It was inevitable that Android was going to have market share.

It wasn't ever about market share for Apple. If that was the case, they would see the iphone on every carrier and just literally DESTROY the android platform (just because the public will still think its better, even we all don't think it is).

The end game for Apple is $$$$ and as long as they are getting a steady flow of whatever that symbol is....then they don't care too much. Eventually, Android will eat away on their initial sales and software purchases and thats why Apple is like "hey hey hey....can you stop pleeeaaasseee?"

What I'm curious about is whether the app store will change in favor for the marketplace. Will developers leave ship to move to google? What are the statistical sales numbers on paid apps vs free apps on marketplace?

That's really the reason developers are staying, seems like more people are willing to pay for apps on apps store than android. Because if this wasn't true, i don't see why a developer would stay on Iphone OS Sorely (especially the high end developers that make the more polished apps).

This is an assumption, but I would think that the majority of the coming-up iPhone sales will be to people who already own an iPhone. Geez, it would have been out for 4 years by then.

Actually 3 years, but who's counting?

You would think if you're going to get an iPhone, you'd already have one.

Totally. The iPhone market is completely tapped out. Just like "Everything that can be invented has been invented." - Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. patent office, 1899

So a collection of 5+ devices (which are mostly offered 2 for 1) now outsell one single phone?

Who would've thought that?

tbh there are many different kind of phones with androird on compared to the one iphone, maybe why it seems that the android outsells the iphone.

tbh i had an iphone and then got android def pref the android for the open source, app store not the same though but itll do.

It's almost in our (iPhone fans) favor that it isn't the best seller. It will only lead to Apple producing better phones. You know, the good aspect of competition.

We need it to lead those dullards to make the phone available on quality networks and stop tying it to that piece of crap ATT 3G mess.

Well, look at it like this. Everyone already HAS the stupid iphone why would we be buying one every quarter? Everyone I know has it, seen everywhere. The people that buy the assdroid are still in contract with current providers. They can easily upgrade and stay with the same network. But iPhone IS the phone of choice.

5 Reasons why someone doesn't have the iphone.

1.) They hate Apple and don't want to "give in".
2.) They have a contract with another provider.
3.) They have been just to lazy to switch.
4.) They have never seen or used one.
5.) Mom and Dad wont let them.

PERIOD.

6.) They don't mind Apple they just prefer another phone. (Macbook, iPod, and Droid owner here).

For many years, even decades now people have been saying "this is the year Linux will go mainstream." Well now maybe finally this is thr year Linux will go mainstream.

If Linux is on the #1 selling smart phone then it is pretty much mainstream already. So 2010 is the year.

In 1999-200? Linux was on the #1 selling DVR in the world, the TiVo.

That must have been the year Linux went mainstream.

By the way, Linux is not on the #1 selling smart phone. It is the foundation for the, well actually it is not really clear what it is.

It is like maybe the foundation for the 3 or 4th most popular mobile OS? Perhaps even the 1st as well, but that is not android, but Android does not have the top selling smart phone or anywhere near close to it, and android is an OS for smart phones, but symbian phones, for example sell more, so this study is kind of weird.

So I guess really, this is the year of Linux, because a Mobile OS based on Linux now is on more numbers of various smartphones than Apple sells.

That is quite the Sash to print out there and wear around.

the more I think about this news the less it makes sense. They are not comparing apples to apples here. (lol not intentional wth).

Ok! For all us REAL thinkers out there it is no surprise that an already dominating cell phone industry which has adopted a FREE OS, and touts itself as an android phone(bull****) beats the iphone in sells.
I could make an OS called STANK A** that was a rip-off of iphone's OS and give it out for free and before you know it STANK A** phones would out sell iphone! LOL!
What the article doesn't say, and rightfully so, is that the many cell phone vendors out there don't have a single model that is outselling the current iphone. The way this Android game is being played is that a company like LG will deliver a certain Android based phone with a certain Android build(1.xx,2.x etc) but will in a few months drop another Android phone with an updated Android build. However, in order to entice the consumer to get a new phone, even in the middle of a contract, they wont allow the new build to be available on the previous phone. So the greedy cell phone user will feel compelled to pre order the new shi* and sell their old one(just a few months old and most likely on ebay) so they can be on the so-called cutting edge.
I was in a tech blog two weeks ago and some dude said he got the Droid, then the N1 and now he has recently bought the Incredible. Three phones in less than a year and on a current contract!!!!! OMFG!!

