I don't believe thats the culprit here. The iPhone 3GS is practically at the end of the product lifecycle and given the recent leakage of the next generation iPhone, that just boosts the effect seen here in these charts. It logically doesn't make sense for anyone to purchase a 3GS with the new iPhone just around the corner. It defies common sense...When the next generation iPhone is released, these numbers are not going to be the same as we see them here.

Finally, someone with common sense. Lol at people thinking this is a win for open source. It's only obvious people are just waiting to buy the next generation iPhone.

expected.

I am sure no apple exec is loosing any sleep over this, rather someone just won a bet as to when this would happen.

I think I heard someone at apple say something like... 'we want to make the best of every thing, not the most of any thing'

Finally, all those folks getting excellent smart phones for free with android, they ought to go and kiss apple, for without iphone, they would be getting a free nokia instead. Ironic, isn't it? :)

Good. Android is the superior OS and I'm glad to see it winning. A huge victory for open source.

while i think android is a great platform and could definitely be worth getting someday, my only problem with it is all the android morons with inferiority complexes. surely if it is that good people will go and buy it without you having to add "Good. Android is the superior OS and I'm glad to see it winning. A huge victory for open source" on every forum you find. seriously don't you get bored being so repetitive because the rest of us do.

For many years, even decades now people have been saying "this is the year Linux will go mainstream." Well now maybe finally this is thr year Linux will go mainstream.

If Linux is on the #1 selling smart phone then it is pretty much mainstream already. So 2010 is the year.

The Droid is an OK phone. If you gave me a choice, though, I'd rather pay for a new iPhone on AT&T than get a Droid for free.

And honestly, I hope Apple keeps doing exactly what they're doing -- just because I know it annoys the everliving crap out of "Open Soruce" people. I prefer a closed platform that does exactly what I need -- mostly because my Phone is the one thing that absolutely needs to work every time I pull it out of my pocket. Closed platform pretty much ensures that.

iPhone is still the best IMO

I understand that Android has superior hardware on their phones at this point, especially with the introduction of the Droid Incredible. I also understand that with an "open source" there is more customization available to your phone and more crazy kooky apps that wouldn't be available on the iPhone.

That, however, doesn't change the fact that the iPhone OS and hardware just seem much smoother to me in pretty much all aspects. It is simple, and not that I am a "simple" person, but i've come to prefer the iPhone OS over really any other phone i've come across up to this point. I'm sure with the introduction of the next iPhone in June, they'll be able to close the gap that Android has been making hardware wise.

It's all a matter of preference, and the tech junkies that want customization up the ying yang at the sake of a smooth experience, will always choose Android. I'll stick with a smooth, streamlined experience on a phone that does everything I need it to do, without any headaches.

Yes, it seems kinda ridiculous considering the fact that I switched from an iPhone to Android, I also have no plans on getting rid of AT&T either, they work great here, so you can't blame it on carrier either. I got a Nexus One because it's the better phone.

...and during the cold war a handful of Americans moved to the USSR because they felt it was a better political model. There's always a few people that really don't know better.

android phones are released year round, the iphone is once a year. so there will be some hardware lag. the A4 CPU looks very nice so i'm expecting nice things for the new iphone coming up.

in the app store there are tons of apps over 100MB. this is impossible on Android and most games don't break 10MB. android is nice if you want a nice smartphone on a carrier other than AT&T

?

What is this, a high school popularity contest? The 1st quarter 2010 sales? How old is the current iphone? How many people already have one? The market is already saturated, and these numbers don't mean anything as to which OS is better/more popular etc... As long as everyone is making money to bring profit to their company and shareholders while making devices people are happy with spending their money on, then its all good! Who cares who outsells who in which quarter...

Mobile is an ultra competitive space, but there is room for many successful products. Android will undoubtedly be one of them.

I suspect the big loser will be Microsoft. Good luck selling an OS when there is a dominant free one.

I think the market will be split between free OS users (Android Phones) and vertically integrated OS/HW companies (Apple/RIM/HPalm?).

Microsoft can only succeed by releasing it's own WinPhone7/Zunephone or whatever and even then they will measure success in some small percentage of the market. IMO I expect them to be largely irrelevant in this market.

I'll disagree here. If a product sells, manufacturers will want to make it. Bottom line.

I think with what we've seen of WinMo 7 it'll do fine.

Hey everyone,

I've been waiting years for the monthly cost of the iPhone to come down before I finally get a cellphone. What are the chances of a drop in the monthly cost of the iPhone at this time? I am mostly motivated by price, so I will buy an Android phone if it is cheaper to own. I'm starting to think that I may not be the consumer that Apple wants.

