This is almost as bad as the rumor that Daft punk was releasing a new album on 09 09 09..because of their revolution 909.. sadness

Want it

Yeah, I want the freaking tablet, just so I can run multiple iphone apps in tiny windows.

My brother's friend's girlfriend's neighbour works for Apple and has confirmed that not 2, but 4 tablets are to be released.

In a recent rumor started by user RebootD of the Macrumors forum it was stated:

"My sources inform me that their reliable sources heard about this information from a guy they knew who used to work for Apple and claims to have held a new tablet that may or may not be 6-10 in in screen size."

See guys it is easy! :D

I don't see Apple releasing two different sizes with different OS/interface types.

How on earth do you market that?

It's already a difficult product in that people will have to be convinced about what it replaces and/or why it's something everyone needs. Dividing that into two products with different interfaces seems way too unfocused for an Apple product introduction.

This is also why there is NO way this would be announced alongside the new iPodTouch. Apple divided the iPhone launch from the regular iPod launch to let their hype breath for some months. It's what Apple does.

Anyway, I think I'm going to like this tablet as I can see how me and my family would use something like it, but I'm very curious how Apple is going to position it and market it. Will be fun to see. :)

There's no doubt that Apple have made several prototypes of differently-sized tablets to see which work best. Which ones they'll choose to actually release remains to be seen, but I'd be pretty surprised to see them introduce two different sizes at the same time, especially two that have different capabilities.

2 cents

Mac cannot ignore the growing "netbook" market. This "tablet" will also counter Kindle.

I think if there are many college students who purchase this as their first college portable to do their papers, research etc, then Apple will have a young base of Mac OS fans: this will create a lifelong consumers of Mac.

For the poster asking what advantages a 10" tablet will do: no mouse/traditional trackpad needed. If it runs Mac OS, then Speech Dictation software can be used in place of a keyboard. I'm sure there will be a virtual keyboard, which may be adequate for those using the tablet for entertainment and texting. But for students and heavy users hooking up a USB keyboard may be necessary and this could be a deal breaker.

The other thing I've been thinking about is that this is a precursor to a touch-screen laptop. If they could build 10" screen Apple netbook with a 100% keyboard (which should be possible since no space for a trackpad is necessary). This will alleviate fears of the screen cracking because their will be protection from the keyboard.

I think a 10" screen is the minimum size students can effectively do some school work, but it is also the maximum size students will enjoying carrying around. 12"/13" laptops are borderline-convenient, and those with 15"/17" start to find it inconvenient.

I was about to get a 10" notebook for this school term to complement my MacPro. But I'm going to wait and see about this tablet.

I've spewed long enough...

Well it says he/she is a market researcher. (I am one of them too). And we do a lot of work on upcoming devices, netbooks, smartphones etc so I wouldn't dismiss this so lightly.

... and then you make wildly improbably, completely made-up guesses. yup, analyst. :)

Let's throw things against the wall and hope something stick. So far we've heared rumors ranging from 6 to 11 inches tablet. One of them must be right!!

I can't wait until Steve Jobs does a keynote and introduces this mystical tablet, MacRumors servers are going to crumble under the immense traffic. Half the users here will hate the thing and the other half will think it's Jesus product part 2. This product release is going to be iPhone X2.

MORE MORE MOOOORRRE!

...anyway, if Apple made a 12" screen with iPhone resolution density and it worked like a touch screen iPhone with full OSX... utter win. However, if they ordered 10" screens from Asia in bulk, I would think it is obvious the tablet is going to be 10".

and what would you do with that device?

I've had 12" PowerBook, 15" MBP, 13" MBA and i would not endure a 10" widescreen tablet/subnotebook.

Anyhow - apple is not releasing anything for a niche. It will be for the mass market. And it really has to have a keyboard. There is no point in releasing an increased size iphone/touch-brother without a keyboard. that is the only shortcoming for a productivity tool.

In My Opinion Apple shouldnt release a Fully featured OSX device, it will be a stylish overpriced cripple like the Macbook Air.

I hope one of these Tablets is simply a Portal, just A Screen, Wifi, Bluetooth, allow me to sharescreen with my main Computers, Browse The Web (Flash+support WMV), Email, Use as a Keyboard / trackpad for my Macs

I just can't see the usability in this. 6" will not fit in your pocket - so it will not be a phone in it. this will just be a devise inbetween smartphone and laptop.

