I went to Verizon store and put a Android in hand and was not impressed at all, felt like a Windows based phone, and the fact there is not a iTunes type store to purchase apps I would be back in the stone age as I was with the other OS's I had them all and the iPhone is the most stable on.

Open Source wins here.

If now only the producers would get their act together with updating their Android Versions on their smartphones. I have to say I like Mac OS, but with the tight control over the app-store Apple does not do itself a favor. I think (and fear maybe?) that Apple will suffer once more from its closed policy, same as with the personal computer. They do it best, but they do it the Apple way, which means they value control over the user experience higher then the freedom of choice what to run on their products. And with the ipod/phone/pad OS X being in focus somehow Mac OS is a bit neglected. There are still bugs in Snow Leopard, more then I would want to see.

Maybe Apple would be better off without the strong signature style of Steve Jobs, he should maybe slowly play a less important role, consult on strategy and technology, but I think a lot of this "closed Apple experience" is due to his personal ideology.

You all seem to be forgetting that Apple's phone sales have dried up until the next gen iPhone is released thanks to a guy who purchased some stolen property. Android should enjoy the bogus victory while it can because it won't last long. In the end, sales numbers on the new iPhone should be pretty high thanks to a lot of would be purchasers holding off.

The NPD Group published results from the first quarter of 2010 which reveals that Android-based smartphones outsold the iPhone for the first time in the U.S. According to their data, Android-based phones accounted for 28% of smartphone sales while the iPhone accounted for 21%. Meanwhile, RIM remains the market leader at 36%.

NPD attributes the growth to strong promotion as well as broader carrier coverage for Android devices. The iPhone is currently sold only by AT&T. While AT&T does make up 32% of the smartphone market, they are the only provider that offers the iPhone at this time. Verizon (30%), T-Mobile (17%) and Sprint (15%) make up the bulk of the rest of the market. The numbers may also reflect the late lifecycle of the iPhone 3GS compared to the newer android devices. Apple is also widely expected to revise the iPhone in the next month.

Apple has also been rumored to be expanding iPhone distribution beyond AT&T, though the exact timeframe remains up for debate.

Great news for consumers and a reality check for our Steve :)

Anybody that cannot appreciate that point requires a reality check themselves !!

My friend just got an "Incredible" phone, and after playing around with it, I was incredulous. The user interface and is not even close to the experience on the iPhone. Apple has nothing to worry about. All of those Android phones will have price and differentiation wars amongst themselves (after all, the handset makers want to make a profit), confusing consumers and resulting in a plethora of inferior products, while Apple will cultivate its group of loyal customers with phones in which attention is paid to every detail.

OMG, an online survey determines that there are more interest in free products than premium products.

Really, an online survey would show that there is more interest in Linux OS then in Apple or Microsofts?

wait, i think you are making stuff up..

maybe it would depend on the product and not just whether it was free or not.

You guys must not have been running the super cool Glazed Donut skin that makes all the Android lameness go away. ;)

And extra points to dbwie for coming up with the next Droid model name: the Droid Incredulous. :D

I expect iPhone sales to sag until the new model comes out. Your advice in the Mac Rumors Buyers Guide is "Don't Buy!" It makes sense. I want the newest version and am willing to wait. Wait for the end of year numbers before writing off the iPhone.

There are a few arguments I find interesting/misleading, including this one. Sure, people aren't buying the Iphone while they wait for the new one. But people stopped buying the Droid waiting for the Incredible and they also stopped buying the Hero awaiting the Evo.

Another interesting argument is the pointing out that several Android phones are going free or cheap. It is true that clearly gives an advantage to Android in sales. I think the sales strategy is different, Android/Google wants as many online as possible, so the hardware is just the stepping stone to make that happen. It may be a trick to show more "sales" than the Iphone, but Apple does the a similar type thing by counting all the Ipads sitting on the shelves at Best Buy as sales. No one here seems to mind that trick ;) Besides, if Apple wanted to discount the phone there is no doubt they would sell a TON more nothing is stopping them :)

Oh, while we are on the topic of discounts, aren't refurbs discounted? Won't the leftover 3gs be discounted?

