and the Apple Store app failed! Also Apple Pay!

So many people having problems with preordering via Apple Store app and using Apple Pay! I was totally expecting it. This is what happens when you tell millions of people that "the Apple Store app is the best and quickest way to preorder" and that "you can guarantee getting iPhone X on Nov 3rd".

The website went live for me at 8:08am and the app was still down till 8:25am. The website actually went live earlier for many people and the app was still down. That was expected because the website had to deal with less load this time.

Yes, the Apple Store app is still the most convenient and easiest way to shop for Apple products, but NOT when you have millions of people hammering it at the same time. Thank god I had my Mac and PC on the Apple Store website, and didn't put all my eggs into one basket!

Also, people had trouble paying with Apple Pay, again it was expected.

Tip for next year's pre-order - don't use the Apple Store app and don't use Apple Pay! Let millions of people hammer it and believe they can guarantee an iPhone delivery on launch day by using the app, just open the website, place your order and get a quicker delivery!

I honestly had terrible issues with the Apple App Store app. I opened it up and waited. Finally I get through, and just like that my bag is noted to be empty. I was baffled because I had saved the iPhone X into favorites just like everyone else. Where did it go? Whatever. I restarted the process. Still waiting after selecting the phone for it to process through. Finally it processes after a while and blue checkout button shows up. I click it. Nothing happens. I click it again nothing happens gives me error. Suddenly on my iPhone an email pops up saying order number etc. I was baffled again because I'm staring at the checkout screen on my phone... whatever order is finally in with Dec 5 delivery. Not happy about it.

My ordeal with ATT is a different story and I posted that thread here too...

App never worked for me, and ordering from the website went without a hiccup. The confirmation email is time stamped 2:07 central time and the 256 silver Verizon model is scheduled for a November 3rd delivery.
 
The Apple app was down and so was the Apple Store. I ended up ordering through Verizon and got a launch day delivery for a Silver 256GB; order placed at 2:20AM CST.
 
Took me around 15 seconds with the app. I practiced it, and with Apple Pay, it was very quick.

I had the Mac Apple Store site open at the same time. I did this to easily refresh the site because it was late (about 4 minutes). They both became active at the same time (within a second).

BTW, I felt like an idiot (command R)ing constantly, and was getting a little pissed. :D

Got screwed by the Apple Store app too, didn't activate until 12:10am for me. I'm on the upgrade plan and was pre-approved and everything too. Took 3 seconds to checkout but I was already hit with a 11/17 delivery. I heard upgrade users are required to purchase through the Apple Store app so I guess I would've been screwed regardless. Totally lame.

Exactly. I had no problems with the app myself but I am using ATT Next so I wasn’t paying for it when I preordered.
 
Apple Store app didn’t go live for me until 3:05am. Still was able to secure launch day delivery; 256GB Space Grey.

I’m curious to how the Apple Store app lets people in on pre orders or when the app comes back online after being down for a release. Is there a switch, by geographic region, random luck of the draw, etc

It was actually pretty crazy. Have three monitors so one was on for att, Best Buy and Apple Store using chrome with auto refresh. Att came up at 12:00am, Apple Store at 12:04 and bestbuy at 12:08 while App Store didn't load until later then these.
 
My Apple Store app opened about 3-4 minutes after midnight and I was checked out for launch day pickup using Apple Pay about a minute later. Actually one of the easiest preorders Ive done.
 
I also used the Apple Store app on my iPhone and got in at 3:02 and completed the order with no problem. I'd agree with jhearty99, probably one of the easiest preorders I've ever done with Apple or the carriers. FWIW, I did have the Apple Store app on my iPad Pro which never seemed to connect and I had my iMac on standby if I needed to go that route, both were obviously backup options. I seem to recall something about Apple only allowing a number of people in waves - but not sure - so that may be a potential culprit for some that were having issues.
 
Store came up for my GF and she was able to check out while mines was still saying it was down. Once i got in, apple pay kept giving my a billing address error. Finally typed everything in manually and it worked. Went from a in-store pickup on the 3rd to a ship date of Nov. 17th
 
I think the reason why others were experiencing a delay with the Apple Store app is because they did not “close and re-open” the app when 3:01am hit.

See, if the app was already open, it took a while for it to refresh. Closing then re-opening it refreshed it faster. Having a fast/newer idevice helps too.

I did this with my iPad Pro and was able to secure a phone for Nov. 3. It went very smoothly and I’m quite pleased.

On two different phones I must have closed and opened the app 300 times. Still took 15 minutes.

Both app and website were down for me then when came online it showed 2-3 weeks....so I ordered it from BB and got a Nov 3rd delivery!
