I've got a 16GB iPhone and iPad Air. On both devices I had to delete a bunch of apps to be able to install iOS 8.

So next time no more 16GB for me.

I agree. They should've absolutely killed off 16gb. I saw this yesterday on Twitter & it's pretty sad

Clearly explained I'm coming from a galaxy s3 so wasn't sure how it worked, hopefully 16gb will suffice as I don't store any music on the phone, many thanks.

i'm getting a 16gb myself. the main thing that takes up space on my 16gb iphone 5 are pictures. i have a gb or two of music and not a ton of apps. my phone does fill up after a few months but then i move the pics to the computer (which i need and want to do anyway) and delete them from the phone and i get 4 or 5gb back. i don't play games on the phone really. mainly just use FB, Twitter, maps, surf the web, etc. I am considering buying a year of this iTunes match service. I don't expect i'll have any issues. But we also have another upgrade coming in February and there's a chance i'll give my wife the new 16gb iphone 6 (she currently has an 8gb iphone 4) and getting either a 6+ or a higher capacity 6. but i know for me 16gb is fine, and it's essentially free once we turn in the old iphone 4.

No games for me either, just a few apps but I do take quite a lot of photos so like yourself I'll have to back them up and clear out regularly all the ones taken that aren't really needed.

Not having had an iPhone since the 4 I'm not sure how best to back things up as I'm using a 2009 imac with osx 10.5.8 so no icloud, show I upgrade to snow leopard?

good question. not sure. only Apple i have is an iphone. no macs or osx.

If you go on iTunes and see what is using up your space, pretty much guaranteed, "Other" is pretty frickin' large. If they had a tool or clarified what was in the other, we could clear that stuff. People say its old backups or music covers, but you can't get rid of any of that individually. My iPod touch 8gb (4th Gen) has about 3gb of "Other" stuff.

Every time I come on here and say apple has to kill the 16gb I have people arguing. The last guy said "why would they kill their best selling device" hahaha.

I just now have a guy arguing that for him 32GB isn't enough anyway. Another dumb argument.

So here it is

http://m.nydailynews.com/news/natio...ownload-speed-storage-space-article-1.1944049

iOS 8 requires nearly 5GB free space in your phone.

How can you people argue with me? I am telling you that apple has to kill the 16 GB. But they killed the 32GB one instead. It is ridiculous. It makes no sense.

I know the argument now will be to just plug it into iTunes. You're wrong. The answer is to kill the 16GB. It no longer makes sense. It is a rip off.

If you are going to look at this always from the consumer perspective, it will never make sense to you. And it is always your choice as a consumer to move to a different brand phone if not happy with what Apple offers.

As a consumer of Apple and and investor in Apple, this was a brilliant move this year to eliminate the 32GB model and offer the 64GB model for the $100 upgrade. Had Apple done what you wanted and eliminated the 16GB model, many would have been happy with the base 32GB model and Apple would lose a TON of $$ from those who had previously paid the $100 up-charge. That would be a big negative to the average selling price and margins of the iPhone overall. A dumb business move if Apple had done that.

Now this year all those that had been paying $100 for the 16 to 32 upgrade in the past are very happy getting more memory for the same $$. There are many who don't do a lot with their phones and 16GB is fine for them. Then there are those who need to move up from 16 to 32 based on their use and while they are not happy it did not happen for free, they at least get a lot more this year for spending an extra $100 (instead of extra 16GB for $100, they now get extra 48GB for $100).

My best advice for you... invest in Apple stock / options. I don't mind paying a premium for Apple products because I make a lot investing in Apple.

i think theyre going to keep the 16 gb just so more people will buy the 64gb. If they increased the baseline to 32, nobody is buying 64 gb

Why is everyone railing on Apple for charging $700+ for 16GB? They are charging so much because they can. Every other competitor who includes more storage would love to charge $700 for 16GB. But the market forces them to ship with more storage to survive.'

Apple is a business, not a "fair-play" parent. Apple will rightfully do whatever it takes to grab the most amount of money from its customers while giving back the least possible in return.

Here's the deal guys, the masses don't care. They don't fill 16gb, and until they do, they won't be clamoring for more memory. So even if it only costs $1 per phone, why bother? Most consumers won't know the difference, and it will only hurt sales of the 64. From a business standpoint, what they're doing makes total sense.