And I hate that open sourced talk when some people talk about Android. If it was so open sourced then the users would never really have to wait for a new phone to get a new Android OS. They would go to Google and download the latest stuff for their phone but it is apparent that such a move would hurt new sales for Android cell phone makers. Duh!!!!!!!!
Scr** Android!!!!

this is exactly the reason why the iphone will go to vzw and other carriers by fall

you have to understand that Apple wants to keep growing and continue to take market share from rimm and goog instead of loosing it, they could careless what att wants. Apple is out for themselves and they know by going to vzw it will increase there revenue, steal a **** load of market share from rimm and goog as well as passing msft to have the 2nd biggest market cap just behind exxon mobil.

Apple knows that att's service sucks and they know they will sell a **** load more phones by going to vzw. To this day even with the iphone on att vzw still has the most subscribers out of all carriers i believe its 92.1 million something around there, you add the iphone to vzw you be surprised how many people sign up

See my above comment.

I've had everyone iPhone since day one of the original launch and I recently had the opportunity to own an HTC Hero from Sprint for a couple weeks and I loved the device. Most apps that I used on my iPhone were already available on Android and if not there was a very similar counterpart. The OS works great and for those who said it loves to crash I have not had mine crash as of yet. At this point I am on the fence between staying with the iPhone or switching to Android.

Froyo will tackle that as they're decoupling applications and components to allow for updates over the market.

I see a lot of "will do" when it comes to Android. "Will run Flash." "Will have a better user experience." "Will allow you to update your G.x device to the latest OS." "Will have more apps and better quality apps."

That's all fine and dandy, but seems a bit disingenuous to compare a "someday" device to a "today" device. But that's what we often get in the Android vs. iPhone debate.

now let's compare something that matters.. Profits. Which platform are people actually willing to spend money on?

The NPD Group published results from the first quarter of 2010 which reveals that Android-based smartphones outsold the iPhone for the first time in the U.S. According to their data, Android-based phones accounted for 28% of smartphone sales while the iPhone accounted for 21%. Meanwhile, RIM remains the market leader at 36%.

NPD attributes the growth to strong promotion as well as broader carrier coverage for Android devices. The iPhone is currently sold only by AT&T. While AT&T does make up 32% of the smartphone market, they are the only provider that offers the iPhone at this time. Verizon (30%), T-Mobile (17%) and Sprint (15%) make up the bulk of the rest of the market. The numbers may also reflect the late lifecycle of the iPhone 3GS compared to the newer android devices. Apple is also widely expected to revise the iPhone in the next month.

Apple has also been rumored to be expanding iPhone distribution beyond AT&T, though the exact timeframe remains up for debate.

The one question I have, and I'm sure many people have (and could have been asked earlier in this thread): If the iPhone had been open to other carriers (Verizon), would there be a market for the Android platform and would it stand a chance against a multi-carrier iPhone.

Perhaps in some parallel universe people are running around with iPhones that only work with Verizon here in the US and AT&T has died years ago...

Hard to believe

Open Source wins here.

If now only the producers would get their act together with updating their Android Versions on their smartphones. I have to say I like Mac OS, but with the tight control over the app-store Apple does not do itself a favor. I think (and fear maybe?) that Apple will suffer once more from its closed policy, same as with the personal computer. They do it best, but they do it the Apple way, which means they value control over the user experience higher then the freedom of choice what to run on their products. And with the ipod/phone/pad OS X being in focus somehow Mac OS is a bit neglected. There are still bugs in Snow Leopard, more then I would want to see.

Maybe Apple would be better off without the strong signature style of Steve Jobs, he should maybe slowly play a less important role, consult on strategy and technology, but I think a lot of this "closed Apple experience" is due to his personal ideology.

I find your point a bit hard to believe amoung the unwashed masses. Yes techky types would want to go for the open source software, and maybe other IT personnel, but the unwashed masses are looking at features and ease of use. They have never heard of open source and open standards and they are the biggest majority purchasing proiducts.

While you may disagree, I think it is the number of outlets selling the Android phone that is making a difference in combination that those in the know are waiting to buy the new iPhone in Jun/July timeframe. Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint together can move a lot of units without the new owners having a clue of what "Open" means.

I don't know. Good question. Although I have an iPhone, and am seriously considering buying a Verizon Droid to get better signal than what I have with AT&T. The AT&T signal has gotten so much worse over the past few months that I am ready to investigate it. Maybe the resale value of my iPhone is enough to offset the cancellation charge. I love the iPhone but really am getting tired of the crappy service. I mean, having apps and lots of stuff to do ON your phone is great. Don't get me wrong, BUT I got the darned thing because you can make and receive calls on it.

That day will never come. That's the side effect of open source.
