU as analogue is already over half way through being removed.
Bottom line: Not gunnu happen OR will be a really piss poor 1st revision.

agreed. i just don't get it. margins in the streaming business are razor thin...

It makes MUCH more sense to make a set top box that is compatible with any tv, and thus have wider appeal and adoption than to make a TV that has to compete with every other TV manufacturer out there. This is not Apple's game. Their game it to look at a market that is not currently being exploited to its full extent, figure out what people may want, then come in and redefine that niche. Worked with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. There were predecessor in each of these markets but Apple came in and completely dominated it because they redefined it and tied it into a (relatively) easy to use ecosystem. Ok, it a really easy to use ecosystem, just slow and bloated.
No, nay, never... nay, never, no more! (sung with an Irish lilt). TV = mass-produced low-margin market that is focused primarily on price and specs. Exactly the kind of market that Apple avoids like the plague.
I thought it was unlikely too,but after reading this thread,with multitudes of people flatly stating it will never happen,I'm leaning much more toward them actually making a television.
The amount of certainty with which you make a prediction is inversely proportional to it's likelihood of being accurate.

I am not sure why it won't die. I suppose they might, I just can not think of any reason why. The Apple TV as a STB is a much better fit for them. Might they sell this to tv makes as an embedded option. Maybe. Will they make their own TV, I still don't see the point.

I agree this is a silly idea. Who in the world would want the Apple TV integrated into a TV? What happens when an updated Apple TV is released the next year? Toss out the TV and buy another? Most people going in and buying a new large screen HDTV are planning to keep it a lot longer then the peripherals attached to it. If some new device comes out, no problem, just plug it into your TV. The other thing is that the TV market is very a very mature and saturated market with some big well known brands behind it.
I suppose they could make the content device separate like the current Apple TV which can be attached with an HDMI cable. If they do that what is the point of an Apple branded TV which would likely be built by another company like Samsung, LG or Sharp? Styling and a logo with a higher price? Nonsense.
Apple makes monitors. Apple makes Apple TV2s. Take the back panel off the monitor. Insert Apple TV2. Put back panel on. Apply duct tape. BOOM. A smart tv.
Everything would be streamed. Why would you need to update it beyond it breaking or needing a bigger size.
They'll buy the panel from Samsung, charge double the price of everything else on the market and the sheep will be lined up for days to buy one. It will be a huge hit and Sony and Samsung will go out of business.