Yeah, 6" seem useless. Of course never count out Jobs to make what seems useless the new necessity-of-life. That said, I'll believe a 6" when I see it, but the size & price seem DOA with the current economy.

Prediction

At an Apple September Event, iTunes and other less than exciting announcements are made by someone other than Steve.

Event comes to a conclusion ... but then Steve appears on stage and says "oh...and one more thing... the tablet..."

OK. This is more wishful day dreaming than a prediction.

6" = Fit In Back Pocket

What would someone use a 6" for?

Some people can't read that well...

...I for one already use my iPhone as my "couch computer" and ONLY want one bigger such that it still fits in the back pocket of blue jeans, period.

The super big one, blah.

G.

maybe steve will do what he did with appletv?

give u a sneek peak then release early next year

I don't think Apple actually have a clue what to release.

They know they need to release something but *the bullseye* isn't clear right now.

Pocket Portable Practical - iPhone/Touch

<HERE IS THE GAP> Hand held portable Fun & Practical but not pocket portable - not Rucksack powerful

Rucksack/Portable Power - Macbook

House Portable - iMac

What fits in this brief?

It's a nice dual-10 inch screen book sized folding thing. You sit there and you read - two pages opposite each other like all books of all ages - you thumb it over. One screen is touch sensitive - the other is not. It orients all ways, up, down, back to back, mini-laptop style. One standard ipod docking port.

Great for games, great for reading, browsing, control surfaces, menu's etc..but without the raw oomph or connectivity of a macbook.

That's the only useful bit of kit I can see them making.

Everything else has been done.

Edit: They'll call it the cappuccino cos there'll be a hundred of em in every Starbucks across the globe!!

This is ridiculous.

You have your tablet from Apple, it's called the iPhone iPod Touch\

The iPhone and the touch are simply PDAs/smart phones, NOT tablets.

I thought it was the FDA who usually have to approve tablets. ;)

Since when do people eat tablets? oh wait.

While I agree with you on the BS, a larger sized iPod Touch-type of device could be useful; something about the size of a paperback book. It would be as readable as a paperback and honestly much more capable than the Touch for everything it does, including the likelihood of more memory, more speed and easier control.

Based on already-known information, a 6" model is highly unlikely, though. We know Apple purchased 'mass quantities' of 10" displays. We've not heard about any purchase of 6" screens. This doesn't mean that the type can't exist--Apple might have managed better security on the purchase and shipment--but unless this new rumor is discussing a later product, it seems unlikely at this time.

I actully want to see a 4.1-4.3" iPod touch (same size screen as the 1st and second generation PSP). The Larger screen is nice, and its not to small, but not to large.

Narrowminded..

The market is small because no company has succeeded in doing it right. Just as was the case with MP3 players and touchscreen cellphones. Apple did a fine job of mixing those markets up...

Amen to that brother
Someone who doesnt want to read or surf the web on a tiny 3.5 inch screen

3.5" screen is nice, but like I said, up it to a 4.1 or 4.3" and now your talking.

Apple is waiting because they want the iPhone to gain more marketshare before they release another product that overlaps some of it's functionality. Plus, if they wait for the economy to recover more, it will help initial sales of the Tablet to be much higher.

Some of the people are so short sighted here that it boggles the mind. Also explains why so many executives (who are similarly short sighted) at so many competing companies get things wrong time after time.

A 6" iPod would be a perfect size for an e-reader and would take the multimedia experience further as it could be used for better viewing of movies. It would also make web browsing a snap.

There is an increasing marget segment for e-books, especially with STUDENTS and I think people realize that STUDENTS are a market segment that Apple covets above almost all others.

As to a larger iPad, that makes perfect sense. Price it at $699 or $799 and offer it as an alternative to the entry level MB. It can have a few touch based applications at the start for things like retouching photo or video editing. The larger screen will make these tasks far easier to do than on the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Those of you who don't see this making sense are dinosaurs, who are in all likelihood soon to be proven wrong. Right along with the crowd who swore that Apple doesn't sell "cheap stuff" and would never offer a $99 iPhone.