On the subject of multi carrier/ multi device, it seems like a decent business strategy. Allow anyone on any network use your product and offer them multiple handsets with options they may like (like a hard keyboard). Again Apple could do these things, there is nothing stopping them (aside from the fact they keep renewing the exclusivity deal). If they did they would almost assuredly be number two again.

Is it really a big deal? Not really, both companies are making money hand over fist...

I'd rather get the upfront subsidy. If I want to bail out early I'll pay the ETF and make up for it by selling the phone.

Don't all U.S. carriers require some sort of contract - or increased pricing in lieu of - when it comes to data plans on smartphones? I don't know as I've never had an unlocked device, but I don't think you can just roam from carrier to carrier without any sort of time commitment or financial penalty or increased monthly premium. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You know, I never even though of that. How much is the penalty for an early cancellation?

I don't know if you NEED a contract if you pay full price for a phone. Honestly, I kinda want to go back to a small "dumb" phone after 2 years with my iPhone. Not that an android or Win7 phone would be any better necessarily. I just want a simpler life. :p

Silly Rabbit....

This whole thread is absurd.

Maybe like 5% of consumers even know what a "tech blog" is - let alone read one.

Maybe like 20% of consumers who do read "tech blogs" read the comments. And maybe 1% of those who read comments, post comments.

So for all you people posting anecdotal evidence as though it is "fact" ("I know 3 people with iPhones so everyone owns iPhones") - are still an uber-minority of the real world.

Look, here is how it really is. Most consumers don't know what an OS is or that a phone even has one. Most consumers just buy phones that they like. Many buy them on impulse, without any research or forethought. Many consumers will buy phones because of the color of the plastic, or what kind of bling is available as accessories. Many consumers only ever take whatever is the best "free" phone offered with a cell phone plan.

Most consumers have no clue what is open source, a walled garden, a linux kernel. Most consumers don't read MacRumors, and most consumers don't care about bits and bytes and RAMs and ROMs. And almost all consumers don't give a crap about what we post on MacRumors.

So all of this bickering about which OS/phone is better is retarded. Buy what you like, and get over yourself.

Come on..
That is like saying Ford sells more cars than Prius.

Android is an OS sold by dozens of manufactures, while iPhone with it's OS is sold by Apple only - there's only the 3G and 3GS.

The only real "competitor" is RIM, as this is only made by Blackberry.

This is not really news.. next we will hear Apple is a monopoly!

:p

Apple is stupid to maintain such an exclusivity agreement with AT&T for so long... its channel coverage, distribution that will kill them if they don't broaden their appeal to carriers.

That, and maybe they should consider updating the iphone hardware twice a year instead of once, one big update and a mid-cycle hardware upgrade (little more memory or a little bit faster, better camera).

Im not surprised, given the poor wrap that Steve Jobs is getting from the wider community about his stance on Adobe. I think that the next gen iPhone will be less wanted as a consumer item than previous. Dont get me wrong, I think droid sales wont be great for a while, but at the end of the day, Apple need to do some self promotion to remind people they aren't such a bunch of elitist ****s.

How's the exclusive carrier strategy working out for you Apple? Never was able to participate in the 3G part of Apple's strategy and now my wife and I are perfectly happy with HTC Eris and Incredible. I always wondered if Apple was covering up a larger issue with dropped calls with the exclusive agreement.

CUPERTINO, California—January 25, 2010—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 first quarter ended December 26, 2009. The Company posted revenue of $15.68 billion and a net quarterly profit of $3.38 billion, or $3.67 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $11.88 billion and net quarterly profit of $2.26 billion, or $2.50 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 40.9 percent, up from 37.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 58 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple sold 3.36 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 8.7 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 100 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 21 million iPods during the quarter, representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

Seems to be working out alright for them.

