I missed

I missed the war. There's plenty of room for both iPhone and all the hand-me--down, me too products.

They can all live together. Plus what would the Android Dev folks do without the iPhone to be inspired by? And you can't beat buy one get one free. I mean that's produced wonders for the fine nutritionally rich 'food' that Mickey D's makes.

And the best part, it just shoves Microsoft and RIM that much further off the cliff.

And yeah Open is the best. Look at the success of the largest most robust platform in the world. The one that outsells everything else - Linux.

Well maybe not...

Good. Android is the superior OS and I'm glad to see it winning. A huge victory for open source.

In other news: toyota outsells bmw

Remember at the end of the day what the company cares most about? PROFIT!
Apple makes billions with higher price and fewer phones.
Google makes billions with super low price and countless number of phones.

Both win!:apple:

Open Source wins here.

If now only the producers would get their act together with updating their Android Versions on their smartphones. I have to say I like Mac OS, but with the tight control over the app-store Apple does not do itself a favor. I think (and fear maybe?) that Apple will suffer once more from its closed policy, same as with the personal computer. They do it best, but they do it the Apple way, which means they value control over the user experience higher then the freedom of choice what to run on their products. And with the ipod/phone/pad OS X being in focus somehow Mac OS is a bit neglected. There are still bugs in Snow Leopard, more then I would want to see.

Maybe Apple would be better off without the strong signature style of Steve Jobs, he should maybe slowly play a less important role, consult on strategy and technology, but I think a lot of this "closed Apple experience" is due to his personal ideology.

so you are suggesting that Apple should fire Steve because of the apple app store and the popularity of iphone OS. Hmm. Okay...if you say so.

What can we say? I guess there are a lot more sadomasochists out there than we thought.

"Does your phone run like luke warm dog droppings? Does it crash at the slightest provocation? Does it run a hangar full of apps all approved with nearly non-existent quality control? Droid Does."

It can't ALL be because of AT&T... can it??

If this can be reeled in, Android will be a real contender. I think Android is a threat to Blackberry more than anyone else right now.

Let's wait and see what the figures look like in June-July when the new iPhone is expected to be released. :)

These stats are by quarter, so next we can look forward to April-June, then July-September. So obviously the July-September time period would be reflective of the next iPhone (maybe even the end of June?).

some folks want a walled garden experience.

in general though, I think most people want a choice of platforms and networks.

As for Apple, I think the 'closed experience' has be working well for them (so far, at least); and there still seems to be lots of demand for their products.

I don't believe thats the culprit here. The iPhone 3GS is practically at the end of the product lifecycle and given the recent leakage of the next generation iPhone, that just boosts the effect seen here in these charts. It logically doesn't make sense for anyone to purchase a 3GS with the new iPhone just around the corner. It defies common sense...When the next generation iPhone is released, these numbers are not going to be the same as we see them here.

its only because andriod is available to a larger section of the market. Combine that with the fact that everybody is waiting to buy the next generation iphone.

When they roll out the new iphone this will be old news. Isn't the iphone supposed to be on verizon pretty soon?

well thats an automatic win for apple next month.

Without the ability to sync with iTunes seriously what's the point? Don't get me wrong the Droid is a good phone and a strong competitor to Apple. But Apple's biggest fault is AT&T. Once they release the iPhone on other carriers would anyone really care about the Droid?

Here's for the "YAY! OPEN SOURCE FTW!!" People out there: http://www.learn-cocos2d.com/2010/04/open-source-feature/ . It's a very interesting read.

I think the only reason that Android is making any headway, well there's two actually, is that 1) there are certainly more carriers of Android devices than iPhone and 2) Sales of iPhone typically slow in the summer months as apple intentionally dwindles supply and people anticipate the release of a new device.

Apple does it best because they do it "the Apple way" and because of Steve Jobs. It's because they have tight control of things that they make the great products that they do.

The closed system approach is best for me, an non-hacker who wants no problems. Hope Apple sticks with that.

Apple has stayed with AT&T too long. Time to actually sell to the rest of the country.

Time for pre-pay and limited data use plans. The current expensive two-year contract keeps many, many people from being customers.

Oh, and Apple needs a little PR campaign to friendly-up their image. Lighten up! Start a company beer league. I want to see film of Jobs playing right field with a beer in one hand and a hot dog in the other. And, if they play the Google team, hire Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire as "special consultants". You can have a reasonably warm image and and still play to win all at the same time.

There's only one thing keeping Android to be a dangerous competitor to the iPhone: the user experience. There's nothing close to the iPhone on this topic.

Otherwise. Go Android ! Go !

Verizon network kicks ass. If the iPhone were available on Verizon, It would be a killer combo.

I totally agree. AT&T is weak in my area, and Verizon is strong everywhere here, even out in the rural areas. I'm using an old Moto clamshell phone and waiting for something to happen that I can act upon.

I can understand the allure of the Android phone, especially by people used to having to futz with their Microsoft computers, they just don't know how good life could be when using something that "just works."

Some people are reading way too into this. Android has more phones, including some brand new ones that sold like crazy. They also sell to a lot more customers. So they sell more for the FIRST time? Big deal. It makes sense that they do. It's good competition, but I wouldn't call it a threat.

After next month, let's see what the difference is.

Without the ability to sync with iTunes seriously what's the point?

DoubleTwist
iSyncr
TuneSync

TuneSync™ allows you to sync your iTunes playlist and songs with your Android™ device. It copies the unprotected music to your SD card and creates playlists that match your iTunes playlists. TuneSync™ does this all over your wifi connection. There is no need to connect your Android™ device to your PC or Apple Mac.

There are plenty of solutions to sync Android handsets with iTunes.

Great news for the industry. This will push Apple to start making moves.

As for Android.

The HTC Incredible is AMAZING!

I wish they would make tying products in Belgium legal because now you can buy an iphone here without a subscription to a telecom provider making it very expensive. €575 ($745) for the 3GS 16GB and €675 ($875) for the 32GB version.

I sometimes think people foget the iPhone has like 4 models.

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPod Touch

the original iphone of course isn't giving them sales, but the iPhone 3G most certainly is.