Nope 16gb is way more than enough for me and the wife, I have 2 apps on my iPhone ... Find my phone and Waze and that's it... My wife has 1, find my phone

On both our iPad mini-r's neither of us have anything other than find my phone. They are used as communication tools for email, calls, texts and mild document creation. Neither of us use social media at all ... So for us, we have no need for anything greater than 16gb it's just ludicrous to consider anything greater.

They are tools to make our lives easier not for us to be drawn into and spend hours gawking at the screens of them. (And before anyone says its its because we are old et al, we are 30 and 32 respectively and professional people)

This is precisely what I've been trying to explain to family and friends who were infuriated.

I'll bet there will be a base 32gb model most likely starting with the 6S/+S

32GB should be the standard, but this year you can't really complain because 64GB is now the price of 32 and 128 is the price of 64. Nobody truly expected Apple to drop the 16GB model this year anyway, so I don't understand why people are complaining.

Sheesh. Looks like I'm not switching over to iOS anytime soon. I'm on 16GB right now and don't really feel like dealing with my data right now. Once it's out for awhile and the bugs settle down, I'll download it and hopefully by then I'll get around to consolidating the files on my phone to make room for iOS8.

Or just make it 32/64/128

That would be detrimental to Apple. With 32GB as base version, a lot more people would not require to venture out to pay for 64GB and 128GB options. With 16GB base, everyone but the most frugal users will have to pay-up for the 64GB or 128GB options.

What do you back up your phone to then?

Itunes on my PC and icloud. will be starting from new when i get the new phone though. i don't have anything on there that i absolutely need to keep. i just moved all my pics over to my laptop so i'm ready to go.

In 2014, when only the OS Update needs almost 6GB free, the capacity options should be 64/128/256. My wife was struggling yesterday to install iOS8 on a 64GB Iphone 5S.

All I can say is wow!

You have infuriated friends and family over what, a phone? SMH. Update to IOS 8 using iTunes, no issue.

Well, she shouldn't struggle at 64GB to install 6GB of an OS unless she has a ton of media. In that case, I suppose it makes some sense.

I'm never really sure if you are truly bent out of shape that the 16GB iPhone is still available today. If memory serves, I was not one who argued with you and it appeared many agreed with you. Not that your so-called argument wasn't something that hasn't been said numerous times by others. But let's be real, "you people" that you refer to only includes a small handful of responders who seemed to disagree with you in your last "kill the 16GB thread." Your accusatory and attention-grabbing thread title is fairly inaccurate. "You" [we] are not all arguing with you and I certainly don't see why you're so incredibly bent about things.

Notwithstanding, killing the 32GB simply did not make a whole lot of sense to me. I stand by everything I've ever written about the 16GB being something that cannot sustain today's apps, photos, and OS updates. It seemed like the 32GB would even struggle but I think the 64GB will be just fine.

If it makes you feel better or helps you not be so bent about it, there are many that agree with you and every other person who has mentioned that the 16GB is too small and without the ability to use add-on storage, any iPhone user with a phone that has limited capacity will feel the struggle even if they don't load a ton of media on their device.

You know there could be a one terabyte flash in these phones and a certain percentage of users would not have enough space. Apple will never be able to produce a phone With enough memory for some people.

iTunes match plus spotify plus iCloud photos plus unlimited data. I use about 8GB of the 16 on the phone, and that includes the OS.

Some of y'all need to understand the difference between the smallest size you need and the smallest size others need.

Because 11gb is still plenty for tons of people. Many use web browsing, email, texting and only a handful of apps. They don't need more than 16. They won't until iOS doubles its current size. For the rest of us, we just got an extra 32g for the same price we would have paid anyway, so who cares?

Bullsheet. Everybody uses camera on the phone all the time and believe it or not, 8mp pictures can fill up those 16-5gb pretty damn fast. 16gb should be banned from selling.

No they don't. I hardly ever use the camera. A lot of people take an occasional picture here and there and leave it at that. Not everybody is instagramming lunch.

It's not 5.7Gb installed. It requires 5.7Gb TO install. It downloads the image, uncompresses, installs the image, and then deletes the image after installation. If you installed from a Mac or PC to your phone it wouldn't need that much space.

To icloud I would imagine... I find today with all the cloud storage options, you don't need as much storage. icloud for backup and to hold the whole camera roll, itunes match keeps all my music in the cloud as well. Stream everything else. My email is IMAP so no storage there either.