There are a few arguments I find interesting/misleading, including this one. Sure, people aren't buying the Iphone while they wait for the new one. But people stopped buying the Droid waiting for the Incredible and they also stopped buying the Hero awaiting the Evo.

People overrate the amount of knowledge the average person has on any of these. Most people would not know that the iPhone is coming up on a new model. Although it is much more likely people looking to buy an iPhone would find that out than someone aiming to buy a new Android handset for whatever carrier. As talked about with so many players fighting to be the dominant android handset, they are going to be way too busy fighting and destroying each other.

I am sure the average consumer/customer is not waiting off on buying a Droid because the Incredible is coming out, just like the average person is not holding off on the iPhone. Although again, while it may be 5% for Android phones, it is like 15% for iPhone, so while it is bigger for the iPhone they are both still relatively small.

It may be a trick to show more "sales" than the Iphone, but Apple does the a similar type thing by counting all the Ipads sitting on the shelves at Best Buy as sales.

Apple does not place their iPads on consignment with Best Buy. They sell them to Best Buy and then Best Buy sells them to the consumer. Obviously you would count something you sold, as something you sold.

Interesting number is still to come

These numbers are for Q1. My guess is that Q2 will look similar to Q1 in that HTC Incredible will probably drive lot of sales for Android platform on Verizon. In fact HTC Incredible is pretty much sold out. The new iPhone will come out at the tail end of the Q2 and I doubt that will matter much to Q2. Q3 is where it starts to get interesting. The new iPhone will be popular for your average Apple fanboys upgrading from 3G or maybe even 3GS. However will it have enough features to lure smartphone buyers away from HTC Incredible or even HTC EVO? There will be two things to look for. Is the new iPhone sales more about existing iPhone users upgrading from older model or are they brand new customers? Will the new iPhone be available on Verizon and if not will there be a mass exodus from iPhone to Android platform? The Q3 numbers will be a telling sign whether the iPhone will maintain it's dominance or perhaps it has peaked and Android will slowly but surely take over the smartphone market.

Add Verizon and T-mobile. Instantly available to 47% greater market.
T-Mobile at least. Since it wouldn't require a radio change.

Apple is looking at margin instead of total profit, making a large margin on a smaller pie, instead of a smaller margin on a huge pie. It is what they want so that is what they and we get.
I am getting an android cause I will never go to AT&T.

Check out the XDA Developers forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/

Plenty of people porting newer roms to various Android devices. If the bootloaders can be unlocked, there is no such thing as no update.

The G1 already has a few Android 2.1 roms and I posted a vid of it earlier. Once the source code is out there and the people like Cyanogen do their magic, newer user genreated software and features are possible.

True but everyone isn't a geek and the average consumer who has an early device probarly will not want to do this. And Android fanboys always point out how the 2G iphone will not be supported in 4.0. If you look at the amount of time that the G1 was Officially Supported The support for the 2G iphone was longer and i think people forget that it was supported officialy longer

And the average consumer is not a the mercy of HTC,Samsung etc.

I don't get why everyone on this forum is blind to the fact that not every customer is a Geek and most want something that isn't going to be alot of hassle to upgrade.

This forum is very biased because people think everyone is dazzled by specs, homebrew etc. When most consumers who don't frequent message boards online don't want those things.

Agreed. I think the 1-model-per-year strategy Apple is currently sticking with will be suicidal when we'll be seeing new Android models every other day. I think they need at least a 6-month refresh.

I'm saying why not benefit from hardware subsidization from the carrier if you have to pay them their $30/month fee anyway?

Me on iPhone: $199 + $30/month
You on Nexus One: $529 + $30/month

The whole "unlocked" thing doesn't offer me any real advantage if I still have to pay equivalent monthly fees (which I do).

Actually, if I stuck with my old 2g iphone plan I would be paying: $529 + $20/month

How can some people be so blind to their own biases?
