1. Temporary Verizon free phone to prevent people from switching to iPhone. That promotion "sold" a lot of free phones, but also cost Verizon dearly. Verizon lost money in the same quarter.
2. people waiting for iPhone 4 in Q2

Apple, with their total disregard for the customer has done this. They give us a walled garden,no ability to transfer/sell apps, defective equipment that loses signal when held to the point of affecting the call, and moral approval of apps and their content.

I think the people is waking up here, and they don't like the dystopian future that the Apple iOS ecosystem is heralding.

right, it could be that... OR it could be that you can get android on all 4 major carriers and iphone only on AT&T.

I believe it's more geared towards business people, and professionals. Who do you work with?

lawyers. and every single one I know has a blackberry, and iphone, or both.

No, I take that back. I know one with an old Palm Treo and one with a Droid. But zero winmo phones.

Good. Apple always needs the competition to keep it on its' toes.

That said, why the hell do people still use BlackBerries? A physical keyboard? The only reason I can ever get out of people is "business users" or "businesses like them". Why? What do they offer that iOS or Android or any other OS couldn't offer? I mean the BlackBerry hardware itself is pretty mediocre. They still use the same crappy full keyboard/tiny screen setup that they've had for ages.

kinda skewed finding if the iP4 data isn't in there

Yup. All the Android "studies" use data from Q2, when people are least likely to buy an iPhone, because they are waiting for the new iPhone.

WinMo has 13%? How is that possible? I've never seen a single person with a WinMo phone. Do they even sell WinMo phones any more?

Those people are too ashamed to use their phone.

I find it interesting to see Android and Windows Mobile line are about opposite, making it appear that Android is mostly taking sales from WM, not from iOS devices.

The really, really interesting graphs will be when the iPhone goes to Verizon (if ever???). It seems Android is starting to do very, very well due to it being the dominant OS on Verizon. Most people I know who have bought Android phones on Verizon had a desire to own an iPhone at one point but gave up when they saw a worthy competitor

Android?

Haha Android will always win until the iphone comes to Verizon. It is obvious that verizon is enough to keep people from flocking to the iphone. Walled garden indeed. ;)

How does this apply to the success of Android outside of the US?

This is the way I look at it too. I would not expect iPhone to be number one when there are is only one phone running that OS. It is not a problem, and the comparison is justified--but more or less irrelevant to Apple or anyone else who doesn't care about those statistics.

Could not agree more.

Yeah but how much profit has AAPL made on the iPhone in 2010 compared to all the other makers combined? It's all about profit baby!:D

Yeah, you ****ing idiot. User experience is all about how much the phone maker is profiting.

This is to be expected :)

I was never a fan of iPhones due to the draconian app policies. I'm using the Nexus one and its the best phone i've used thus far :)

Having said that, I do own an iPad which i mainly use to read books and .... my new iMac's coming in a day or two :)

Avis the car rental company had a very famous ad campaign...

Avis. Were #2. We try harder.

Someone has got to be number one.

Yes, lets go ahead and compare over a dozen Android handsets to one iPhone handset. Sure that makes perfect sense.

It's platform vs. platform really. The apps will go to the platform with the bigger install base. People should clearly be seeing the parallel here between the Mac and Windows desktop battle. iPhone is going to lose. Vertical integration ALWAYS loses. Steve Jobs hasn't changed in 30 years, and he's actually had many many failings. I use an iPhone 4, but it's pretty obvious to me that it's going to "lose".

The simple fact is this: Android is available on multiple carriers and is the "featured product" on the #1 carrier in America (Verizon). As long as Apple is unavailable on the #1 carrier, they'll continue to be outpaced.

Quoting because this is the simple truth of it all.

Multiple phones on multiple carriers VS one phone on one carrier. If Andriod did not outpace the iPhone it would be embarrassing. This is expected and not really shocking.

Could not agree more.

Furthermore, I'd like to see the android erosion of Windows Mobile, Symbian, and other OS based phones to complete the picture.

I'd really like to see webOS taking some of that market share from the dinosaurs (winmo, symbian, bb) rather than it all going to android because I think webOS is the most interesting OS out there. Unfortunately, it was tied to sub-par hardware, and now HP, being HP, will undoubtably find a way to screw it up.

The iPhone user base has actually been increasing. But (for a time) Android increased even more. I don’t think people are “waking up” to the exaggerated fictions you describe :)

Have you personally been harmed by these dire “problems” you describe, or collected the actual facts, or just read bloggers vaguely ranting? :) And I assume you feel Google and Verizon do only good, and never exercises any kind of control? ;) What apps does the App Store lack that you are so upset over? Because Android lacks a LOT of my favorite apps and games. If I want choice, I’d better stick with iOS!

Vertical integration ALWAYS loses.

depends on what you mean by "lose." Not for the customers and not for the shareholders. Maybe in marketshare, but companies don't really care about marketshare - they care about profits, which may or may not correlate strongly with marketshare.

True, however, this time, we don't have Sully to kick him out.

Haha. Yeah, that's what this is about. It's about customers choosing an open platform and not say...

About the fact that there are no shortage of Android devices on every carrier. This data is more like, "Well, no kidding." I'll be more curious about how things go when iPhones are available from more than one carrier in the US.

If the average consumer cared at ALL about open platforms, Windows would never have gotten a foothold on the market and Apple would be dead right now. You give the average consumer WAY too much credit.

The big question is what % really love and/or want to be in Apple's "walled garden" for the next 10 years?

WinMo has 13%? How is that possible? I've never seen a single person with a WinMo phone. Do they even sell WinMo phones any more?

WinMo users keep their phones hidden in iPhone cases. Those that do not keep their phones in their pocket. They are easy to spot. When you see a person walk out of the room to answer their phone without pulling it out of their pocket, you know they are a WinMo user.

Don't forget, Steve Ballmer purchases 1.6 Million WinMo phones each year, just to bump up the numbers. You should be in his house when someone makes them all ring at the same time for a prank.

As an Android user I welcome this because who will benefit the most? Application developers. I don't care if the phone I like sells 10 or 100,000,000 phones, if it's the phone I like then I'm glad to have it. I don't need to read market share numbers to quench my insecurity about my purchasing decision. However people who develop do care about the numbers and this is good news for Android developers.
