"One of Apple's prototype devices is able to run all Mac applications, and allows for video and audio editing and graphic animation, Doherty says."

While I don't THINK that will happen, I *HOPE* it will happen.

I would love to see a 10" tablet with OSX apps and PEN INPUT for graphics.

Why would they launch these in Sept? This is something they will save for Jan.
Few reasons:

1) Steve Jobs is itching to be seen by the press again (in shape & confident)
2) Steve Jobs is itching to say "and just one more thing"
3) Holiday Shopping Season
4) The Beatles hasn't really pimped 09/09/09 well enough. Someone should.

I don't know why everyone doubts a tablet now at this MUSIC event. From what we know, Cocktail is the next big Music add-on. Apple is going to want to beat all the record companies to the punch with their version(s).

Yes it IS a music event. But that shouldn't exclude EVERYTHING other than iPods/iTunes.

I bet we'll see a new product on 09/09/09!

These 'rumours' seem to be going backwards. Prototypes? How long ago would they have been made? January when Ihnatko got his first look? Last year?

Apple makes lots of stuff it never releases. This is a non-story.

And with 2 weeks to go, I fear things are going to get a lot worse before Schiller tells his boyfriend Gruber (the night before) what will be released the next day.

...tablets - done right - will replace any other mobile computing hardware in that range. apple knows about iphone's success. they know about people's fascination of multitouch. and - they've seen, that that people are buying it!

cumputing hardware is getting smaller everyday. there are no arguments anymore, for a display in a lid, that you have to open to reveal the keyboard and a touch pad and an area where you have to press....

imagine an iphone-like device replacing yout powerbook or macbook pro. without the phone. (you've got an iphone for that :D) no lid. scratch and fingerprint resistant glass. 10 to 13 inch is enough for a portable (!) computer. when you can zoom stuff. 3.5 inch is enough for the iphone to use safari.

so. apple WILL introduce a tablet. it WILL run MacOSX. 10.6 got smaller, saving disk space (!). they tuned the OS finely. it got faster. optimized for current processor technology.

combine this with the iphone's intuitive input method and its ease of use and a few fingers. powerful OS and powerful price.

does that look like 6 inch? and there are dock connector and headphone jack on that thing.

Oh shhhhhhhhnnnaaaap!
Sony better get ready to get that psp and pspgo dusted. And that Zune HD junk gonna get wiped off he face of the earth. Let the revolution begin!

Bring on the Touch iMac - I'm tired of the stupid mouse.

Any Touch Netbook will be a gateway to getting people used to the idea of laying the beautiful iMac screen on the desk and doing some real Touch computing.

The future will eventually be...

Computing in the future will eventually include voice commands (and eventually brainwave commands--faster and no disturbing in the library--if real physical libraries continue to exist) and touch screens. Typing may be a thing of the past.

So if Apple can make real the next step: voice commands with touch screens with this product, then they are taking the next logical step.

What I would like to see is a "laptop" that can project the visuals onto a white wall. This way all you have a tiny computer/projector that can be 10", 22", or 30" if you want. This might be a long ways off, or someone might come up with a better idea...

Not for a very very long time.

Talking to a computer, (or rather your self) is a sign of time to see a shrink.

if you answer your self, well, it may be to late to see that shrink :D

The more I just read the posts here: 6 inch this, 10 inch that, I'm more confident this "tablet" segment is a crock of bull. And if Apple enters it? Momentum screeches to a halt for Apple.

It's why the Kindle is a specialized market, Not a mass one. Apple can't RE-define a market into a mass one that doesn't exist.

Just my 2 cents

Makes me wonder if Steve is actually dithering now that the rumors have gone wild - should it be released now to appease the masses and prevent stocks from falling in a Christmastime disappointment, or should it be put off until 2010 so people will be even more surprised when it's suddenly revealed?

I know next to nothing about business, of course. But I am personally a bit weary of all this uncertainty (and consider that I've been reading for only a couple of months!), so I'd just welcome the release ASAP with a big sigh of relief.

I can't wait until Steve Jobs does a keynote and introduces this mystical tablet, MacRumors servers are going to crumble under the immense traffic. Half the users here will hate the thing and the other half will think it's Jesus product part 2.

This is so true, I can see half the people as always saying "Apple REALLY dropped the ball on this one" and the other half predicting the takeover of the Galaxy by Apple due to their amazing innovational abilities... :p

Analysts usually know squat about up comming products. Now, if this were to come from Walt Mossberg, then it be a whole different story.

And if it ever does, the yahoos poo-pooing the rumors would still poo-poo.

Come to me, beautiful tablet! :D

...
Talking to a computer, (or rather your self) is a sign of time to see a shrink...
Talking to a computer would be the evolution of decades of research. At least to me and many others here.

Oh and talking to yourself is usually not a sign to see a shrink... but a sign of loneliness. Losing your intellectual capacity is – usually people diagnosed with dementia – which is not something to joke about.

Talking to a computer, (or rather your self) is a sign of time to see a shrink.

Not necessarily.

Start terminal app ( or open an Xterm ).

Type:
emacs

Then press the escape (esc) key followed by the 'x' key.
When get the "M-x" prompt type:

doctor

followed by a return key.

Follow the directions.

Your computer can be your therapist. :) [**]

[ type Control-X Control-C when get tried. ]

if you answer your self, well, it may be to late to see that shrink :D

one sided conversations yeah.... but doesn't have to be one sided.

[** Folks who have major problems should see a professional. But if just want an amateur or it is 3 a.m and there is no one to talk to...... there is already one installed. LOL. ]

P.S. Folks have been saying that talking to computers was just a couple years down the road since the movie '2001' came out in the theaters in 1968. It is a much tougher problem than most make it out to be. Recognizing a relatively small vocabulary of commands? Sure. Having an extended conversation? ... No. It is easy though to get to something that is a crude approximation though.

iPad, or iPads, Welcomed Here

As a longtime Mac user, I have longed for just such a portable device as the
iPad is rumored to be.

