the only thing stopping me from buying a mini right now is the lack of a retina display. i hope i won't have to wait till 2014

It's not that bad... I use mine more than the full sized one due to the smaller size, and weight. It's perfectly usable to me. The way iPad's retain their resale value, and 'Gosh, thanks' re-gifting potential, you couldn't go wrong buying one now IMO... Especially if you don't have an iPad now.

These analysts are idiots, I can't believe they get paid for this. Any of us could make the same speculations about what Apple will do. Rarely are they right.

Listen up Apple, the sooner you make the retina ipad mini, the sooner you get my money.

A Retina display would turn the iPad mini from a good product into a great product. But I don't think it needs to be thinner...isn't it already thinner than a pencil?

If Apple releases an iPad mini with a retina display, and the same specs as the full size iPad. It will be a day 1 purchase for me.

These "analysts" have less credibility than joe ****face posting here on macrumors. Why are stories like this even posted as news?

My bets are on an upgraded ipad mini that's thicker with a retina display (much like the transition from ipad 2 to ipad 3) better cameras, with no change in battery life but slightly faster processor (A6 or A6x).

So in a couple of months we can expect Shim to say that this fall there will be an iPad mini with retina display  Some things are predictable :D

What iPad mini should focus on is to bring the entry price down.

Not saying they should not give it a retina display, but making it cheaper is a priority.

Still hanging out for my first iPad, hope the Mini has retina but I've see the current on and can live with the 'normal' screen at the right price.

analyze my ASS. just another cretin calling himself analyst...
these impostors know SQUAT !
next...

It is curious to me that they are taking longer to switch all their products to "Retina" displays than it took to switch from PowerPC to Intel processors.

Is display technology that hard? They already have the iPad, iPod, iPhone and 15" MacBook Pro, now we still need the iPad Mini, Thunderbolt Display, iMac and MacBook Air to go Retina.

1) Well you need to fit 4X the pixels into the same size screen
2) Manufacturing
3) CPU/GPU to drive the screen
4) You need to shove all of those power/heat hungry components into a device that's super thin and light, which is also an engineering challenge

I like how everyone blasts the source when they don't like the news, and take it as the gospel when they do.

Moan all you want, we all laughed off reports of two iPads in one year, suggested by analysts. And what happened in 2012? Exactly.

I've been patiently waiting for iPad Mini 2 and hoping it is retina. It's the perfect size for reading books on which is exactly what I need.

For some time, I have felt that the Ipad ( full size and mini) does not need to get any thinner. In fact, cases with a little bulk actually make the iPad easier to hold. It is very difficult to hold a thin and heavy object.

Wieght is another issue. The iPad could lose some wieght, and as technology progresses, it will.

Exactly... can some of us on this forum get together and pick random dates out of a hat and become analysts too?

I propose a complete ban on "analyst" rumours and instead rely on sensible, level-headed Mac fans to successfully predict the return of the PowerBook G5...

Break the norm and allow voice calling over the cellular network on 3G devices please - This appeals to me far more than an improved screen (a blanket retina replacement should have already occurred on all their devices imo)

Why in the world would the Mini need to be any thinner than it is ???

It's wafer thin right now

Certainly there's a limit to how thin a mobile device can and should be, but I'm not sure if the Mini has reached it. For instance the iPod Touch is 15% thinner than the iPad Mini and even that could probably be thinner still. Also the important part here is a thinner device usually comes with a reduction in weight. A lighter iPad Mini will always be preferred especially since it's a product that emphasizes its portability.

iPhone 4 was supposed to be too thin for many. Now it feels like a brick next to iPhone 5, not to mention a range of thinner Android phones. The iPad 1 didn't feel that thick but now it feels like a huge slab. If Apple makes a new iPad Mini that's noticeably thinner, after a while the older iPad Mini will feel like a brick, just like all the predecessors did.

Yeah and there was also a prediction for new iPads in March. That didn't exactly work out.