Well, that's just it.

The number one selling smart phone is the iPhone.

As we're seeing now, the various companies that use Android on their handsets are actually competing against one another as well as the iPhone. Several weeks after Verizon launched the Droid by Motorola, they started pushing the Droid ERIS by HTC.

And the funny thing is that George Lucas makes more money from Verizon than Google on the Droid.

Huh? Android = Linux? On which alternate universe is that true?

This may be true, but then this tells me you don't know much about the platform. Most apps download (from the app itself) extra data after its on the phone since then it has access to the memory card since apps can only launch on internal memory (as of now).

They have full 3D games on android phone as well. 10MB limit is very much what smart dev's do for their apps.

DoubleTwist
iSyncr
TuneSync

There are plenty of solutions to sync Android handsets with iTunes.

Not really, cause it only syncs unprotected music. So anything you buy from iTunes you have to burn to disc then rip it again which causes a loss in bass levels.

However this is a good find for those that aren't super picky on that whole subject. :p (Let's not get into an argument on lossless files please :D)

Competition is good

Competition is good. it makes everyone better.

That said, saying this is a win for open source is ridiculous.

You have multiple newer handsets on multiple carriers vs 1 older handset on a single carrier.

Lets see what there numbers look like in a couple of months when the new iphone is out. Even better lets see what this looks like in a year or 2 when the iphone will hopefully finally be on multiple carries. Will be a much more even comparison then. (Think how many people want an iphone for Verizon alone).

Is this much of a surprise? Apple essentially only have one device to sell, whereas the number of Android handsets is growing almost exponentially. Android will be the go-to OS of choice for a large portion of smartphone manufacturers, making it almost the Windows of the mobile world.

I think this has more to do with either people waiting for the new iPhone or waiting for their contract to expire.

NEWSFLASH: giving away phones for free increases volume and market share.

For the usual suspects who squirm against this argument, Engadget has the same opinion:

The growth for Android was attributed largely to strong carrier support -- like Verizon's buy-one-get-one free offer which, incidentally, also helped Verizon maintain a 30 percent smartphone market share, which is just slightly behind AT&T at 32 percent, and ahead of T-Mobile and Sprint at 17 and 15 percent, respectively.

LOL! Yet another person snowed by the "Google gives me Android for free because they love me" chestnut.

Enjoy having all your personal data become part of the Google sledgehammer.

The HTC Incredible is AMAZING!

No, that would be the HTC Droid AMAZING (coming sometime soon to a carrier near you), followed by the Motorola Droid TOTALLY AWESOME and the Samsung Droid WAY TOO FREAKING INTENSE.

Its funny (i agree with much of what you say above) but some of my non tech friends want an iphone if it comes to verizon...yet they are fine with their blackberry's now. I mentioned to two of them the HTC Incredible and just the lack of knowing what it was astounded me.

Like one said "oh its just like the iPhone"....i'm like yeah, but it runs andorid. She was like...oh is this thew new Droid. I'm like, well yeah, but not really....

Then shes like...well, i don't know if i want to give up BBM.

Apple did some voodoo magic with their marketing hahah.

Apple just seriously needs to go multi carrier. I'm not sure what they get exactly being so tied into AT&T, but honestly I only see it benefiting AT&T.

At least from my perspective (Verizon), their continued exclusivity is just preventing me from buying one, thus causing Apple to lose another sale and I'm sure as hell not jumping ship to AT&T

Fixed that for ya.

Oh, not that it was wrong, but I've taken to calling my Droid the "spyPhone" after realizing that... well, that's what it is.

I actually wanted to post something similar. I didn't however, want to come off as the conspiracy theorist ;-)

But to push the point, Google wants more user data they can do whatever they want with (sell, push adverts, whatever). They develop an OS thats "open source" in terms of carriers being able to take it and use it as they please. The goal is the more carriers and manufacturers that embrace Android the more phones there will be. Having more phones means getting it into the hands of more users. That then satisfies Googles goal of more user data.

Now I'm not saying Android is a bad thing. It's has some great concepts and is a great alternative OS. It's helping to significantly raise the bar for what "smart phones" used to be. But I wish that people falling all over themselves sticking up for Google would realize that they are not developing and "giving away" Android just because they are a great bunch of guys. They are in it for money as well. They just go about it in a much different (more elusive?) way then other companies such as Apple.

And in terms of everyone using the term "Open Source" and that this is a win for "Open Source" (and even the term "Open" in general).... I've said this before elsewhere but it still holds true,

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
