No way is the ipad 5 releasing in 2014, not with the rear shell leak that surfaced in january 2013.

the only thing stopping me from buying a mini right now is the lack of a retina display. i hope i won't have to wait till 2014

really did anyone believe it?

Did anyone really think there'd be a retina mini this fall?
What's the purpose? The mini's are supposed to be the low end gap filler. You won't see a retina mini for awhile. retina displays just are too expensive IMO.
You could pull it off technologically but the mini is already a lower margin product. Apple won't do it. They want technology to trickle down.

We'll need a massive battery and gpu gain in the regular iPad to see 4K get adopted. So you'll have ot wait for that. But no matter... I think first we'll have to see 4K in a return of Apple Cinema displays and Apple TVs.

We're about to hit a resolution roadblock for a couple of years I think.

If you add a "c" to "analyst", you get "anal cyst". :D

I can predict as an Analyst what Apple will release and help you as a Therapist if it's not what you want. Like my much valued colleague Dr. Tobias Fünke, I'm a Analrapist.

Apple really should improve the speaker design. If they did that and brought the weight of the full size down I think I would hop back on the tablet bandwagon with iOS 7, if not then the new MacBook Air's battery life makes it more compelling as a travel device. Currently my 2011 stays at home because it just isn't worth bringing it anywhere without an outlet.

I'm not sure if I would choose the mini with retina over a lighter full size, the nexus 7 wasn't any better than my iPod Touch at web browsing or reading, and that has turned me off from the half size tablet market.

I think we can now get excited though, these analysts are consistently wrong, so maybe start saving for that retina mini this fall?

Near as I can count, our family is looking to get 3 iPads this fall. If that translates to any significant comparison to other families, iPad growth is still going to be strong. We also anticipate picking up two Macs.

Rocketman

That sounds like a decent forecast. Based on my analysis, I'm forecasting two iPad Minis with retina displays for the Fall quarter in my household, which will raise the iPad-per-human ratio 1.

I concur that strong growth opportunities await Apple. As such, I'm also recommending AAPL stock to investors looking for long-term value.

Analysts just have a dartboard with phrases and words pinned to it, and a sheet with a sentence on it that says

"Apple will release a _____ with _____ and a _______ with _______ on the _____th of ______ 20__"

So your algorithm excludes release dates of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 22nd day of any month. That clearly makes you a more detailed analyst than most.

Oh great, thinner. Maybe then they can put a really sharp edge on it that digs into you when you're reclining with it.

I'll happily keep my iPad mini with the soft, comfortable, rounded corners.

This isn't even a rumor... this is a guy saying words.

Well the only time I'll invest in a NEW ipad is if it has the following features:

1. Widescreen
2. Front mounted good quality speakers for watching netflix/etc.

Wishlist:

3. 4k screen.

All terrible ideas. By making it widescreen you take away screen real-estate for all other applications like games and e-reading.
Get some headphones dude. This thing is never going to give you good sound. Even 60 inch tv's had terrible sound.
4k screen. what content are you going to watch ?

It is curious to me that they are taking longer to switch all their products to "Retina" displays than it took to switch from PowerPC to Intel processors.

Is display technology that hard?

Yes it is that hard. It's because in addition to the very difficult task of producing millions and millions of panels, you have to add a faster chip to the device in addition to extra battery to power the chip and the backlight, which means extra weight and a thicker body on top of the cost of components.

iPad 3 and 4 are great examples. They run hotter and are heavier than the previous gen, and in the case of the iPad 3, it's not faster than the iPad 2 despite the faster GPU because there are so many more pixels.

The challenge with mobile is there's a very limited amount of space and battery in comparison to traditional PCs. You cannot just throw more power to a problem and get it solved within a generation.

Apple will release a Kraken with Meatballs and a Pizza with Pepperoni on the 8th of November 2019

I feel like their iPads are really falling behind and leaving the door open for others with such long times between new products.

I think a new iPad Mini with an A6 processor and WITHOUT a Retina Display is a fantastic idea! Retina Display is nice and all, but on the iPad, it needs a lot more battery power and a way more powerful GPU. The iPad Mini can be a tiny bit sluggish at times, so with an A6 and 1GB RAM, this can be a speed machine with even better battery life (a 12 or 13-hour battery life on an iPad Mini could be a sweet thing).

The Retina effect is worth the price, but I honestly don't miss it on the iPad Mini. With games, photos, and video, the iPad Mini screen is perfectly fine. As with web-browsing, I believe Apple should increase the font in Safari to make sharper and easier to read.

I think Apple will take the same direction as it did with the Macbooks. Want a super thin, portable device? Get the iPad Mini. Want a higher quality display and more powerful specs? Get the iPad Retina.

I don't think we'll see an iPad Mini with Retina Display anytime soon, especially if the iPad 5 gets a new design and becomes thinner, lighter, and overall smaller making it closer to the size of the Mini.

I really have a strong feeling that Apple would like to get a retina display ready as quickly as possible for iOS 7. iOS 7 is clearly designed for retina displays, particularly the typeface. Currently, iPad Mini is the only device which will run iOS 7 that doesn't have a retina display. Whether they can pull it off, who knows, but I'd be a little surprised for them to release a new product that didn't show off iOS 7

The iPad 2 would like to ask what did it do to be forgotten.

It's already thin. I don't care about the size I just want a retina display.

they should be focusing on putting the full size ipad on a diet.

MacRumors and other Apple sites have got to be the only place you see Anal and Thin on the same sentence.

Okay, next thread...

Whatever. It will be here when it's here. I agree it needs the higher resolution update, but this year, or next, it will be here eventually. It's embarrassing the number of 'journalists' and prognosticators that are falling over themselves trying to say when Apple is going to release, or do something...

Based on everything I've witnessed Apple do in the last 5 years, I'd still put my money on a retina iPad Mini in the same chassis with improved internals for the same price arriving this fall with iOS 7.

It made sense with the iPad 2 because the technology for the retina screen wasn't there yet.

It's there already. No way the mini ships this time without a Retina. That would be a big epic fail on Apple's part.