I know it is sooo fashionable to decry the persistent stream of 'rumors'
concerning an iPad, but hey... think about how Apple does things.

Apple has genuinely not only 'innovated', but has consistently opened
new product categories, always with quality and usability. Some may
complain about the prices asked, but hey, if you are so enamored of
M$, windoze and PCs, why not just stick with what you think is best?

The iPad, if released, will be another such a market-changing item.

The time is right for such a product or two, from Apple. Wireless and
portability are just now, reaching a cresendo. It is time for Apple to
make big waves, and then ride those waves all the way to higher
stock value and even better quarterly reports than the last, record
breaking ones.

As usual, I scoff at the 'tough-minded, pragmatic, strong voices'
that show up here, issuing cynical drivel about Apple. Such 'commentators'
are transparently revealing their terror upon observing the success
which Apple's business plan have unleashed.

And where better to explore 'rumors', than here at MacRumors?

I will start a new rumor, right here: Upon observing the success of
the new, incredible iPad, our resident M$ shill's hair will burst into
flame. If it hasn't already.

==GP==

Likewise, I'm massively excited about this purported tablet :D

I'd also find it enormously entertaining if no iTablet is announced at all!

Does anyone think these tablets might compete with the Kindle and other devices? It would be way cool to have a thin tablet that did computing and web browsing too along with being able to download e-books....

Only if it's $299 with a two week battery life and free network access.

Someone who doesnt want to read or surf the web on a tiny 3.5 inch screen

That and anything they don't want to do on a tiny screen.
Not that the iPod is tiny.

But I often think if it was a bit bigger then instead of having Mail and Firefox open in the background on my computer for numerous kinds of email. I could have just the one device to take care of all the background tasks. Then just grab that if i head off to meeting and have everything with me.

Now if that device also had a SIP client that hooked to the office phone system via Wifi to add presents awareness.

A range of devices from the current touch, 6-7Inch and a 10 inch.

I do wonder about two new devices. in terms of screen res and size. A 6-7inch screen with the same density as the iPod Touch would be almost as many pixels as a 10inch with the same density as the current laptops.
Or will they grade between?

YES!

I WAS WAITING FOR THIS MY WHOLE LIFE!

Thanx Apple! I hope I can use it as a drawing board too so I wont need to buy a Wacom cyntiq tablet!!

why not?

I can see why a tablet might not fit in certain people's need. But I have a iPhone and I send SMS and I return e-mails on it (short ones). I also have a 15 inch Macbook Pro (last gen), but due to the size and the weight of it I'm not a big fan of carrying it around with it around campus or the various place I need to go and do things. It'd be nice to have a small 10 inch tablet that I can just insert into my bookbag and take it to go with me that would be e-mail,music,internet,some word, and even reading papers. So I say, why not?

Are having multitouch capabilities and pen-input (for drawing precisely) mutually exclusive?

Also, I just don't see how multitouch would suddenly make it marketable. That one confuses me =\

If I were a zillionaire, I buy up all the Apple tablet rumors in the world and drown them in the ocean like a litter of helpless kittens.

:( poor kittens

I really think tablet computers will become far more popular in the coming years as technology improves and we become more mobile in our computing activities. I just think most of us are a little narrow minded as we are stuck in our traditional approaches to computing

Considering Apple's $1 billion server farm - wouldn't this support cloud computing with a fully connected tablet?

I'm not saying something is coming in September, but I think Apple will enter this space and shift how we do things in ways we never considered.

I had a Newton all those years ago, and it was well ahead of it's time. The iPhone/iPod Touch is a natural Darwinian evolution of the Newton. A tablet from Apple will be the same evolution for the laptop

I just can't see the usability in this. 6" will not fit in your pocket - so it will not be a phone in it.
there might not be a voice phone capability but cell data is a possibility

They are not releasing it yet, but if they are going to have apps ready for launch in January then it must be announced to developers ahead of time, so that they can start working on apps!

only an issue if it is using a brand new flavor of OS.

Also... the FCC! For the same reason the iPhone was pre-announced, we will see a pre-announcement of this tablet in September, and it will probably ship in time for the January show.

not really a problem if they are just using the data parts in a bigger form. they could probably breeze through the paperwork

Tablet without all possible wireless connections? No way. Let's call this rumored device a "iPhone Pro" because it absolutely has to have 3G chip in it.

careful. you call it an iphone and ATT will say they have exclusive coverage of any cell data

which is actually a point in favor of not releasing it right now. let it time with the end of the ATT contract.

Can we use this tablet just like a Wacom tablet? Is that possible?

it would be nice. perhaps they would even include the pen in a little side tube.

Mac cannot ignore the growing "netbook" market.

they have done pretty well so far

I think if there are many college students who purchase this as their first college portable to do their papers, research etc, then Apple will have a young base of Mac OS fans: this will create a lifelong consumers of Mac.

a true netbook isn't made for papers and such. and a lot of college students go for a full on laptop. as evidenced by the number of units Apple sells every summer to students

Few reasons:

1) Steve Jobs is itching to be seen by the press again (in shape & confident)

but he is not in shape and won't likely be again considering his problems

which is part of why he's not doing these gigs. Apple has a need to stop folks from continuing the whole Apple = Steve Jobs mind set. seeing him and only him on stage wasn't helping that move

Makes me wonder if Steve is actually dithering now that the rumors have gone wild

apple does what it wants when it wants. which is why no netbook so far, no blu-ray so far
