Why Apple allows Android to gain momentum by sticking with AT&T exclusivity is a complete mystery to me. Does Apple want Android to win?

I know a lot of people who have been desperately wanting an iPhone since its release but have been unable to get one because they're not on AT&T. Eventually they buckle and get an Android device. And they tell me "Well, it's not an iPhone, but it's all I can get..."

Android's only superiority to the vast majority of buyers is that it's on all carriers.

Wake up, Apple. Get the iPhone on all carriers. Put this crass pretender (Android) in its place.

in the app store there are tons of apps over 100MB. this is impossible on Android and most games don't break 10MB. android is nice if you want a nice smartphone on a carrier other than AT&T

Android games have full access to the SD Card so games like ExZeus and Raging Thunder II are 57MB and 22MB a piece. Also, Quake III running on the Droid proves that larger games are possible! ;)

AND, the free phone comes with the requirement of another smart phone line charges. Ha ha, bend over so I can install your new free phone.

Let's suppose the iPhone was free on AT&T. You really think they wouldn't charge your new line a data fee?

I mean... really...?

Ha ha indeed.

Verizon & AT&T practically have the same rates across the board on all their cell phone plans.

Analysts predicted that Android would surpass iPhone, although it was supposed to be in 2-3 years not this soon :D

There was a report a couple months ago predicting that Android would surpass iPhone marketshare by 2012. It wasn't really a surprise because there are many Android handsets on all four major networks.

What's surprising is that Android passes iPhone marketshare this soon in 2010 Q1. Android is still a relative new platform compared to iPhone. Android is only on the market for a mere 1.5 year and it already surpassed the very successful iPhone.

Are you serious!?

Indeed I am.

I suppose you have never used a Android phone, because if you did, you would realize out ridiculous your statement was.

Actually, I have used an Android phone, and my statement stands.

Not only that but the OS as a whole allows much much more customization and OS extras that Iphone currently or in 4.0 wont have PERIOD.

Newsflash: most users don't care about customization. It's true!

Now to step off my cheer section for android... i actually do find some applications on iphone are more polished than their android counterpart, that includes facebook for example.

Oh, OK, so Android apps are way better than their iPhone equivalents. Except when they're not.

Android can do everything plus more than the Iphone OS, the same cannot be said vice versa, at least not in the foreseeable future.

Here's what the geeknorati never understands: consumers want something that works better, not does more.

It's a fact. Get the iPhone on all carriers and let's see how things play out, hmmm?

The following is true:

-Do you know how ridiculous some of you sound? Picking a phone is like picking a pizza chain, some people like one and some people like the other. If there were a thread that said "Papa John's outsold Dominos" would you people still argue over exactly why you buy one or the other. Does it matter?

-Who cares about numbers? Unless you are an accountant or stockholder big deal. If my favorite phone was the worst selling in all of history I'd still be a happy person if the phone worked good for me. Do you feel you have to justify your purchase by going with what the masses do?

-With the iPhone being on one carrier is this any surprise? Anyone who wanted one for the most part has one. They had a chance to finish their contracts on their non-AT&T carrier and move on easily by now. iPhone's aren't that expensive really. Most of the 4th gen sales will come from people upgrading.

-Four of my friends picked up Droid Incredibles, they are wonderful phones and I will be purchasing one today. iPhone is a great phone, but it's not the only great phone anymore.

Is this much of a surprise? Apple essentially only have one device to sell, whereas the number of Android handsets is growing almost exponentially. Android will be the go-to OS of choice for a large portion of smartphone manufacturers, making it almost the Windows of the mobile world.

It would be if the phone makers could agree on a hardware specs and screen specs.

Because the majority of people here, no matter at how ridiculous they sound, only care about Apple. Most of them would be happier if Apple were the only computer company in business in a world of no competition or innovation. *shrug*

Android can do everything plus more than the Iphone OS, the same cannot be said vice versa, at least not in the foreseeable future.

But in order to be actually be superior you have to do things well, not just do them. A window is not by default superior to a wall just because it does more. The iPhone OS experience is superior the Android OS IMO.

Open Source wins here.

Has nothing to do with open source or closed source - its about the iPhone finally getting real handset competition (Droid/Droid Incredible) on a real carrier (Verizon).

-> Want to see iPhone really take it on the chin?
If the Sprint EVO 'remotely meets expectations' you will.

-> Want to see iPhone REALLY REALLY take it on the chin?
Watch them not launch on Verizon this summer.

iPhone users should not feel threatened though - you don't have tethering, choice of carriers, 4G (service), and multitasking today because of lack of competition. This will put Apple back on track.

It's amazing that people continue to come to MacRumors and gripe about the pro-Apple perspective.

Strawman fails.

some folks want a walled garden experience.

in general though, I think most people want a choice of platforms and networks.

No, I think people want a product that does what they want it to do--no matter how vague that sounds.

If that "whatever they want it to do" is from a choice of platforms and networks, they'll choose that. If it's from a walled garden, they'll take that.

It's what consumers DO with the product that's important, not necessarily what the product is.

wait til the new iPhone is released. I am not surprised that sales slowed a little with the anticipation of the new iPhone with OS 4 coming out next month.

Déjà vu ?

Do people get a sense of deja vu here? Does not it sound familiar? Apple comes out with excellent product, sticks with a closed platform and premium price schemes, enjoys financial success for a while until the product gets commoditized. Apple refuses to compete on price, loses market share first and then loses profits as well. Is not this what happened to Apple in computer domain? Is it possible that Apple is simply not that good at competing when it comes to commoditized products?

Strawman fails.

So this is a pro-Apple only site then? Can you show me in the rules where this so-called "anti-Apple" sentiment is not allowed? Thanks.

No one said it was (and in fact MacRumors has become a favorite hangout for Apple haters everywhere).

But coming here and griping about pro-Apple sentiment is, well, ridiculous.

Oh, and your new strawman ("Can you show me in the rules where this so-called "anti-Apple" sentiment is not allowed?") fails too.

Just because I think the iPhone is not the best phone ever, it does not make me an Apple hater. I just haven't drunk the kool aid like many here have.

I come here to read about Apple related news and to see just how biased some people are. Not sure my comment was anti-Apple or a gripe but to each his own.

Thanks for the personal attacks though. Love it.

To iPhone or not to iPhone

A few days ago I heard a loud "thud" against the side of my house. I went out to see what happened and laying on the ground was a smashed Android phone.
My neighbor was standing there and said he was so pissed off with this piece of crap phone he just threw it... Said he didn't mean to hit the house. :)

I showed him my iPhone and what it could do... His whole family now has iPhones and loves them.

All of you Android open source boys can say what you want... I have looked at many many phones and none of them compare to the iPhone... Not even close.

I think Apple will eventually bring on other carriers. When they do watch the sales!!

Yeah.... completely believable story.

On another note, hopefully this is the kick in the pants Apple needs to get the iPhone onto other carriers.
