I wonder if free Android phones count toward these numbers? By my house Verizon is giving away free Moto Droids with contract, no buy one get one free, just sign up.

Yes they do, which is one more reason why these numbers are bogus.

Also for this to be accurate one model would have to beat the iPhone.

Android is not making any headway. People who can not switch to the iPhone are buying them.

Bye bye iPhone...

Analysts predicted that Android would surpass iPhone, although it was supposed to be in 2-3 years not this soon :D
I guess the era of iPhone is coming to an end, but Apple wanted this... when you are that greedy and you impose all this control over a hardware, software and the process of getting software running on that hardware platform.

Android is getting better and better every single day, its user experience might not be as good as iPhone, but it is open and everyone can modify it and improve it; and proof of this is HTC and other manufacturers :)

I am glad that I bought the iPhone last September, it is a good phone, but thanks to Steve, I know I won't ever be getting another one. Android will be the next phone in one year or so :)

Going by this article if 21% of all smartphone sales are the iPhone and AT&T sells 32% of all smartphones in the US then 66% of all smartphones sold by AT&T are iPhones. What I want to know is why the heck isn't Apple releasing an iPhone on all other providers?

Even if the special CDMA (quad band so they can still work internationally) cost an additional $50 to $75 per unit to produce for Sprint and Verizon Apple would still make a killing with all the additional sales. I have used both Android and iPhone (don't own a smartphone myself). The iPhone was immediately usable while the Android is not so intuitive (Blackberries are horrendous with that scroll wheel).

I sometimes think people foget the iPhone has like 4 models.

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPod Touch

the original iphone of course isn't giving them sales, but the iPhone 3G most certainly is.

That would be 3. The iPod Touch is not an iPhone.

DoubleTwist
iSyncr
TuneSync

There are plenty of solutions to sync Android handsets with iTunes.

Not only that, i believe DoubleTwist has become the official solution for T-Mobile android phones meaning i think its bundled with the phone (i guess you are prompted to download when you connect the phone?)

That's pretty serious....i've played with it and while it lacks "polish" it certainly recreates the feel of iTunes enough where most people would have no issue using it.

The iPod touch is not a phone either- it is not a cellular device and is not part of any carrier - doesn't really count.

Really? Quite a bold statement! For such a statement you must have some evidence to back it up with?!

Yes, it seems kinda ridiculous considering the fact that I switched from an iPhone to Android, I also have no plans on getting rid of AT&T either, they work great here, so you can't blame it on carrier either. I got a Nexus One because it's the better phone.

Screw open source...

"In order to compete with the iPhone, Verizon Wireless has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer..."

Even a Linux user can figure out what that means. "To generate buzz and excitement, we have to give this slop away."

This situation reminds me of Inigo Montoya in the Princess Bride smiling during the sword fight with Westley whilst fighting with his left hand: "I know something you do not know".

Apple is on the verge of an iPhone upgrade. Apple is tied to a single carrier. Apple has not yet developed the "mini" iPhone. If I am Apple, I am smiling as I have been fighting with my left hand. When Apple switches the sword to their right hand, will Android have such a move, as Westley did in the Princess Bride?

Mobile is an ultra competitive space, but there is room for many successful products. Android will undoubtedly be one of them.

I suspect the big loser will be Microsoft. Good luck selling an OS when there is a dominant free one.

I think the market will be split between free OS users (Android Phones) and vertically integrated OS/HW companies (Apple/RIM/HPalm?).

Microsoft can only succeed by releasing it's own WinPhone7/Zunephone or whatever and even then they will measure success in some small percentage of the market. IMO I expect them to be largely irrelevant in this market.

because you have to write a contract and now that Android is selling so well Verizon can dictate some terms and not just roll over. Android is designed to be good for the carriers, not the user

Show of hands how many people are waiting to June to buy the new iPhone? I know I am....

The closed system approach is best for me, an non-hacker who wants no problems. Hope Apple sticks with that.

Apple has stayed with AT&T too long. Time to actually sell to the rest of the country.

Time for pre-pay and limited data use plans. The current expansive two-year contract keeps many, many people from being customers.

Yup, yup, and yup, to the above.

While Apple gets a lot of stones thrown its way over the closed app system, I think it will pay off when the hackers start in exploiting the Android OS and phone users start having their data and security blowing up on them. Microsoft is also leaning towards doing it the "Apple way" with their new phone, and I'd bet it is for the same security reason.

Apple holds the master "off" switch on all store bought apps, and can stop any app from sucking a battery dry or doing anything it was not meant to do. Android handset manufacturers have no such ability to protect their customers except to write security patches from now to forever, and we've seen how well that has worked out for Microsoft OS.

I think its great so many people are getting phones for free.

I think its a shame that it somehow is supposed to reflect on Apple that AT&T doesn't feel compelled to offer buy one get one free deals. I mean, can you imagine what would happen to iPhone sales if you got a free iPhone with every purchase?

RIM has kept its lead with this strategy, while Google is now surpassing iPhone with this strategy. I seriously doubt Apple will EVER have this strategy for any NEW devices, although... hm... very possible the 3G could become a freebie, the 3Gs for $99 and the iPhone HD for $199. I like that. Sounds like it should be the way to go. People would resell the 3G 8GB for BIG BUCKS! :D

I once heard a quote that made me laugh.

"Statistics are like a bikini. What they show can be interesting but what they do not show can be essential."

These numbers are a bit misleading. Most people that I have talked to (my self included) are waiting for the new model to launch vs. picking up a 3gs now. We'll see what happens when Apple releases the g4.

I hope android does well. I don’t want one for my self but if they do well enough to force apple to move on to multiple carriers and free up some of the AT&T network I'm all for it! Even if that doesn’t happen more people going to android will dilute the flood of new customers in June.

I hate that I cannot use my Iphone at any large events because the network is understandably overburdened. So I hate to say it but "go android!" <gag>

There is no money in free.

The more that companies like Verizon squeeze their vendors (Motorola, etc), the less profitable they are and either they will leave the market or go out of business.

And the fact that Verizon and others have to give the newer products away and Apple is able to sell a year old product is really kind of funny.

As for Android. The HTC Incredible is AMAZING!
I walk into one of those in Verizon store. It is impressive phone and UI is "butter smooth". It does not surprise me why Apple went after HTC, their phones UI stands out from the crowd and competitive with iPhone one. Motorola Droid UI next to it was all choppy and jerky.

Eh True...but i'm including that in an app developers mind as well as mobile metrics data.

But it's not in the same market, so you can't include it. How does mobile metrics data (not sure what that means eve) apply to the iPod if it's not really a connected mobile device?

Do you think that it is AT&T that is greedy here and not Apple? Is it possible that Apple charges much more for the phone than HTC thus making it impossible for AT&T to offer free phones? Judging by Aplpe and HTC profits this seems like a more likely scenario ;)

You nailed it. People that don't use iPhones on a regular basis don't really get it. They put a lot of weight on features, but that's not what makes the iPhone so revolutionary. Now that the UI has become a part of my life, I'd rather use a Gen 1 iPhone on the edge than a Droid Incredible on 3G. It's all about the UI.

There's only one thing keeping Android to be a dangerous competitor to the iPhone: the user experience. There's nothing close to the iPhone on this topic.

Otherwise. Go Android ! Go !
